@moogoo I'm over the moon with it, very premium feel to device and it feels very fast indeed. I'm in the middle of moving house so won't have a lot of time to put it through its paces unfortunately but I'll see if I can snap that photo you asked for.

Concerning the lens distortion issue, my assumption is that it might be just a small bad batch. Honestly, it's not uncommon, as I had that problem with my Z1. Had to send it back to clove to exchange for a new one. In my opinion, it's definitely a good idea to check. Just snap some pictures of them testing charts, and look for any curves on straight lines.
Honestly, I'm still on the fence on placing my order in with Clove right now. Personally, might take the wait and see this time around. Though, my S8+ is pissing me off, can't wait until I get rid of it. |

Scheduled to arrive on MONDAY! I AM SO EXCITED it's not even funny.
XJ - Totally understand! Take your time. No big deal if you can't do it. Good luck on the move! Hope it all goes smoothly. Enjoy your XZP and make sure you take care of it during that move!
Musa - like rss_ndrsn said, i think it's just a propaganda. I also think the seemingly "widespread" camera distortion issue is propaganda as well. Yes, there is always a possibility of having a bad batch of phones and as a consumer, you should always check for the specs and features you've been sold, just to protect yourself. Like I said before, I don't think it's a software issue because anyone and everyone with an XZP on the same software would experience that issue and as far as we know, it seems limited to china/asia. Thinking about it some more, it doesn't seem like a hardware issue either because the distortion occurs in different areas of the frame, even in photos shot at the same angle with the same lighting. If it were hardware, like a poorly made lens, the distortion should occur at the same exact area of the frame in every photo you take. Kind of like a dust speck on the lens that always shows up in the same spot. I'll check my XZP when i get it, but i really think this is bullshit  and GLAD you are getting one!

MNX - no doubt it could happen, but personally, I think it is very unlikely a widespread issue like those blog posts are suggesting. Why is your S8+ pissing you off? Just sell it, get an XZP, and be happy .

@moogoo After using Vanilla Android for so long, I just could not stand what Samsung did to the UI... So, there's many things in the UI that just cannot stop annoying me. Personally, I dislike the color on the display. Hate the stupid bixby button, as I constantly press on it by accident.... Because it's a curved edge screen, there's no temper glass screen protector that has full adhesive. This will cause touch sensitivity to be reduced since the glass is not in direct contact. Since I'm really into a mobile game that requires constant contact with the screen, I have to go to a TPU film protector. Those are no fun. Honestly, if I wasn't forced to get a new phone...
Due to actually having a functional phone, I'm kind of leaning towards the wait and see approach. As there was quite a few issues with my Z1 as it was the earlier batch, which was resolved when I sent it back for a replacement. Though, I really want to get rid of my S8+. Probably won't sell it, just pass it over to my mother, as she's been wanting a new phone for a while.

Maratonmannen - thanks! I got the same case. it's sitting on my desk waiting for my XZP! haha! We're all gonna have similar looking phones it seems.
MNX - i hear ya. every time i see the samsung UI i want to puke. it's too much. i love the vanilla/sony approach. it's clean. as for screen protector, the roxfit one i have actually has adhesive over the entire back of the protector, not just along the edges. that was my biggest complaint with the one i got for my XZ, which i eventually ripped off cause it kept coming off. Only complaint with the roxfit one is they color in the top/bottom bezels instead of leaving it all clear. Not sure why they chose to do that. I'm going to see how it looks and decide whether I want to keep it on. But it definitely has adhesive all along the back and has full coverage over the curved glass edges.

not sure why people are going apeshit about squeezing the phone to launch the camera. sony has a dedicated camera button that does the same thing!
I wonder why Sony doesn't enable RAW format? It would be very much welcomed, but I suppose it's not really necessary for a mobile phone camera.

Here are 6 photos I took today. 3 with the XZ and 3 with the XZ Premium, both phones were set at max resolution 23mp and 19mp respectively and both were in manual mode with all other settings such as ISO and WB are set to auto. Let me know what you think of the image quality. Conditions aren't perfect as it was windy and slightly overcast today. Enjoy.

One thing I've noticed between the shots is even though the MP count has dropped on the XZ Premium the file size for each of the shots is pretty much the same as the XZ.

XJ - nice pics. XZP definitely has sharper images and cleaner details. especially around the corners. Very impressed. Can't wait to get mine! MONDAY won't be such a bad day this time around!
Also, I don't seem to notice any distortion whatsoever.

@moogoo The premium definitely has the cleaner images out of the two, colours are pretty much bang on with both pics as you'd expect as well. I think the HTC U11 will have a rival for top spot over at DXO when the finally get round to reviewing the device.

I'm very jealous XJ.
EE called me today to say they had cancelled the order. When I upgraded, they sent me an email to say I needed to call them as there was a problem with the order - but that went into my spam folder. They contacted me via text and told me I could upgrade for free by mistake - but it was actually going to be an extra £160! So in the end I told them to stuff it - while in a fit of pique.
Regretting it now. Pics looks great. |
