I just brought my P990 about a week after waiting for so long. It's a singapore ver. After upgrading it, it's a bit better but there is still many bugs.... hope will get better with the next FR. I think i'm gonna keep it till next FR released, cause right now i don't think i can do much with my P990i, Better use my old nokia 9300... which is basically nothing to compare with P990 |

@Jah, whats that about a "real warranty" all p990's are covered by se warranty, for a period starting at the date under th battery, their service centres cover any manufacturers faults, regardless whether u bought it new from a store or new or secondhand on ebay.

I'm puzzled about "date under the battery" thingy. Normally the warranty starts on the date of the invoice. So regardless of how long the phone has been sitting in the store, the actual warranty (2 years in P990 case) starts on the date you buy the phone.
I also agree with a later post that SE support is of little use to us at this point. I bet some of them are watching forums like this to get a grasp on the P990

"XIP (eXecute In Place) technology used in all pre-Symbian OS 9.x phones allowed system processes to be run directly from ROM memory, without having to be copied to RAM first. NAND-flash memory used in P990i (and all Symbian OS 9.x devices) is faster and cheaper, but it doesn't support execution "in place" so all system software has to be loaded to RAM. Because of this, even though the P990i has 64 MB of operating (RAM) memory for program execution (twice more than P910 and 4 times more than P900 and P800), only ~15.5 MB is free. It's almost 2,5 times more than in P900 (which only had 6-7 MB RAM free) but about 6 MB less than in P990's predecessor - the P910. With software properly optimized for smartphones' limited resources this reduced RAM size doesn't cause any serious problems and one can still run many (depending on size, even up to 10 or 15) applications simultaneously. However, very complex or unoptimized software may allocate a lot of free RAM and make it impossible to launch other applications at the same time. For example, running certain 3rd party software doesn't let the Messaging application run in the background and continue scheduled email downloads. It seems that developers writing software for UIQ 3 will have to learn how to use operating memory more efficiently so that not only their own software is able to run but also that it doesn't prevent other programs from running in the background. Some work to be done is also on Sony Ericsson side because current memory management is unefficient, if not just buggy"
I think this is the problem, faster but cheaper,,,,,, and we got the cheaper one... Thanks to SE for this.. cheerss, and we still like it thou... cause there is no other smart phone or even PDA phone have this perfect features... |

Thanx guys, for answering my question about the guarantee, but my problem about which online source to use is still remaining. Any suggested web sites?
Cheers

@siandy
Well said and explained in a nice and digestible and easy way to understand maybe some will now grasp the real problems faced by the new OS.

I feel i have to clarify this warranty concern;
In all my years owning SE phones i have never had a problem getting my service centre to do warranty work, normally same day if i ring them in th morning, very few of my phones have been bought from shops, mostly ebay or private, in most cases build date is couple of weeks before purchase & in the case of my P990, the date under th battery is week 39 (start of October)
My 2 years runs from THEN if i fail to produce a shop invoice proving otherwise.
However, a nice touch is that knowing the phone was unlikely to b sold the day it was made, the service centre give an extra 4weeks "allowance" this means in the case of my P990, i get a full 2yrs from the day i go it, this system has been same for long as i have owned SE phones.
My Orange P990 was brand new latest firmware with absolutely no useage issues to date. so luckily, warranty is not a big worry anyway.
Only thing i crave is a ONE TOUCH SPEAKERPHONE DESKTOP ICON !!!

Hello! I have just bought a P990 - I have tried to catch up and read this forum but I still have (at least) one newbee question. I seems in the discussions that you all have about 15Mb free RAM in your phone. I have just powered it up - I have two running applications (Seven Always On Mail - (takes 1.7MB) mail and Swiss Manager Pro) - Swiss Mgr says that I have 10,3Mb (16%) free RAM - is that normal?
Then I start messaging (which Swiss Mgr says takes 167K) - after that I only haves 7,1Mb (11%) free????
I tried earlier today to run a Java GPS application and it works until I read a SMS and answered a phone call - then it ended with "Out of memory"
Is it any way to free more RAM?
And question2 - where can I see witch firmware I use?
TIA / Kent

SVL_KENT:
The memory usage figures seem consistent to what I see on my P990. To see your current memory status and firmware, hit the top right button (FC) and select status, or in fo mode go to TOOLS and select System Information from the top menu.

I think that is normal. mine the same, you must learn to carefully launch program so that your P990i don't restarted so often. You will soon get used to it lol..... so wait till next firmware and see what new bugs are cheerrs!! |

I just bought my p9. I don't know if this is a bug or not. But while charging the backlight is on while the phone is turned off and you can see the battery meter only. Is the backlight supposed to be tuned on. It's kind of odd |

Just got my p990 for 4 days now and i got some newbie questions...
1. is there by any chance i could change my installed organizer and cda?
original:
ORGANIZER CXC 162092 R2A05
CDA CDA 162007/8 R2A04
I updated my phone using the update service and it did update the phone but not the above mentioned!
basically i would want to install an english virtual keyboard on my phone because what i have is in chinese!
2. When I want to install american english language it wont let me and the error message says that i have to install "sonyericssonp990languageID" first before installation.
3. How do you delete pre installed applications that the "uninstall" tool cannot detect? Because I am dying to delete Lunar calender on my phone and when I turned on my phone and checked the RAM the available memory is only 7+ mb and you guys have around 10+ free memory.
4. is it possible to set the phone that when everytime you FO the first thing to pop up is the shortcut menu?
5. How do you set-up the keys in PICOdrive sega emulator to get the most out of P990 controls? been dying to play sonic on my p990 and suck at predefining the controls!
Sorry If my questions have already been answered I am just too lazy to go through all 400+ posts! and to anybody who cares enought to answer the questions... thanks so much!

Yes, it's normal. However, if the phone is ON, backlight does turn off.

I think your P990 is the same with mine, it's singapore version and there is no update to R3 yet... so sad. dunno when will any upgrade for us.. by the way u can change your virtual keyboard to english from chinesse... no need to add language, just check again... it's right beside chinesse on the virtual keyboard, there is abc and 123. so choose it, that simple.. |

thanks siandy... letting me know that i am not alone. yeah I already know where to change the virtual keyboard language but it seems to transfer to chinese language by itself sometimes and its really annoying. Can' wait for the next fW update... hoping it would fix the memory issues so i wont experience reboot every so often! |
