Tai - damn, you wash your phone that often? haha. this is true though, water will seep under. most of the cheaper curved glass screen protectors only have adhesive along the outside edge. the roxfit one i got has adhesive covering most every part of the underside of the protector, much like regular stick on protectors. i still may end up taking it off and either getting something else or using bare glass. depends how it feels and definitely how it looks.
haven't heard from XJ today.. he must be playing with his XZP.

XJ - that sucks man. I'm waiting for your impressions to have your very own device in hand! I am hoping mine will arrive on Tuesday next week at the latest. Monday would amazing, but I doubt it. Hopefully, Clove will ship out units on Friday like their website says.

There are reports coming from Asia customers of lens distortion on XZP camera. Here are some samples https://talk.sonymobile.com/t[....]tion-issue/td-p/1226669/page/2
Better check your unit when received... |

ha. if this is a legit issue i am very surprised. maybe a bad batch released in asia?
If it was a serious issue, i would think at least ONE of the many, many reviewers out there would have picked up on it?
maybe a very well coordinated samsung smear campaign in an attempt to squash sales...

The same issue reported with XZs...

So it's probably a problem of new camera unit.

yea those pictures were posted in this thread last month when it first came up.
again, i don't know how this can be an actual consistent problem with the camera module and no reviewer out there has come across it.
those pictures look like it's from a chinese model. perhaps there's a bad batch of phones that were released in china. if it was a software issue, then all phones would have the same problem and reviewers would have noticed this type of distortion. that's why if it is a legit problem, it's probably hardware and probably limited to china/asia or that run of devices.
also, I don't see any original images being posted, as far as I can tell. I grabbed one of these photos from the talk.sonymobile.com website that allegedly showed distortion and used an exif analyzer to determine whether the image had been manipulated at some point. lo and behold, the analyzer returned a "probably" response. I repeated this on several of the other ones posted in the thread, selecting the ones without watermarks or markings in them as those would definitely show up as manipulated. They all came back "probably". To test the analyzer (I used imageedited.com), I analyzed one of my photos that was never edited and the response was "there is nothing in the metadata that indicates this file was edited".
This certainly doesn't PROVE anything and I am not saying it does. If those images on the thread are the originals, then I don't have much faith in them as being legit. Anyway, I am just throwing out possibilities. I HOPE this is not a true and legit and widespread issue. That would be heartbreaking. If this is some kind of underground smear campaign, then shame on whoever started it.

lol..
i don't speak french so i had to use google translate. is that a reputable website? seems like a bunch of bullshit to me
google translate says they calculate slightly above 300ppi on the XZP display. maybe that's not what they're saying, so please correct me if that's not the case. but if it is, then that's clearly utter bullshit. GSMarena did their microscope analysis too. I would think they would have caught the fact that the XZP had 500ppi less than it advertised.. not to mention, that's a whole lot of pixels to NOT notice with the naked eye.
also considering a 5.5" panel on other phones with FullHD resolution have 400ppi.. well.. i'm gonna have to call bullshit.

Yeah thats basically it.. it's very technical. But very weird that no one would notice. Basically the standard resolution they can conclude from zoooming in a 50x50 square on the screen is 850 x 1470, because sony panel ony show 34x17 compared to the the 50x50 it should.. But since the pixels arent aligned straight on the xzp sony uses a tech to fill up the empty spots. So if u take that into consideration ud get a 34x50 and extrapolating that to the whole screen u get 3840 x 1470 ( 747pp) which isnt the 800pp Sony is claiming and isnt true UHD either.
If any techheads could clear this up |

You can choose the model by message.
You'll need to tell the seller which model you have.
But i just switched to a Illumishield for curved edges!
I'll receive it with three or four weeks. Right on time when XZP will be available here!

Oh my God! I am so jealous! *Drooooooool*
XJ.. give us your impressions! The case looks great. Glad I got one. And if you'd be so kind as to take pics of standard geometric patterns to clear up the distortion bullshit that'd be awesome.
Man .. I'm so jealous. 5-6 more days for me 😞
@musa - think of it this way.. how is it possible to magically create a pixel where there isn't one? Things can be upscaled when they are lower resolution to a higher resolution and pixels can be added through analysis and extrapolation. That's how the x-reality engine works actually. But the additional pixels physically exist on the display panel. It's just a matter of making them display the correct color to make us see sharper details in images. There is no way to create a physical pixel on a display through software, which is what they're claiming if I understand you correctly. They're there or they aren't.

To be honest, I consider this "analysis" as nothing but a black propaganda against Sony. First off, there is no television that is for sale right now that has true 4k resolution (as in 4,096 by 2,160) or will ever be. This resolution is only a standard for production and digital projection of 4K content set by DCI (Digital Cinema Initiatives). What the TVs and the 4K content that is being broadcasted is actually 4K UHD or 3,840 by 2,160.
About the claim that XZ Premium screen does not get close to 800 ppi, you really have to have deeper understanding on how Sony designed the screen work. And plus, ~50 less pixels per inch is not far off from 800 ppi and does not make it any less of a 4K UHD. And that's why they said up to 800 ppi. |
