Update from anonymous source:
the new design will debut at MWC2018.
sir could you tell me more about this new design? is it different from the Z-XZ series (Omnibalance and loop)? I'm praying for a drastic design overhaul since the z5 family. They could use some inspiration from Xperia Ray or the Xperia NXT series (S,P,U) - the U led strip is awesome, or the LED strip from W980 or an xperia logo that lights up.

That is some good news for the XZP, I was starting to get worried... It has then probably 12 months from reveal to reveal.
It seems they are playing it safe with the new XZ, which is unsurprising as the new design is in the starting blocks (MWC).
Also glad to hear about the flagship Compact from another source. A bit sad regarding design, especially since the Compacts rather follow the one per year cycle, so IFA 2018 for the new designed Compact. Still, the return of a flagship Compact outweighs this easily.
Thanks @josephnero.

Regarding this whole thing about Sony not enabling fingerprint sensors in the US, I had read that the contract that's got them tied to that will end next year. Does anyone have any info on that? Not that it matters much to me since I'm in Canada, but at least it would be one less thing for them to get ding'd on by reviewers.

What I could find regarding this subject:
Sony makes a lot of phones, and many of them aren't particularly noteworthy in the U.S. Thanks to a long-term contract with Verizon that isn't set to expire until next year, Sony can't sell phones with fingerprint sensors in the country, making them more of a difficult proposition than they otherwise would be.

Well it has registered a number of patents for 'behind the screen' tech in the past. It's about time they started using them.

thanks for the post!
I'm just wondering what "borderless" means here.
I couldn't find any part describing it in the translated article, but probably lost in translation.
Could you explain it?
Thanks! |

designer only said they are looking into it. there is no time line
on the other hand, they could make a borderless phone when every country buys the same design and software, not some country is more gimpy than the another country. that would be truly 'borderless' |

if i'm reading that chart correctly, it says so far in FY17, they've already shipped 16.5 smart phones? that would be incredible. but i don't think i'm reading it correctly. haha

Unfortunately, you got that one wrong. Sony's fiscal year begins on 1 April and ends on 31 March, so it's basically a quarter behind the calender year. Sony actually shipped 2.9 million smartphones in the last quarter (see column FY16 Q4; vs. 3.4 million in FY15 Q4) and 14.6 million smartphones in the fiscal year 2016 (see column FY16 FY; vs. 24.9 million FY15). 16.5 million smartphones is their forecast for the fiscal year 2017 (1 April 2017 - 31 March 2018).
