Does the functionality of touch screen reduce over the years??? and if it reduces what can be the solution to it???

I've not had a phone for years, so I can't really answer that one.

I think that the W960 screen will be better than previous ones because dust and grit can't get in where the screen meets the side of the case.

Haven't seen a post from you for quite a while, hopefully you're still around.

Since you got to play around with the W960i, can you let me know if the 3 soft keys can be pressed not by pressing right on them on screen, but by pressing slightly below (ie. where the 3 Walkman functions play/pause, prev and next are) ? This would mean that that part of the phone is permanently touch-sensitive (not only when Walkman is on) and that would avoid a lot of smudge on the screen.

I'd love to know about that (sorry if it doesn't look like such a big deal to most people !!)

Hi,

Not been on the boards for a bit, just saw your post.

I've just got a new prototype which has a few small improvements. I'll have a check and let you know.

I do think that the audio controls are linked with the keyboard and not the touch screen though.

EDIT: No, you have to touch the screen. The phone is a finger print magnet anyway, so you'll soon forget about things like that.

Hey Jimster,
Thought of another unrelated question after I hit REPLY -- does SE make you put that disclaimer in your posts if you want to be on a forum?

Wondering if you're able to outline any changes in this new prototype? I'm interested in the development/testing stages of these devices, on the hardware AND software side. What is your job exactly? Do you test units, like QA?

Also, wondering if you can give some insight into the functionality of the MUSIC keys that were just discussed. First off, it does seem that these areas of the unit ARE touch-sensitive; are you saying that these 'keys' (the music icons) are ONLY visual indicators of a CHANGE in functionality of the bottom 3 on-screen keys? This would make little sense to me as you would lose those three functions, which would mean you could no longer perform a lot of music-related functions, go into settings, etc. Can you please clarify on this?

Additionally, in watching some live videos of this phone in action, if those music icons ARE actually KEYS, it seems they only function at certain times. When you are INSIDE the walkman player, and music is playing, they seem to light up. If you pause, or minimize the app, the icons go away. If you minimize while playing music, the icons again GO AWAY -- this seems illogical, as you then lose your most important quick-access music controls (since there are no STATIC, HARDWARE-BASED music buttons). If you are on the main screen, and scroll to select the walkman desktop widget, the icons come back. Once you scroll off, they go away.
It would be nice if whenever music is playing, regardless of where you are in the UI or what you're doing, these icons are lit and ACTIVE. They de-activate when you exit the walkman UI and dont have music playing in the background. --- Maybe suggest this to the product development and design team?

Also... what's the good word within SE about release of this phone? Has it still not been released to manufacturing?

one more thing which is boggling me so much is.. the memory which is inbuilt..

In view of performance, its always better for a phone to have an extendable meomry. But this one doesnt. The whole lot of memory is inbuilt..

Wont this be a concern in the phones performance in terms of speed and functioning without hanging..??

i dont really think this is a relevant concern.
the storage ram is likely completely separate from the system's operating system-allocated RAM.
If anything, internal RAM may be FASTER than storage card because your 'weakest link' in the 'speed chain' may not be dependant on memory card I/O speed... the RAM being built into the board is then only limited by the actual speed of the RAM chip and the method of interconnecting this storage RAM with the rest of the system. However then either storage card or built in RAM may ALSO be limited by another interconnect -- USB. If USB is slower than the theoretical speed of the RAM, then USB is holding you back to as fast as it can keep up, and no faster.

Interesting, huh?

Thanks Jimster! Is it glass? Or hard plastic? So I'm guessing it works via a capacitive system rather than the P1 resistive touchscreen?

I'm still undecided between the P1 and the W960... so far the W960 is still in the lead, but with the new 8GB M2 cards, the P1 is closing in... specially since the P1 has a much lower price tag than I expected... and it's getting cheaper as I wait for the launch of the W960...

Only time will tell...

Exactly the point i was raising. It would be great if those 3 keys could be used at all times, as there is no dedicated hardware music player button (despite what the white pages say, but i think they're a copy/paste from the W950i).

I always carry the phone in my pocket and the absence of a hardware button makes the whole Walkman experience much less enjoyable... imagine having to pull out the phone every time you want to pause or switch songs (though for the latter, hopefully a long press on the volume keys will do it...)

Apparently, for all common functions where the 3 soft keys appear, you have to press on the screen itself rather than on the Walkman touch-sensitive keys, which is a shame, as it smudges the screen unnecessarily (why not make the best of those 3 keys??). This is just a software issue, as the 3 keys are already physically, so it's just a matter of re-programming them and it would add a little plus to the UI.

Is it utopic to expect this in the retail version of the phone ?

Isn't the "W" in the keypad a hardware music button?

hi,
well i have few questions about w960i.
How much ram does it have(hope its like p1i's!)?
Does it record videos on 30fps?
Will its volume be atleast as loud as w900i(w950i's volume sucked real bad, n almost every other se phone's volume is lower than that of nokia's n73 or other n series)?
Will it have phone lock thingy like the one in s60 series(nokia)..cuz its quite pathetic to not have that(my w900i doesnt have it )?
N,
Why the hell doest it have only 3x zoom!!????????

Thanks to anyone who can answer it, also if these question were posted earlier(i tried search n cudnt find em), then i m sorry.

Well, here is the list of hardware buttons taken from the W960 white pages:
On/Off button.
Keypad with 12 keys.
WalkmanŽ key
C (Cancel) key
Jog Dial, 3-way: up, down and inward.
Back button to switch back a view. Pressing and holding turns the keylock on and off when in standby view.
Play/stop button for the WalkmanŽ player. Also mutes/unmutes the FM Radio.
Volume up/down rocker key. Long press on this button skips to previous or next track or radio station.

That would imply there is a hardware button (play/pause) other than the Walkman button on the main keypad, but it's nowhere to be seen on any W960 picture. Besides, i don't really find the Walkman button to be a practical button at all if you have the phone in your pocket or in a pouch as you'd have to blindly touch around the keypad to locate it and press it. A button on the side of the phone (like on the W950 and so many other models) would be so much more practical.

@djin

Answers to most of your questions can be found on the SE website or various other sources, but here they are nonetheless :

1) 128MB RAM
2) it does record videos at 30fps though only in QCIF format. for QVGA the frame rate is only 15 fps
3) for the volume, can't tell. ask someone like Jimster71 who has tested the phone, or else let's assume that the speaker volume will be reasonably loud like most Walkman-branded models.
4) if by phone lock, you mean the possibility to lock the phone, should another SIM card be inserted or simply at every turn on, then yes it will have it, like most SE phones, Symbian-based or not.
5) it has only a 3x zoom because it's a Walkman phone and camera performance is not a priority. Besides, 3x or 4x zoom does not make such a difference, and honestly using a digital zoom should be avoided altogether, it just makes the picture quality worse.

Hey thanks benitorios.
By phone lock i mean like u know, u need to put a phone lock code each time u wanna access ur phone(not the one in se phone like the code only on startup). I need this code because it helps me protect my data and messages etc from unwanted people.

Also if jimster71 can help me with the volume issue then it wud be great.

hey buddy, why do you need more volume?? its worse if you listen to music from the speakers of any mobile, i wuld rather prefer to listen from a computer speakers rather than a mobile speakers and i think even if you put the headfones the sound is high enough for our hearing pleasure....remember sound always goes haywire at high volumes in any mobile......

and zoom its just a walkman fone and we should be happy tht it has 3.2Mp instead of crying on digital zoom, which is anyhow unnecessary as it decreases the image quality.
