P800 surely delayed to december!? |

Needs and wants, I've got the money, so I'll buy a P800. What can I do with it, I can play games in colour, I can tke photos, I can work on spreadsheets (which would've meant I wouldn't have to be in at work right now (9pm Sunday night)... because the device would be convenient enough that I would actually use it... okay I accept I don't need a P800 for all of this, other devices will do these things as well or better that are out now, but I think if one device will do it and I will carry it with me at all times, then that will suit me pretty well. If you don't want it fine.
Obviously not everyone is going to want one, mobile phones are in many ways just image wear, like sunglasses or watches. They all (mostly) do the same job, but some can cost $5 and some can cost $5000. My gf just bought me a nice bottle of champers last week, an '83 Salon, it's not like everyone needs one, but if you can get it, and you can appreciate the difference, you'll really enjoy it.
So I am looking forward to a P800, just hoping the wait isn't too long. I guesss it depends where the delay in se's production cycle is coming from, is it inadequate testing? not enough software? or just difficulty ramping the production up. It could be that se release small numbers of the P800 in september/october, but doesn't do a major launch until they can put enough phones in the stores to make it worth while. With a more complex device like this, they'll pay to sell it out of shops with a decent level of support ('cause it's bound to have a few bugs, and constant hard reboots will piss peeps off, so they are going to need knowledgeable service staff).
That would be my guess actually, that way they say to their analysts, we haven't delayed the model (by putting about 50 in the stores), but don't really release it until the christmas rush is on us. |

I agree with faca, but I would like to say that I don't want or need to show my toys to someone. A lot of people will not even understand what a P800 is... My friends will tell me (again!) that I'm a fucking geek, and they'll be right (again!). I have an iPAQ THAT WORKS PERFECTLY with my T39, a quite useless T65. The P800 is just another toy, but I like it, I can afford it, and I will buy it. I know that's stupid too. But we all are just monkeys with a better good looking human shape, pretending to be men.

For all you nay sayers that insist that the P800 will bereleased in Dec, please take note of the following article I copied for you from the SE developer world website...
Sony Ericsson at Sybase TechWave 2002
Sony Ericsson participated at Sybase's TechWave 2002 user training and solutions conference arranged on August 5-9 at the San Diego Convention Center, California. We exhibited in the m-Business Pavilion and demonstrated the P800, a GSM/GPRS triband smartphone that runs iAnywhere Ultralite db and is shipping fall 2002. Philip Vanhoutte, Corporate Vice President of Marketing at Sony Ericsson, participated in a panel discussion in the opening keynote of the conference.
....please note the statement "shipping in fall2002". December is Winter -thank you! |

No ... I don't think you can work on spreadsheet ... as the P800 has only the 'viewer' for most M$ Office formats. SE will probably have to pay a bundle to M$ if they want to have the editing feature. And I don't think M$ will be nice enough to give it away cheap as they will be setting up the P800 to kill off Pocket PC. Any 3rd party software will probably costs the moon with all the M$ licensing thingy.
It's the same with the OS. Everyone is going for Symbian and M$ is going alone with their own Stinger OS.

That's true, SE announced some viewers of the most common documents, pdf, doc, xls, but no license or royalty is need, neither to view nor to edit (save) in those formats. I'm working in a company that builds applications for massive printing using an IBM format, AFP, and we provide coverters for almost all the existing 'viewing' formats. 'Edit' a file in a certain format is nonsense, we can open it or save it, and third parties could easily provide even freeware editors, like open office under win.

@Froddan
got affected or hit with my post boy? i know a child is like that. just because i posted that you got irked by it. tsk tsk tsk... admit it the p800 leaves your 7650 in the dust. SE made a better toy! i do not consider these gadgets a toy for i need them for my simple, typical everyday use. it's like a world without a car and these gadgets will be the future. if some of the guys do not want it then go back to the darkages i would suggest. if anyone got pissed off with my post again then you are also a child understand. |

Isn't that exactly what I said? The P800 will have more uses than the 7650, just as the 7650 has more uses than the t68. And I will get a P800 when it gets on the market. But it's not out yet, is it????
Untill P800 hits the market, the 7650 is the most suitable phone for my uses.
You see, I don't care what brand logo the phone has, as long as it has the features I need and works as it's meant to.

Friends,
just got an email reply from SE regarding my query on the release date for P800 and here' the reply:
"Dear Consumer,
Thank you for contacting Sony Ericsson Customer Care Center.
The P800 is planned to be released sometime this fall. At the present I cannot give you any exact date.
Best regards,
/Bjvrn

Question:
Subject: Contact form CWS
Product: T68iT68i
Opinion: With reference to your press release stating an expected official release date of your P800 to be in the Q3 of 2002, is this still the case or is the release likely to be delayed into Q4 due to the memory card and MP3?
If so, could you give me an estimated timeframe?
-----------------
So afterall, it seems as though SE will release as scheduled sometime in Q3. In addition, there was an article on www.mobil.nu stating that Sony has released a couple of "Clie" models in Asia prior to its official launch....could naturally be the case here as well given its "official launch" first in December....
Well, I hope so...
On another note, T300 is being released end of the month in the Netherlands. Shortly after that we are all hoping for the big one!

Everyone else!?! Please, not everybody here needs the newest expensive toy to show off in front of their friends and be cool. P800 is a nice experiment, but I don't think a lot of people (normal people, not tech geeks) will actually buy it. Why would they? Believe it or not, most people buy mobile phones for only one reason - to make phone calls (OK, and maybe use SMS). Why do you need a P800? What do you plan to do with it?

True. This (and the T68 models) would be considered buisness phones. The main appeal of the P800 is that it removes the need of a seperate PDA (something my pocket will like . And that's why I personally want one. I am tired of dragging around my Palm AND my phone. And have to look in my palm for contact info not stored in the phone (address or contacts that for some reason isn't in the phone).

@jplacson: Launch campaigns accompany the launch of a product. That's why they are called 'launch' and not 'advertisement' campaign. So, the P800 launch campaign will start when the P800 is launched. And that will be in December...

Well. I suppose it's a logical argument that a Launch campain would be at the product launch. But product launches need not be when they become available. I don't know what SE calls the compain on the T68i that was running a couple of weeks ago. But it IS the only public launch the product have had. So it may be the product launch to SE even tho it has been available for months. |
