Nexans fiber optic cable system to link Kuwait and Iran
Posted: 09-06-2005 , 15:07 GMT
Nexans, the worldwide leader in the cable industry, has been awarded a contract to supply all the submarine and land fiber optic cable, as well as cable accessories to create a new telecommunications link between Kuwait and Iran.
The contract, which includes branches to Failakah (Kuwait) and Kharg (Iran) islands and the Soorosh oil platform, has been awarded by Emirates Telecommunications & Marine Services FZE (e-marine) who are constructing the link on behalf of the Kuwait Ministry of Communications (MOC) and the Telecommunications Company of Iran (TCI).
The total system route is approximately 380 km straight across the Gulf from Kuwait City to Ganeveh in Iran, including land cables in both countries. The cable will be of the unrepeatered type URC-1 with 12 optical fibres providing an initial capacity of 2.5 Gigabit/second, upgradeable in accordance with future traffic requirements, with heavy armour protection giving a total cable weight of approximately 900 tonnes. The submarine cable will be laid at a depth of up to 50 m.
The submarine cable, manufactured in Nexans' Rognan plant located in the northern part of Norway, is scheduled for delivery in June 2005. The accessories will be shipped out from Rognan together with the main cable. The land cable with accessories will be shipped from Oslo.

Mobile phone giant extends footprint in Saudi Arabia with world’s largest Nokia concept store
Nokia has taken large strides into the Middle East’s largest mobile phone market, Saudi Arabia, by opening three Nokia branded Concept Stores across the kingdom, including the world’s largest Concept Store in Riyadh. The Riyadh Concept Store was officially opened by Nokia’s General Manager for Middle East and North Africa, Eddie Maalouf, joining its companion stores in Jeddah and Khobar.
“Saudi Arabia is an important market for all companies in the Middle East and this week’s activities will help support our ambitions for the kingdom,” said Eddie Maalouf, General Manager, Nokia Middle East and North Africa. “Our strategy is to become as close to the consumer as possible, to provide the highest end-to-end level of service and quality throughout the shopping experience.”
The layout and design of the the three stores follows the same pattern as Nokia Concept Stores around the world to guarantee an easy and informative shopping experience. With a simple-to-navigate setup, large uncluttered windows, open doorways and low-glare lighting, the store provides a relaxed and satisfying customer experience. The high-tech display terminals and dedicated areas for Imaging, Smart, Multimedia, Business and Entry phones make it easy for the public to keep up to date on the latest technologies and trends in the mobile industry. The Riyadh store measures approximately 230 square meters.
“Nokia’s Concept Store strategy is to provide consumers with a three-dimensional experience with the Nokia brand. We do this with great care to design all elements of the retail outlet with great attention to detail. Our aim is to create a unique and holistic shopping experience for our customers,” said Eddie Maalouf.
Skilled sales personnel provide demonstrations of the latest mobile wireless phone capabilities and offer expert customer service to new and returning customers looking to buy, maintain or enhance their phones. Customers also will find the latest Nokia enhancements, branded clothing and bags, ring tones, graphics, games and software.

Qtel signs 20 million Euros contract with Siemens Communications
Posted: 06-07-2005 , 10:27 GMT
At a joint press event Tuesday, Qtel signed a contract worth 20 million Euros with Siemens Communications for the supply, installation and commissioning of a Universal Mobile Telecommunications System (UMTS) network, that will pave the way for 3G services.
UMTS represents an evolution in terms of capacity, data speeds and new service capabilities from second generation networks.
The press event was attended by Qtel Chairman Sheikh Abdullah Bin Mohammed Bin Saud Al-Thani, Qtel CEO Dr. Nasser Marafih and Siemens Communications Vice President for Middle East, Soenke Peters and Siemens Communications Director of Sales, Qais Esrawee. Qtel Executive Director for Wireless Services, Fahad Bin Jassim Al-Thani, Qtel Executive Director for Group Communications, Waleed Al-Sayed and other senior Qtel and Siemens management were also present.
Qtel Chairman Sheikh Abdullah Bin Mohammed Bin Saud Al-Thani said, “I am very pleased to announce our partnership with Siemens Communications, a company that already has a strong position in the GSM/GPRS segment in the Middle East. This agreement is another step towards highlighting our active preparations for the Doha Asian Games 2006, the second largest sporting event after the Olympics.”
“As Qtel is the official telecommunications partner for the games, we are serious about our commitment and support towards meeting the world-class technological requirements for the games and ensuring that Qtel too plays a big role in organizing the best Asian games ever,” continued Sheikh Abdullah.
Siemens Communications will supply, install and commission a 3G/UMTS network based on Wideband Code-Division Multiple-Access (W-CDMA) technology, including their latest generation of W-CDMA base stations (Node Bs) that can offer theoretical peak data rates of up to 14.4 Mbit/s with the support of High Speed Downlink Packet Access (HSDPA). The company holds a prime spot worldwide in commercially installed Node Bs.
(W-CDMA) is one of the main technologies for the implementation of third-generation (3G) cellular systems. It is a standard developed and supported by GSM proponents. Qtel is the third company in the region to sign up for W-CDMA network with Siemens Communications and aims to introduce HSDPA at the earliest opportunity.
HSDPA is an upgrade of WCDMA network. It significantly improves the capacity of the network and increases the download speed several folds. “The installation of the region’s 4th UMTS network is a landmark achievement for Qatar and a positive step towards enhanced features and services for both the people of Qatar and those visiting the country during the games. We have a long partnership with Qtel and commend them for their vision and foresight which has been displayed throughout the years. Today they are proving once again that Qatar is truly becoming one of the region’s most dynamic markets,” said Soenke Peters, Vice President, Siemens Communications Mobile Networks Division, Middle East Headquarters.
Qtel CEO Dr. Nasser Marafih said that Qtel subscribers and guests to the country will enjoy the many benefits and applications from 3G services in time for the Doha Asian Games in December of 2006. “With the launch of 3G, our customers will experience a whole new dimension of mobile services including applications such as videotelephony, video messaging and video mailbox including streaming live and recorded breaking news and sports events and video based alerts, said Dr. Marafih. “This will be particularly useful for sports fans as they can quickly share results. For example, when a goal is scored a video clip can be sent to the customer.”
