Sonera supports TLS here in Finland and you do not have to include the entire xxxx@gmail.com as your log in, at least on my phone (s700i). Gmail is pretty fast here.

What is the advantage of sending an SMS over GPRS rather than using the SMSC?

Hate to tell you. Nothing is free. Are you really so naive to think that a GSM operator will give away something for free? You pay for it by the packet, or buy the cost that is hidden but rest assured, you are paying for it somewhere. It was like when people were trying to use the so-called "free" smsc, but the operators simply charged for the SMS anyway. Nothing is free in mobile telephony. Even the flat rate GPRS services are not free. They are taking an average usage and charging accordingly. So, I hate to tell you and your friends that believe this, but you are paying in some way.

@c_vignesh

I asked a friend from Vodafone about the free SMS of GPRS and he has never heard of it. He said all packets are billed no matter what. The so-called "flat rates" are never really flat in that they take the average usage and add a percentage on top of it to cover costs even for users who have a lower than average monthly usage. I think you might be the victim of a myth. We had the same thing with the "free to use SMSC's". They were never free. Also Flat rates are used in immature markets to get the customers used to the services before the operators slam them with usage tariffs.
