the maximum charge for an sms on the new series of 902/802 fones is 3 jpy per sms. yr info pertains to older non 902/802 series fones. pls check the japanese site.
no vodafone japan fone has been successfully unlocked to date. this includes previous 801 series using the same usim. no publically available unlocking hack which works on the v800 and other models available abroad has ever been known to work on a fone bought in japan. it is indeed a hard coated reason for this.

by the way, what's the firmware version on the japanese v802se?

its R1G001.
I was able to find in the SE knowledge base for the 802SE why mp3s aren't playing (at all). According to that page, the japan version of the phone will only play DRM encoded files that are encoded ONLY with the Seperate Delivery Method (this is different than the european version, the v800). This TOTALLY SUCKS DONKEYS.... It was like 50% of why I got the phone.... what is the purpose of having an MP3 player phone with duo stick pro that will ONLY play mp3s you download from content providers? (how much would it cost you to get a few hours worth of music? I could buy 3 ipods probably...)
Why does Japan (and sony!) have to be so difficult?!?

so what's the difference specs-wise between the v800 and the v802? is it just the firmware and language pack? is everything else, like the hardware the same?
i heard that the v802 can playback macromedia flash but the v800 cannot. is this just plain hearsay?

unfortunately not, the V800 will play any mp3s, and will let you use DRM protected files (mp3s or wavs, etc) as ringtones, so the DRM packer can basically create a stand-alone file that includes rights permission with it, you load it into the phone and everything is good.
the V802 on the other hand... will only play mp3s that use Seperate delivery DRM encoding. meaning it checks the web for the key to unlock the file when you want to play it the first time on a new phone to see if you have permission to play it. I have to figure out how to set up my own DRM rights server or some BS like this in order to play ANY mp3s of my own. this is really really absurd, and its not about copyrights, its about nickel and diming consumers for everything possible... considering it also bars you from listening to public domain MP3s, MP3s legally purchased from a different service or MP3s ripped from your own CDs.
BUT... the other day I dug out my old Ericsson HPM-10 MP3 attachment that I bought in HK back in 2002:
and it works with the V802SE! ha!

what you say about the 802se requiring separate delivery rights management may be true. i do not know.
however, the link i gave you will allow you to download the drm packager. this packager permits you to create yr own separate delivery rights management server to download approval from. it has an area in the packager that allows you to enter the web address which yr fone will check to receive the digital rights approval code.
therefore, if in fact separate delivery drm is required for the 802se, then this will solve yr problem.
i believe on this point of the se drm packager being effective to overcome the perceived problem ithere is no difference between the v800 and the 802se.
on the other hand, it is a great deal of work. |

I downloaded the DRM packer as soon as i figured out that it woudn't play unpacked mp3s, unfortunately Seperate deliver, as I understand it, isn't quite as simple as just loading the rights file to a web address. I think you need to actually have it 'push' the rights file into the phone via MMS or something (from my glancing of the scant documentation for SD).
BUT on better news: I am in China right now, upon landing I was able to quickly switch the v802 to GSM mode and make a local phone call (at a horribly steep rate of course). My unlocked T300 with a local prepaid SIM is serving as a local line now.
Also I was able to get in touch with the distributor for that 'Cruiser' system in China, they gave me the contact number for someone in Shenzhen who may be able to try their luck with the 802. I'm a bit worried they might f-up the phone, but maybe at least i can get him to turn off that annoying photo snapping noise!

lynn,
with respect to the differences between the v800 and 802se, there is a white paper from se that mentions the following info:
Feature V800 Vodafone V802SE Vodafone
Messenger Yes No
MMBox No Yes
International prefix No Yes
Pictograms No Yes
Positioning No Yes
name of the whitepaper on the se global developer site is:
wp_v800_r3a-1.pdf
so you can do a search for it. very interesting, if long, read.
after reading it, i really miss the messenger application. hopefully vodafone japan will introduce it in a big way at some point, since it seems very well fit for our market here.
thnx
