One of the problems with integrated devices is that the speed of development of the different 'parts'.

When the characteristics of one of the 'parts' become outdated or obsolete, you have to change the whole or live with your partly useless device.

Also integrated devices become much to complex. Too much menus to plow through.

I agree with masseur. There'll be a day where these devices will become so alike that it's difficult to distinguish the two. Nevertheless, I personally believe that the gap will not be narrowed in the near future.

I think the gap has already been narrowed, by sony-ericsson no less. The pxxx is a hybrid between phone and pda, is it not? Is that not basically what a smartphone is?

What I meant 'the gap will not be narrowed' was refering to majority of people would still prefer to use a combination of both - that is a mobile phone with pda. Sorry for the misunderstanding!

@YEOPK

I think the more logical is that more people are realising the many advantages of having one device instead of two. THis is why the smartphone market is booming whereas the PDA's is stagnant.

Ok I have just managed to "OverClock" my Fujitsu Siemens LOOX 420.... It has a 400Mhz Processor but I have managed to push it 520Mhz which is exactly what the new LOOX 720 is running on...so all I am missing out on now is Pocket PC 2003 SE (which will be available soon as an update)..oh yeah and the VGA screen which I am not to bothered about as QVGA will be perfectly fine for me.

Oh yeah and the video playback is absolutley cool...

P.s has anyone managed to overclock there PDA? and what speed does the P910 run on anyone have an idea?

What about over heating?

Is it possible to overclock a Pxxx?

I won't say that the pda market is stagnant cos there're still market for people who prefer to use two devices instead of one, mainly for precaution / safety purposes. I, for one prefer to use two. I would carry the two for business/day to day use but when come to dinner/function, I would leave my pda at home cos I do not want to carry something that weigh about 150g in my pocket. A T610 would do the job.

I think a lot of people still prefer two devices insted of one because either they dont want such a bulky phone, or a smart phone is too limited. But as technology develops the line will blur furthur. as for loosing all your info... Orange UK now has a FREE sync service online that will sync via SyncML to your phone/pda and to your pc so data loss is can be minimised by centralised backup. Lose your phone/pda and call orage care - they send you a new one. Sync it to Orange, back to where you were ish...

now that I have used my new iPAQ hx4700 for a week and a half I am even more committed to keeping the separates.

as good as the P910 screen is with its 260k colours etc it just cannot match the fantastic 4" screen on this iPAQ and now that landscape mode is built into the latest OS I just cannot see me making any other choice for the forseeable future

with the latest range of pocketpc, especially iPAQ and the new ASUS, I definitily don't think the market for such devices is stagnant

btw, one thing I am pleased about is that all the smart movie (AVI) videos I have collected for the P900/P910 play excellently on the iPAQ, perhaps even better than on the P910 and in full screen on tha 4" display. I can't see me watching another movie on the P910 again unfortunately

pocket internet explorer is even better with the VGA resolution and they have improved the word and excel modules too. WIfi and BT are much simplied in the latest OS as well

no, I dont think its time for me to say goodbye to the PDA yet!

I'm sure it's not time to say goodbye to pda. I have both smartphone and pda.If I compared a comfort to work with them;the winner is pda.Much bigger screen and better resolution for pda.Smarts are good for young ppl with keen

i think as smartphone becomes better, it is just hard to justify buying and carrying 2 devices.

the trend has started with smartphone eating into the low-to-mid end of pda (i.e. people who are not compulsive users of pda are already shifting). And it will slowly eat into the high-end.

maybe another way of looking at it is that pda is not dying. It is just evolving by adding on wireless functions.

For quite some time to come, there will be a strong market for both d hybrid devices & dedicated pdas. However, someday we shall have to say goodbye to dedicated PDAs as we know them today. They will evolve into integrated devices as technology opens new vistas.

Meanwhile, d line between phones with pda features and pdas with phone capabilities is growing so indescernable in many instances that there is no point bothering with it the issue. Call them what u will, d hybrid device is here 2 stay.

I also agree that most people dont need pda functions, so d 'normal' phones will stay for d average Joe, definitely coming with multimedia features.

So, if pdas are not dying, why sony exited from the market and stop producing clie and why palm is also slowing down and thinking going out too. What's coming after T5?

Worldwide sales of pdas are down by 20% while mobile phone users are going uptrend! If pda sales are going down, why some other brands are selling well such as hp and O2 xda II mini?

Wht's your predictions?
