Well, whenever I spoke to Orange they were quoting £15 a month minimum. And you cant get out of the 4 month tie-in. But we shall see.
Those people who have changed tariffs to the cheapest from the highest will probably be getting a letter through soon asking them if they want to stay on the 4 month tie-in or give Orange retail a £100 back towards the cost of the phone.

That's because most of their own staff don't really know much about the HSD tariff, which is why i stressed this point when Orange released the handset! You have to tell them about it - which is usually followed by an "oh! here it is...." from the C/S rep.
Oh, and no clawback from Orange retail. There's no 4months minimum term, unless you're stupid enough to buy it from CPW or an internet dealer etc (or you may find that it's even cheaper that way, even if you stick to the 4months). |

I don't understand why It is stupid as well, people here don't seem to understand that not everyone can go out and get onto another contract...i'm not gonna be here in the UK forever, so another contract would just mean more expenses for me... I could care less if i pay more at purchase. I don't need a contract and if i have to pay more that so be it. Subsidizing is just that, your have to pay it out every month. |

I didn't say it was stupid to buy it at CPW - i said it was stupid to buy it on an Orange contract at CPW IF all you are trying to get is a SIM free phone for the cheapest price.
No problem with you buying it from them SIM free! My point was, CPW charge around the same prices for the handset (£200-£300) but you have to stay on the same tariff for 3-4months at least - when instead, you can go to Orange direct, get the phone for the same price, and then switch tariffs immediately without penalty. If you're buying the contract to actually use it too - no problem there! Just that many people, like me, took out a new contract to use the handset with another SIM, and for them getting it from CPW makes no sense whatsoever. |

Bought mine from an Orange shop & talked into a higher package than I had intended based on false info about the access pack giving me unlimited GPRS (only fair use on GPRS WAP & not on GPRS Internet).
At the time I could have had phone for £329.99 on a £15 tariff but got it for £299.99 on a £25 tariff.
I complained & because they gave me incorrect info they are refunding my GPRS Internet costs (over 2MB) and letting me go back to the tariff I originally wanted £16 T-mobile 60 Anytime equivalent with PAYG GPRS at the end of this month.
They confirmed I would not have to pay anymore for the phone & that the shop would not get as much commision due to bad selling. |

So Simion_levi...do you think it's a better idea to get it on orange and pay out the 12months than to get it SIM free? i mean if it still is cheaper for me to get a contract...i might look into that. I just would hate having two lines. I don't have a contract with Orange to begin with. |

@Zoidy: Can i just point out that mine is a different case to most people buying on a new contract because i was upgrading and just stayed on the same tariff i've been on for a while. The upgrade price is FIXED irrespective of what tariff you happen to be on, and that price is 300 quid at CPW. This will definitely be cheaper for me over a year than the sim free price of 500 quid, plus all the benefits Simion has pointed out such as the insurance (orange care is included on the HSD plan) which i consider VERY important on a handset like this. |

That is: phone at either £200 or £300 on high/low tariff, then changing tariff immediately to HSD = 12months x £10 = £120 plus unlock fee of £20 from Orange (or £30 elsewhere).

Could i just say that this is an extreme example of downgrading tariff - you would need the change to be implemented BEFORE your first billing date occurs which could be just a few days after you buy the phone, yet you need your account to be set up on their computers, giving you a very small window to get this right. It's more probable you will end up paying the full whack for the first month and then 11 months at 10 quid. Also you need to buy it somewhere where clawback is not a problem, which is pretty much only the orange shop. |

the cheapest way to get the p800 is on t-mobile!
you pay £270 for the handset
then pay £15 a month for 12 months = £180
so £270 + £180 = £450

@butterguy - yup, what really swung it for me was the included insurance on the right tariffs (as onionz says, HSD tariff has Orange care included). True, i also managed to pay about £80 less overall than the SIM free price, which is always good, and could've paid £180 less if i'd not been conned slightly by the guy in the Orange shop, but there is no way i can carry a P800 around all day knowing that if it got snatched or broken, there'd be no replacement forthcoming. With Orange care, i've got that cover - and they are probably the best mobile cover available, 24hour handset replacement, cover for theft, loss, accidental damage etc and are very good with claims - i bought my 7650 last year through Orange for the same reason.
@onionz - yup, this is what i did - changed tariffs an hour after getting home - i.e. just a few hours after i'd bought the damn thing! Point was, Orange ask you when you want to be billed - i didn't really think about it, so just said end of the month (28th of each month). Luckily it was the 21st that i bought it - so when changing tariffs, i was told (and they were right, since i've now got my bill!) that i'd be charged a 1 week proportion of my original tariff, then be on the HSD from then on. So make your billing date a few days after the purchase date, and it's very easy! Oh, and definitely agree on the need to buy from Orange retail shops - that's why i said above about it being pointless getting a P800 on O contract from CPW, if you are intending to do this. |
