People keep focusing on sensor size and ignore the fact that it's the pixel size that matters. Xperia 1 has larger pixels than any Xperia before. Likewise, it undoubtedly has the best overall camera performance on any Xperia before including the XZ2 Premium. |

Pixel size does not matter anymore.
Sensor tech has changed a lot lately.
The issue of "light leaking" to neighbor pixel is almost zero today.
There are Micro4/3 cameras with bigger pixels than FF, but everyone complain how weak they are at night.
The new A7R4 has 61MP, while A7R3 has 42.
The settings matter much more.
Considering the fact cellphones have small sensors, almost all phones can only perform well below iso400.
I checked the crop factor values, the 1/2.6" f1.6 is same of using 1/2.3" f1.7. For same FL.
It is like if you could set f9.6 for FF.
1/1.7" f2.0 will already offer better exposure than 1/2.6" f1.6.
In the end , X1 catches 16% more light than XZ3 ( with same settings), not 42% like Sony Mobile claims.
Company that makes cameras and lenses should not fool people this way.

I agree with hawk in this matter.
Currently the limiting factor for cellphone photography is the sensor size.
A smaller sensor cannot keep up with a much larger sensor. |

Doesn't pixel size affect iso performance? Hence low light shooting? With the same deep trenching bigger pixel should offer cleaner images. Why else 7s would have low mp?

If pixel size doesn't matter then sensor size matters even less.
Hold on a second. You claim Sony lie and yet you have got it right. You better provide some solid evidence and some assumption based calculations.

Tell me why P20 Pro at 40MP (1.0 micron) still beats other phones despite worse software?
Why A7 iii (24MP) outperforms A7s ii (12MP) ?
1" cant beat Micro 4/3".
Micro 4/3 cant beat APSC.
APSC cant beat FF.
FF cant beat Medium Format.
Make a simple test.
XZ2 = iso 200 shutter 0.25s
X1 = iso800 shutter 1/32s.
X1 will lose.
For sure.
Also f1.6 of 1/2.6" and f1.6 of 1/1.7" with same FL do not have same diameter.
Reason why you cant blur background without software tricks no matter if you use 50mm, 80mm or 135mm even with f1.8.

I am replying to let you guys know i am still here watching funny conversation
IMX600 is QuadBayer, meaning it could switch between 2 mode. when it is at QuadBayer Mode, it have 2.0 micron technically
kind of

He says it beats others even when you choose 40mp output. I mean I don't know if it does but it's a huge sensor with a large aperture and ois, p20 pro also have a bw helping sensor right? It wouldn't be surprising if it's also good at high resolution. Not as good as 10mp of course but the pics I remember weren't too good.
So stop watching and say something about the future of Xperia. |

My conclusion is it's more difficult to take a good picture with the Xperia 1 than other flagships but if you know what you're doing, the pictures are amazing. Unfortunately I don't know what I'm doing so I'm forever going to take mediocre pictures until Sony makes a good auto mode to help out dummies like myself. |

"In low light, the Xperia takes overall superior photos in full auto mode. It doesn't have a night mode though, and the Galaxy does, which helps it produce equally good or better results. If you have several seconds to capture the image, that is."

They tied them for good light. Are they lying?
When you look at the samples, aside from hdr Xperia beats it in detail, natural processing (less nr and sharpening, with truer colors) and it has less corner softness. |

What's to over interpret? This clearly means there may be another device coming before the end of the year. |
