Elvis was more popular the world over as were The Beatles. You hear so much of it now cos of tv and internet that way it seems bigger. His Thriller album was the biggest album of all time yes but there were artists who were bigger than him. His last few albums were not as successful. The Beatles and Elvis had far more number ones than Jackson and thats in the UK. Sorry i like some of his music and he was talented but to say its bigger than Elvis or its bigger than anything thats ever happened is a bit of an over statement. I was more upset when John Lennon Freddie Mercury and Princess Diana died but thats just me. Princess Diana that was a massive outpouring of grief but lets not turn it into an argument on who is biggest now they are dead. Just let the man rest in peace for heavens sake. I do think people over react myself when they start falling to their knees on the street as if their whole world has ended cos a singer has died. Stupid. I cried when my mother died i dont cry when a pop star dies whom i dont know personally. That does not mean im some cold hearted person its just thats me and i think people over do it with their crying over a pop star.

Sorry,i disagree. Come to a 3rd world country like SA where the majority are living in EXTREME poverty, ask them who Elvis or The Beatles are and they wont know who the hell you're talking about, ask them about Michael Jackson and i guarantee MOST will be able to quote atleast one song or tell you about his dance moves, same goes to the rest of Africa and MANY MORE countries,im sure India would be the same. Michael Jackson was HUGE. He may not have had as many number ones due to many circumstances, eg. Poverty in many 3rd world countries where he is VERY well known.

I have to say that I agree with all this post.
What I don't like is that the media who exploited him during his life are now exploiting him in death. Paparazzi are scum.

Sorry man, he is bigger than Elvis or The Beatles despite you not fancying his music. If you wanna argue with that then might as well argue with the Guinness Book of World Records.

I do fancy his music and I have 3 of his albums including Thriller and no they weren't bought on iTunes on Friday night.
I also defended him in this thread here.

Yep. He is recognisable all over the world. Elvs was big but not on a worldwide scale like MJ was.
It's sad that he is dead but at least now the media cannot hound his every move. It must have really affected him to have his every move under a microscope. He will live on through his music. Not to mention artists will sample his music and copy his moves trying to emulate him forever.

One thing i could never stand in his singing was his constant hiccups. Between so many words he would sing he would forever do that hiccup sound hated it really annoying. Seems like everyone is worth more as always when dead. Awful.

Leaving aside comparisons with MJ and just concentrating on Elvis, Elvis was huge on a worldwide scale. The only difference is the limitations on the technology prior to 1977, not on the man or the impact he had. Remember this song? It totally overwhelmed the movie it accompanied and that had a star-studded cast as everyone remembers.

@carkitter
Yes, Elvis was indeed big but what has he ever done or contribute to besides his music in or outside of the US? He never fought for any other cause aside from his own. There's nothing wrong in that but there's only so much he can touch without giving back. Not many can relate to him outside of the Western world, media or no media. Michael Jackson was much more than just his music, that's for sure
