Do I want a G900 or an iPhone? |

If Google Maps is the only navigation software available for the iPhone then it's a severe limitation in my opinion. This also means you need a good data plan.

Tom Tom is coming to the App Store, it´s only a matter of time. The app´s been developed already (video on youtube) and an apple executive said they were expecting that kinda app for the store (there´s an interview on engadget.com about this).
The iPhone has always been a smartphone imo, a phone with that richness of OS and advanced hardware could not be called a ´simple phone´, now with the App Store that´s even more clear. There almost 1000 apps available already in just a few days and over 10 million downloads from the App Store. Every company will want their app there. Just imagine the number and variety of apps you´ll have in a couple os months, or in a year. The apps will continue getting better and more complex with time. Think about games too, iphone games have great graphics (dreamcast like) and the developers have only began working on it. The way things are heading, the iphone will become much more of a ´smartphone´ than G900. Add that the iphone´s bigger and better screen, 16gb, great UI and multi-touch and imo u have a clear winner. Multi-touch is highly under appreciated. People tend to see it just as a ´cool´ way of zooming on photos but if you ever tryed scrolling up/down/sideways and zooming on pdf/office files on a phone with a plastic joystic or a stylus (small bars on the sides, another button to zoom) you see that multi-touch makes a huge difference. Not to mention the fact that the iphone can open heavier files and open files faster in general. You can save that sort of file on the iphone using a free app called File Magnet (app store).
The iphone´s big weakness is the camera. It doesn´t do video and it should have more pixels or auto-focus. The camera is good enough for occasional snapping and catching funny moments though. However, it will never be a replacement for a camera like some  and nokia phones can be.
It´s up to you and what u really need/want in a phone. |

As long as are going to be happy not being able to use proper handwriting SW, so having to tap in messages one letter at a time (so I cannot really see the point of the touch screen!) Not being able to swap in a battery when you really need it, having to wait and see if Apple will decide to release proper GPS software (Your main buying indicator) I cant see what the attraction of the IPHONE is apart from being a very pretty if a bit "girlie" phone. Those who speak in its support champion its faster processor it will need one with that OS to run! and HSPDA which is an advantage.
I personally want a device that offers what I want NOW (plenty of on & Offboeard GPS systems available now) and I like to be certain that it will be powered up when I need it, I can live without HSPDA as GPRS is OK as a stand by when 3G is not available.
Ask youself how important is function compared to form and I think you might find just which phone you really need.
I have owned the ... T68i T610, P800, P900, P910, P990, W950, P1, W960 But SE have now totally lost the plot. |

Hmmmm. UIQ3 has plenty of apps available NOW, Tom Tom is only comming to te iPhone once Apple have sorted out the legal side which clearly states no turn by turn GPS apps to launched on the iPhone, G900 has better camera, removable battery, video conferencing camera, full normal keypad, full MMS support, can record video's out of the box, can be used on any network on contract or pay as you go out of the box if brought sim free, supports ad2p, you can buy music of the SE store if I'm right also, I mean you can't even use an iPhone to buy tunes over the 3g network, it ONLY does it over WiFi. Both SE and Nokia have stores set up to allow this. The G900 is also smaller, lighter and far cheaper.
Sorry for ranting, but it winds me up when people suger coat the iPhone and 'forget' the full list of things it CAN'T do. |

Following a Reuters report claiming that GPS manufacturer TomTom plans to sell a navigation application for the iPhone, and the subsequent discovery of a line in the iPhone SDK agreement disallowing “real time route guidance,” a spokesperson from TomTom has come forward to clarify the company’s plans for the device. In an interview with MacGeneration (Translated link), Yann Lafargue of TomTom France revealed that while the company does have a navigation application running on the iPhone, it is unsure of whether or not it will release the software. Lafargue said the company wants to be sure that Apple will allow them to sell the software on the App Store, while stating that the restrictive clause in the SDK agreement is most likely Apple trying to protect itself from a liability standpoint, rather than an outright restriction.

If i were you, i'd go for g900!
I personally purchased a hollux bluetooth GPS adapter (which is awesome btw) and use it with my old Z710 with the Wayfinder Navigator software. As my Z710 is not symbian, I have to stream the map data over GPRS. The maps are detailed enough for walking as well as driving. I find it quite useful and I enjoy the 3D view of the maps. I purchased Wayfinder Navigator last year and at that time, they were still offering the lifetime license so I guess I was lucky.
At that time, they had the ability to predownload maps to install to the device, which would then only use the data connection to update what was already preinstalled. This option was only available for symbian devices, so I was out of luck. However, even over GPRS connections, I had no difficulties with the speed of the map updating as I drove.
I'm in the states and an AT&T customer. I pay $20/month on top of my voice plan for unlimited data. If G900 supported US frequencies I would have purchased it already as it seems to have everything I want and need without going overboard and all at a reasonable price.

And that's the problem isn't it? Apple must have an agreement with Google and it's maps, so are they going to let one of the best satnav programmes to be sold for it's device? Everyone will want it and buy it, but you pee off Google at the same time. I hope they do sell it IMO. |

Seems to me almost any smart phone is an IPHONE killer! Which one did you have in mind

Well I totally disagree with that statement. I made the switch to mac last November, and I have been blown away, I was in I.T. for over 8 years dealing with MS crap every day. You can abuse the MAC OS as much as you want and it just keeps going. Mac sales are increasing faster then any other and will continue to. I know lots of people who have switched. But the hardware is ace, and the OS is just amazing. And yes I can run everything I want to on it, and if you really have to you can run Windows on it.
It's the same with the iPhone, it's selling point is it's OS and interface, I may think the device is a waste of time but I have to admit the interface they made is mind blowing, so simple to use. |

Well, I've decided.
I'm getting an iPhone tomorrow.
I know it has it's short-comings but I think in all, it's an amazing device, and with all the apps that are going to be made for it, there'll be pretty much no end of things you can do with it.
I've realised that the camera and video-recording isn't that important to me, as they're things I don't often use on my current phone anyway and everything else the iPhone has to offer more than makes up for these.
Obviously there are a lot of anti-Mac people out there, but being a Photoshop professional, Mac has been my OS of choice for many years and if I ever have to use a Windozzzze machine, I find it absolutely horrible.
Also, I've been loyal to SE for years, forstly with a Sony flip phone, then the T610, then the K700i and now the W810i, but they're not releasing anything nowdays that makes me go "oohhh", except maybe the G900, but I've read a lot of bad stuff about that one, and it doesn't have GPS.
I try to keep up with the "SE 2008 portfolio" thread on here, but it's just so full of rumour, wrongness and techie nerdiness, I can't be doing with it anymore!
So, iPhone it is! |

@apolloa, personally Apple is not for me because I like to fiddle with the OS and you can't really do that with MacOS and you can get a couple of PCs for the price of a single Mac. I agree that the Apple is very good especially for people engaged in graphics work. I'm not saying that the Apple is not good, on the contrary, it's way ahead of Microsoft based systems, it's just not for my taste.
