i'm not saying that K850 camera is bad but i should be blind to say that is as good (in photos quality) as in Nxx. is this really so hard to accept? not for me. "its all about the camera software..." - no, you're wrong. did you ever found improved (visible) camera quality in previous firmware updates? they can correct a bit in driver but don't expect too much. i spent many months modifying 2MP drivers and... hardware is always most important thing. if hardware is limping then firmware will not help. you can or not agree, this is free world

Youre right about the polarizing thingy, K850's glass lens is not a polarizing or even UV filter one which kills the color vibrance the sensor renders as well as to produce more purple fringe. to sum it up here is what i want for SE to correct for the K850 successor
-Glass Lens cover surface that protects the autolens cover (bring back the more reliable Mechanical shutter)
-Sensor must be a CCD one! given it's size: 1/2.8(even a 1/2.0 Handycam Produces sharper pics than K850 could due to the higher sensitivity in light of a CCD module than CMOS. CMOS just sucks when resolution increases and the size doesn't make any appropriate proportion with the size to resolution ratio
-Design - too prone to breakages especially the back part where there is a tendency to break the speaker grill glass opening. aside from that it also magnets Dust way more than a regular matte finished one: reason for this? Glass surface is static prone
-Keys - must be like W890 at least, novice buyers wont appreciate the smalle keys at first glance even though it's not what they really expects.
-Replace JP-8 Platform with UIQ 3.1 - yeah JP-8 is nice but given by it's rank as High-End and Flagship cam phone(Walkman's current Flagship is a smartphone btw) it's competitors i.e. N82 and N958G powered by S60, i think utilizing a UIQ platform in a High-End phone like this is a must UIQ provides more flexibility as well as power for media applications which K850 is meant for UIQ can make more possibilities for it's Orientation Sensor to be utilized for Main Menu autorotate as well

- WiFi (p3).
josesoto14 (p4)
for me..the wi-fi support and uiq3 firmware would make it better

-Replace JP-8 Platform with UIQ 3.1 - yeah JP-8 is nice but given by it's rank as High-End and Flagship cam phone
WOW 3 pages and 3 requests for WiFi and or UIQ3.x. Noice.
Razec ... great idea but I do NOT wish to loose SE's legendary support for Java. Keep it to augment UIQ3.x application base for us the END user.

What i really mean was that K850 or it's successor should now utilize both JP-8 and UIQ 3.1 in one - remember that the amount of Java APIs present in S60 3.2 is almost the same as the JP-8s(except the OpenGL ES 1.1 and Accelerometer API). nonetheless S60 can also be considered as a JP-8 S60 in one
WiFi is also a very good inclusion for the K850 successor. I remember that Digicams of this generation have built in WiFi for easy sharing Pictures/Videos from the device to another one. not to mention Sony G1 and Koda's V610(can't remembetr the exact Kodak model featuring WiFi )

First of all i would like to say i owned a k850i for a week but sold it because of financial reasons; however in the short time i owned this beauty i discoverd 3 major issues.
If sonyericsson delivered the phone the way they said they would this phone would easily be one of the best non symbian phones on the market.
1st issue CAMERA:
Although the majority of my pictures taken with this phone were worthy of comparison to my 5MP digital camera, there were a selected few which appeared very dark. I later discovered a firmware upgrade removed this from happening.
2nd issue FINGER PRINTS:
I love this black gloss finish on the phone, it reminds me of the ipod touch which too looks fantastic. Despite its exceptional looks, FINGERPRINTS! I found my self having to carry a cloth along with my k850i because the damn finger marks made it looks greasy and dirty. I thought this phone was supposed to reduce the needless accessories that i carry seeing how it is an all in 1 device.
On the upside it does bring a feel of richness and class when comparing to phones such as the k750i. Dont get me wrong i love my k750i but it hasnt got the same lovely finishing its younger brother has, it feels cheap in comparison. There in the same style of league... but i guess i could use that too the k750i's advantage.. "better build quality".
3rd Issue MEDIA PLAYER:
This was proberly the biggest issue amongst all other problems!! Now when i first purchased my k750i i had a 3rd gen ipod which i Eaaasily disowned dayss later of using the k750i. The quality was something to be proud off. There are still some today who argue there ipods output is louder better... but after listening through my shure e4gs tweaking the equaliser the sound jus blew me away. It was crisp, loud and delivered all the correct sound. The same is for my w810i which jus has a slightly nicer walkman interface lol. But when it came to the new upcoming models such as the k800i/k810i.. the sound quality jus hit rock bottom. It is simply awful, which is most proberly the main reason i havent upgraded to one.
Then the k850i arrived and you can guess what i went to first... the media player. It all looked soo pretty but in actual fact it was just a cover up for the same lame excuse for a noise i was hearing in the k800i.
For me, if this sound quality issue was resolved i would deffiently upgrade but when such a major problem occurs and my 2/3 year old phones out perform a so called ''upgrade'' you know there is something deffiently wrong here. Oh yeah the media player would also discard my equaliser settings each time i would listen to music again. So i would have to redo my eqauliser settings every time i wanted to listen to songs again... gets a bit boring after a while.
On the positive side it felt good having the latest phone and everyone wanting to see it... it has exceptionally eye catching looks, an awesome camera when performing correctly and a quality interface.
The inbox capacity in the messages was alot higher than what i got now, and when using a usb cable to transfer data it was like the old k750i where the phone remained active, non of this nonsense which i see on my w810i ''please do not dissconnect''... lol
The screen and everything was also of the highest quality. All in all if the sound quality issue was considered and taken care off i would most likely purchase this phone as it seems to be another great from sonyericsson.

ill tell you what would make the k850i better...a great nice big healthy update like the n95 recently got, the n95 is now much faster, has more ram (the n95-1 this is) its got added features and no keypress bug making it faster and more responsive.
i know this is a strictly non n95 thread but i would like to state to everyone (because i am new here on esato and have not had my say about the n95 vs k850 battle) i think the n95 is a better phone and always has been, this update simply makes it the phone it should have been on release, much quicker and much less buggy, in fact non i have experienced so far since the v20 update. the camera was the strong debate and i think its down to preference, some pictures have better results on both phones. but as a all round phone the older n95 has always had more potential and the updates it is receiving are simply getting better and better performance wise. still not as super smooth or user friendly as the k850 but very close now and with some outstanding features the non-smart phone k850 will never have.
ive never had a crash with my nokia since the v20 update and for this reason im using it more over my k850i, plus i have a 1400mah li-polymer battery i purchased making it need a charge no less than every 3 days easy.
now!!...back to the discussion...do forgive my simply biased-ish opening to my message, the k850 is amazing but not without its problems. the main ones from the off being the button design, its awkward and you all know it. the body is a fingerprint magnet also. but internally i just think the whole system could do with a overdue update to help things run smoother and nicer, although its pretty darn good anyway!!
again sorry all (including you moderators!) about mentioning my views on the battle but i did not get my chance to put the opinion out on the n95 vs k850 threads due to only just signing up. i urge you all to hold in your feelings about the battle of the 5mp's to save the thread from being killed by arguements i just wanted to get out what i thought. |

Jinx, can you check how much memory is available now, when the phone is in idle? You can check it with an app RAM booster. Here's the link, please let me know:

This was a major drawback on N95 that iritated me, painfully.. Thanx! |

Seriously, if you want 8GB and wifi get the Nokia N95 8GB.
SE K series phones don't run off an OS and that's why they can't utilize WLAN. It also benefits the battery life.
As for the 8GB, get a memory card? Not hard.
I currently own a Nokia N95 8GB after dumping the K850i and I can honestly say it has its drawbacks, but not as many as the K850i.
The screen of the N95 8GB is COMPLETELY WASHED OUT, it's unbearable. Comparing the colours to my S-IPS LCD and another high quality LCD from my Toshiba 810T, the colours on the N95 look really, really bland.
What the N95 8GB does well is everything else. Only gripe I have with the phone is the screen quality.
lol anyways, I think my post is going to spark off topic comments, so hmm, I think what would make the K850i better is a matte surface similar to the N95 rather than a crappy glossy feel. During the period I owned the K850i, it was like I was carrying around and oil stick. So greasy!
