@DragonEye, that really wasn't the point of my post.

I was trying to give my initial experience in comparison to the points you had found but it also occurred while writing that, that its not just SE that have problems with initial release and though I haven't had a Nokia for years apart from a brief 8800 trial, I can see now that its not just SE that has these issues

my other fav, windows mobile. also have their problems at release which rely on firmware updates to sort them

the conclusion seems to be that we should choose our products based not only on features as they appear on paper, but how quickly issues are resolved after release and I feel that SE still have something to learn in that respect... but thats a whole other topic

for the N95. I am trying to work it hard and despite its initial few failings, its living up to its side of the bargain for the most part IMHO

Hi Masseur,

I was interested on your findings of the GPS and will be interested to see if this improves although to be honest due to where the chip is located and the fact it is a Sirf11 chip i some how doubt it. This is why i have said i prefer a stand alone solution for GPS and just the Sat Nav software on my device.

I also think we all accept partly owing to the complexity of these new devices none seem be launched bug free to be honest i still find this hard to accept from any manufacturer as IMO it should not be released until ready.
Although recent history does go in Nokia's favor as to releasing new firmware and resolving issues quite quickly plus usually you get change log telling us what has been addressed.

well, I'm prepared to give this device a chance rather than dismiss it from the start... so lets see

I never depend on one device so for me this is as much an experiment as it is trialling alternative solutions as it is having a bit of fun

GPS can take 20 minutes to upload
I have been getting my signal lock in 2-5min. So I was a bit surprise about people only getting lock in 20min. Just a note I am using the "Asia Map" instead of the default "Map". Not sure whether this maybe the reason.

When setting up GPS you have to purchase the license and you can select to do this from the phone and pay via premium sms or credit card.

In asia, there is another map prog in addition to "Map". It is called "Asia Map". 2 maps are loaded in the phone and additional maps are available in a provided CD. When I first started this "Asia Map", it just send a normal sms to register the app. No prompting etc etc. So I think setup maybe different from region to region.

• GPS is slow compared to Tom Tom.

Have not used tom-tom. Speed is acceptable. Once you got a lock on GPS, the position is shown on map quite fast. Transitioning from map slice to another is quite fast. However, I have not travel long distance when many slices of map are loaded into memory.

Eg when using radio dj on fully charged battery it will last 45mins.

I used wifi for 1hr and I am still on full bar. I think it may be the battery meter not detecting battery properly. I had once the meter just fell from full to 3 bars in few minutes. When I restarted the phone, it was back at full. No sure this is due to new battery not conditioned properly.

There is an issue with stability on this phone and may crash few times a week this is is normal

I suspect this may be branding issue. My unbranded one has not crash once (i.e. you need to pull battery out) in the 6days I have it. The only time it self-rebooted is when I started the LifeBlog app for the very first time. And I have playing with the phone A LOT!!.

Hard wear design fault the stereo headset jack connector makes a hissing noise in your ear when music turned up

Didnt experience this. I am using my own headset. I'll try the Nokia headset to see whether it is headset problem. Any chance this is due to jack not securely inserted?

- The only bug I detected is the "multimedia" key stopped working after running certain app (not sure which one yet). I think this wont bother many people as the "multimedia" menu is show when slide the phone to player mode.

You know Mib, I find it a bit funny, most people who complain about the N95, never owned one in the first place! After reading N95 treads at: MR, PRODIG, SF (well known cell forums) - I come to the conclusion, the N95's launch went better then the WM5/6 (not to mention the - even today - buggy P990i). I only hope that Nokia will be able to supply the world market with this 'marvel' so that the price wil drop soon enough for me to get one

@mario

I think N95 generate a lot of envy among rival fans and this leads to some poison pen. I think it would be good that real owners of N95 speak up to dispel all the inaccuracies.

I reckon N95 would be a big hit given the problem-free launch. So far those who buy it for real have come out in praise of it. I think Nokia would boost production given the good initial feedback. And price will certainly fall. Even the launch price of 550euro (which is the price I bought) is very reasonable (unlike some other recent high end prices)

edit: I tried with Nokia headset and there is no hissing sound.

every1 would agree that a dedicate gps is better just like a dedicate cam. But then you have to carry around all these devices. I think the gps on N95 is good enough for casual use.

You cannot expect an AIO device to excel in every area. If the AIO can match 70% capability of dedicated device, I think that is more than good enough.

@mib1800, did you not read the list of issues posted by DragonEye? I'd hardly call that a problem free launch

I've had mine 24 hours now and while, in general, I am pleased with the device, it is definitly in need of quite a few fixes.

another issue I found is that if I have set photos to be stored on the memory card, and the memory card fills up, then the camera app won't start! It doesn't give you an option to use internal memory at this point, it just doesn't start. so you must then delete something from the memory card so the camera can work again and then you can change to the internal memory if you want

I was also getting a warning about a near full memory card when starting the phone but I didn't much care because all I have on there is music to play, and the odd photo I have taken

So I assume the phone wants to use the storage card for various other things aswell and its not just for me to store music

it is definitly in need of quite a few fixes

All devices need fixes even stable ones. Not all the bugs affect everyone. The main thing is all major functions of N95 are working at a acceptable standard (i.e not crashing left and right or in need of "restart to improve performance").

Even if you ran out of RAM (when multi-task), the phone dont crash or require restart. And low on RAM is not a bug but a design flaw. btw: have you notice that N95 dont slow down even if you are low on RAM like some previous symbian?

If you dont consider this problem free, I dont know what is. Even some "successful" non-smartphone have more problems.

I don't disagree at all, this is definitly more stable than my M600 and P990 were when first bought, but given the number of issues I think its a bit much to claim a successful launch.

I've had 3 restarts now when I was in the middle of doing something and the GPS definitly has issues, especially as I mentioned before, when trying to plan a route starting at the "GPS location"

I expect that most of these will be cleared up quickly and in the meantime, as you say, most of the major functions seem to be mostly working

btw, I must have scanned 20 bar codes and not one has worked yet. not even sure why I would want to do that anyway but its there and so I just have to give it a go!

Currently I am playing with the 3d tones...

Maybe I'll give the original nokia "Map" a try. First I have to download maps which takes time. I currently used the bundled Asia Maps which is a 3rd party nav (by a company called Agis) without any problem.

---

Just a quick question for those who have used 3rd Edition. on N95, in main menu, you'll see a small blue circle above the folder icon if folder has active app opened. Is this a new thing?
