I've just found the datasheet for a LCD's controller which drives 101x80 with 256 colors. It's from NEC, and is named UPD161401.
http://www.ic.nec.co.jp/nesdis/image/S15726EJ2V0DS00.pdf
(647 Kbytes ahead!)
If this is the one on T68, then we can say bye bye to getting more than 256 colors
Cytech, can you confirm if this IC it's on the T68's board? I can't open mine without voiding the warranty, and it's just two months old. The chip should be near the LCD screen...
@celios, you're partially right; on the PCs you can trade color depth for resolution, but the video card must support the color depth... I'd got a very very old Trident card which had 2 MBytes of Video RAM but couldn't get more than 24 bits of color depth, altought it had enough memory to support 640x480x32 bits. The same applies (I guess) to T68, theorically with the same Video RAM you could take the resolution down to 101x40 and the you should had space for 65536 colors! But, on reality, the LCD's controller won't drive so many colors because the signals sent to LCD are electronically limited to a much lower discreet values... It's like trying to get my old Trident card to set a 32 bits color depth: there is just no way.
I also must note that Video RAM it's very expensive, and very power hungry (all its contents must be readed many times a second!), so it's logical to use the lesser the best: perhaps this is why P800 just have 4096 colors instead of 65536 (99840 bytes of Video RAM vs 133120). Other limiting factor should be the LCD screen itself, just some of them can't handle so much colors although the controller send them correctly. If you were a engineer and could save 34Kbytes of a very expensive and power consuming memory without any appreciate loss of quality what would you do?
If anyone thinks I'm talking too much, just say it and I'll shut up!

so than if all this is true that would mean that new phones with 4096 colors have the same lcd hardware wise but a different processor? if that is true, it mens that if you finda compatible color processor, you could probably solder it to your t68i and get something like the 3g phone 262k or whatever.... i mean theoretically it is possible than, because there are defiantely people who are knowledgeble enough to perform such a "surgery", if i knew how to do it that would be cool... anyway, thanx for the info, it was very eye oppening....

well, not exactly... you should also reprogram the firmware to get the new screen working: a color is not represented the same way in 256 colors mode and in 65536 colors modes... It would require a way more changes in the firmware that is willing to do right now... that's pretty sure. |

okay, got it, it would be cool if the t68i had a possibility of the hardware upgrade... thanx anyway...

Are we trying to ask too much from sony ericsson??? Since SE has always been released new firmware upgrade which introduce some new features in most upgrade besides bug fix........We should praise them for bringing us new features in firmware upgrade...........as for Nokia, if they add a new features for the phone, they probably make a new model with a slight new features,,,,,,,,,and call it a new phone and rip you guys off............We are asking too much for T68i.............Its very best the way it is now...............we should demaning the new features in the upcoming T68i successor !!!!!! |

Thats cool to wait for the new model and get all the new features in that one. However I think the problem everyone has with that is the fact that SE takes sooooooooooooooooooooooooo long to launch a new product that we rather just have a FW upgrade and take what we can get. Thats my take on it. I mean if we knew for sure a T68 sucessor was coming ...say..... Feb 1, I am sure noone would have a problem with that. But we dont know and even if they release a date, you can never be sure if the phone will really be released that date and not puched back 3 or 4 times. Thats how I see it.

C'mon guys, just seat back & relax. In 2000 we all think that color screens and camera is science fiction. I thought that my Z5 was state of the art & science. |

Yes, sometimes we do ask too much of SE... for now..I'll be happy with 2 things..
1.) RELEASE THE DAMN P800
2.) PLEASE make it in another color besides baby blue! (silver would be really nice and neutral) |

It would be the best thing if the T68i gets a 4096 color screen.
Can't we give SE a list of changes for the t68i?? They could do that for their customers or??? Their must be a way to change LCD!!
I cant wait till April for the new T68i successor. When I see a Samsung or the GD 87, than I think for a minute to sell my T68i but I can't do. I love my T68i.
I only want 4096 colors!!! |

well.. i remember when the t65 came, not a word until 1 or 2 month before it came, thats what they should do with every phone they make. Not to say - "and here is our new phone, but you will have to wait 6-10 month until u get it". |

jplacson > The P-800 is not baby-blue,..its actually silver metallic and steelblue I got a quite good look at it in Amsterdam this spring
But as usual with SE-phones on press-pictures : they look aweful
In real life they are quite different,..and the P-800 is a lot better looking in real life, trust me
