I am also the one who dissatisfied with the sound quality. I previously own K750 and i expect the same warm clear output from K800.

I think i expect too much because the quality is actually worse compared to K750. Dynamic is low, max volume is not as loud as K750, and stereo widening even made the sound muffled and crappy.

I used HPM-70 and tried diffrerent headphones from Sony. All the same AAC tracks (m4a). Original headset sound better than HPM-70, but in a sense that 'is not that worse' compare with HPM-70.

I post a while a go about similar topic here.
http://www.esato.com/board/viewtopic.php?topic=130564#post1765259

I have the same experience with the topic maker, some people agree that K800 sound is crappy, others believe that i am actually the one who 'crappy'.

There is actually a hypothesis workaround to overcome this limitation without firmware upgrade. It is to use HBH-DS970 Stereo Bluetooth Headset which utilize Bluetooth A2DP Service within K800. In my understanding K800 should made standard 'line output' sound and not the amplified one through BT A2DP. So HBH-DS970 should use their own amplifier and the result should be independence from K800. But i have not tested this yet because HBH-DS970 is still expensive in my areas.

About crippled sound quality, actually Sony is very very capable of doing this. Similar to what happened with most of its Walkman Personal Audio lines especially Network Walkman ones (Walkman that use Hard Drive or Flash Memory circuit).

Most Sony Walkman have "Sound Pressure" mode activated. It limits the output not more than 100 dB. It is to meet some European regulations. Sound quality is worsened. Dynamics is lower. Similar experience with this K800 to K750 situatuons. It plaqued most Walkman Series : A Series, E Series, HD Series etc.

Please noted that this is different than AVLS. Sony gives AVLS in their standard menu and it is not the same as SP setting in their 'Service' menu.

I own Aura A1000 8 GB Network Walkman, and it suffer the same crappy sound. Only when i deactivate SP Mode the sound gain its strength and dynamics.
You can see some discussion about this in here :
http://www.atraclife.com/forums/index.php?showtopic=509

Sony Ericsson might doing this sound limitation to stand their Walkman phones series against K800. What i am trying to say is technically they're capable of doing this limitation for any given reason.

Oh FYI, the output from Sony Walkman audio device and Sony Ericsson Walkman phones is very different. The one come from SE it is not the 'same old Sony' sound. None of SE phones support Sony's proprietary Atrac formats, which for me, sound better than AAC.

Not even the W series had that option, and you expect the K series to have it?

I agree with you and be sure you are not 'crappy'.I really hope SE will fix this problem because camera and music are most important for a multimedia phone and I want back that great music player(quality and volume) from k750.If the volume is too low is not a problem(you can adjust your volume) but if it`s too slow what can you do??I sent SE some mails regarding this problem but they didn`t reply.

this is the main reason of no dynamics on K800 the use of compression on the sound SE please take that out or maybe some one can do a little program for us to change this in our K800? like we do with our iPods in Europe.

Pls someone help me:
Even if I updated my software from SEUS my k800`s volume(using hpm-70) is too slow compared with k750/w800/w810.
What earpiece I could buy to increase volume and make my k800 sound like w800.

Is the sound volume/quality still bad on the K800?

I think there is a new firmware out now. I´m thinking about getting a K800...and i was thinking about getting Nokia N73(quadband and much more to play with than the K800) but i think i have to admit that K800 is the better one, camerawise.

I currently own a w800 with the first firmware(no hissing suond there) and i am wery satisfied with it. But, as many others, i want a better camera...but i´m worried about that tha m3-player will be much worse on the K800. Hmmm.

The sound quality of the k800/k790 has been crippled by SE - it has low volume compared to even the k750i and absence of distict bass elements making it sound like an old nokia 6630 .This is purely a firmware issue as i see it because the test firmware had excellent sound quality. Let us all send a petition to SE requesting on an emergency firmware update .

Please comply as we need a joint effort to make it work.

i agree.. i was surprised when my friend showed me his w800 and when he played his mp3, it was 2x louder than my k800! even 3x louder i think...

well maybe its really the fermware problem.

how to make a petition btw?

regarding the megabass, k750 is not a walkman phone but it also has the megabass feature FYI

I totally agree with you.Sound on k800 sucks( compared with k750/w800/w810).
I`m very disappointed about k800`s music player volume.
I really hope SE will fix this problem.I think all of us should write about this to SE.I did but Se didn`t answer me back.
((
k750/w800/w810 are much better than k800 on music.

There are 2 new software updates and SE didn`t improve k800`s sound.
I`m very disappointed beacause I really like k800 except music player which is very slow even if you use hpm70.between k750,w800,w810,w900-k800 is by far the worst.
What could I do to improve k800`s sound????? or should I sell it

i don't find the k800i's sound quality to be worse than the k750i's...quite the opposite infact...my k750i'ssound was tinny, even after numerous firmware updates...
