I find this very hard to believe, as this most certainly would have come to my attention, and I have yet to see anything about it on my desk. The first phones produced are never released and you can identify from the back label, if it's a phone manufactured for commercial sale it will say "type yadayadaydada", if not it says "Prototype" and/or "Not type approved".
If this did indeed happen as you said, please e-mail me the IMEI number of the faulty-phone as i would like to look into it further.

fake batteries overheating and destroying phones is certainly a fact; it happens. That's why oem's hate aftermarket batteries and often won't warranty the phone with them in it.
Yeah the story probably is a hoax in this instance, but I have heard from a few reliable sources of phones "exploding" (heating up and plastic melting) due to dodgy batts. I have also heard of phones bought from a store new with an aftermarket battery supplied instead of the original. I know of a few retailers myself who I wouldn't put it past them to do such a thing.
However not all aftermarket batteries are dodgy, most are probably perfectly ok. I doubt I'd use one myself though.... |

If it were true, and you werent an idiot. You'd refuse all the freebies, and take it to court, and take their settlement of 10,000 or more.
