Yes, WhiteMagic is amazing. The Xperia P's screen is superb. It's "only" qHD, and 4". But I'd love to see a 1080p+, 5"+ screen with the tech!
I've never seen an IGZO in real life, but people describe it as amazing. And power saving like the WM.
What happened to Crystal LED btw? Under development? |

Last tidbits we got on CLED were from around CES. Basically it seems that commercializing it is pretty difficult as it's quite expensive. Sony seems to think it might have potential either in the professional market (where they can charge $20k for a 25" display and no one bats an eye), or in ultra large sizes (professional public installations?).
Now of course that could all just be a bunch of BS. This year Sony is pushing 4K hard, and unless they could get CLED to handle 4k resolutions in reasonable sizes, it would likely cripple their efforts to push 4k. For example, on the one hand you have this 4k LED TV with very sharp images and, on the other hand you have this 1080p CLED TV with far superior motion, colours and black levels. It kinda sends a contradictory message. It's just wild speculation on my part of course, but it might be reason enough to push CLED out of the limelight while they improve the tech.
They did of course demo a 4k OLED display at CES. We know Sony and Panasonic are working together to design next gen OLED panels and I've heard that they might be utilizing other companies for the actual manufacturing (AUO?). So between 1080p LED, 4K LED, 1080p OLED, 4k OLED and the prospect of CLED, they seem to have a lot on their plate. Plus of course there's now the whole factor of quantum dots. Sony are the first company to use this tech in TVs, even if it is only as a colour filter to provide a richer palette and more true to life colours. Quantum dots on their own can be a display technology, and some seem to believe it's the next step after OLED. Who knows if/when we may ever see a QLED TV, but if we do I imagine it'll be fracking spectacular. |

Small correction:
It's Sony and AUO that are working on next gen OLED panels, Panasonic is only a "secondary partner" and has no contribution in development. |

Wouldn't it be awesome if instead of going with a CLED HDTV first, they produced a CLED screen first for the 2014-2015 Xperia flagship? A smartphone flagship would actually be mass produced, thus driving prices of the CLED down, unlike a CLED HDTV which would be a niche product at first. The Xperia flagship would be one of a kind.
I guess the problem is not really mass production, but actual technical feasibility. But it'd be nice if Sony is working on it.
Imagine a bezel-less phone, only a small bar at the top and bottom for earpiece and speakers. The camera and sensors are behind the CLED panel and glass (something Sony has patented recently). All in a svelte 6mm thick, water and dust resistant form factor. I'm drooling at the thought

So they're providing what, funding? Technical know-how? Patents?
As for CLED on Xperias, the problem is shrinking the technology down. When CLED was first shown, I recall people on various display forums going apeshit over the relatively tiny size of the LEDs and the technological challanges on just a 1080p 55" display. I don't know the ins and outs of how difficult this is myself, but assuming they had a valid point, I can only imagine how much harder it is to develop individual LEDs small enough to get pixel densities to rival LCD and OLED displays on smartphones.
Anyways, I hope Ambroos posts soon. I'm curious to know if todays Unity announcement is what he was talking about, or if there's still another OS or app ecosystem on its way. Even if it is the Unity announcement, from what I can gather so far this is still pretty big news. Apparently it far exceeds PSM and its SDK in terms of allowing iOS and Android devs to port their games over to the Playstation environment, and this stuff will be available on all Playstation devices, and also on PSM. To be honest this is what I thought PSM would have originally been. Good to see further progress is being made along these lines. |

Funding. Basically they get their hands on the final panels. That's about it. Panasonic has no OLED know how or patents AFAIK

Sony Mobile to launch handsets with MediaTek chips?
Digitimes is reporting that MediaTek has landed orders for its chips from around 20 companies including Sony Mobile. The report says that these companies will look to roll out devices based on its quad-core MT6589 solution during March/April. Now this is quite a broad statement, so don’t expect all companies to release devices as early as that.
All 2013 Xperia models announced to date run on the Qualcomm Snapdragon chipset, but there is a possibility it could be planning on releasing new models with the budget MediaTek chip later in the year.

Yes, have patience folks. It's not as if I'm hiding info. If I had any info on C670X I would certainly have posted. As yet I have no info on C670X specs. |
