now that I think of it they are not that much bigger than those iomega click drives I used to use with 40gb each that I could write to by inserting them into a PCMCIA adaptor
they were great in their day

Sony may open up PSP UMD format
Sony might take a big step and do something smart: allow other manufacturers to use the PlayStation Portable’s Universal Media Disc (UMD) in their own devices. Other companies would not be able to play PSP games on their machines—that will be exclusive to the PSP, of course—but obviously Sony thinks they have a shot at making the UMD a popular format for music and videos on portable devices.
They’d be opening up the format to potential piracy (since they’d inevitably have less control over the discs’ use, as well as their manufacture and distribution), but loosening the reins is really the only way they’re going to put the “universal” in “Universal Media Disc,” right? If they really want to impress they’d take the next logical step and sell UMD recorders that would let consumers burn their own movies, music, and yes, even games to the discs.

SCE Opens UMD Format
Hopes dedicated UMD players will help push new format.
If there's one thing missing from the current PSP lineup in Japan, it's original music and movie content on the UMD format. While the system offers plenty of multimedia functionality through Memory Stick, the UMD demo disk included with some PSP units provided such an excellent sampling of video and audio playback that we'd like to see more.
And we may just be getting more thanks to a new openness on Sony Computer Entertainment's part. SCE president Ken Kutaragi revealed today that SCE plans to make the technology behind the movie and music playback of the UMD format open to other hardware makers. Kutaragi hopes that this will encourage hardware manufacturers to make UMD-compatible media players that will allow UMD owners to play back their disks separate from the PSP.
Game content is not included in this opening of the format. Hoping to keep other companies from making game machines that compete with the PSP, SCE will be keeping the game side of the UMD closed off from free access. The PSP will be the only place to play PSP games, according to Kutaragi.
The opening of the UMD format clears one hurdle in the way of making the tiny disks a big thing outside of the gaming world. The next hurdle will likely be cleared once major studios start announcing content. Currently, only Bandai and Sony have announced non-game content for the UMD.

A Final Fantasy VII movie is available on UMD in Japan isn't it?
It will be good if the UMD really takes off but I'm not so sure it will replace CD or DVD. MiniDisc never really got going.
I was myself considering the possibility or even probability of a UMD writer, also UMD-RWs would be really useful!

Afternoon all,
I should shortly be joining your exclusive club, thanks (very very much!) to themarques! My PSP is currently en route to the depot, if Parcelforce are to be believed (...but why break the habit of a lifetime!)
My first question, and I have no doubt that there will be many more, is what is the likelihood that I will have to pay some form of import duty/VAT and, if so, how much is this likely to be?
I'm almost positive that this has been discussed earlier in this thread, but I have not yet had the opportunity to read the whole thing (it will be done).
Your experiences on this not particularly exciting of subjects...?

45 squid?!!! Wasn't expecting that much - guess I probably should have been though. So that's about 17.5% of the value plus a bit for handling etc....
Oh well - still worth it, judging by the enthusiasm I see around here. And for not having to wait till June!
