Being a new market by it self is hard for the struggling Sony, and going down to 6" will make it very close to the Z4's 5.5" which is already a phablet by it self...
I believe if Sony cancelled or postponed next Ultra then it's because of it's recent change in marketing by going for fewer devices to maintain and worry about.
but that's if, Sony might actually still planning this device but the recent changes made them reschedule some planned devices and cancel others... but seeing some leaks pointing to the non-existence of Z3X, not to mention the strange naming which seems to be old now as we're closing forward to Z4 launch after 3-4 months...
They stated that the premium handsets will get more attention. So compact and flagship only? By the way, 0.5 inches is a very large amount.

How many units did the Z Ultra sell?
Did the revenue generated account for the costs associated with R&D and manufacturing?
Was it profitable?
If the answer to this is yes, then a successor may be viable. If no, then there is little point.
Simple economics. |

Well making a successor is much cheaper than making it the first time. By the way using the same hardware will keep the costs to minimum. Well I like my Z Ultra but Sony will keep losing since the highend phablet territory belongs to Android and Sony is not in it. God help them. Lol. |

Re: a 6 inch Ultra being too close to the 5.5 inch Z4, I disagree. Remember, screen area is a quadratic function of screen diagonal, which means the bigger the display, the bigger the difference each 1" increment in diagonal makes. So even though 6 inches is "only" 0.5 inches bigger than 5.5, the screen actually has 19% more area. I think that's enough for a separate model. If you wanted a little more separation between the two, you could go 6.1," and you could still make it much smaller than the original Ultra. |

Sony should also work on shrinking the bezels too and thickness, that can differentiate the 2 products. But I think if they do make a new Z ultra they should definitely got 6.2". |

I can understand the need for smaller bezels but to reduce the thickness of a phone would only result in smaller battery capacity and potentially a smaller camera sensor, that's why the Z range of lately has large top and bottom bezels as the sensor is not behind the screen but in the very top corner so rather than making a bump or making the phone to thick they just made it taller. Thickness on a phone has never bothered me personally if an extra mm or two adds a few more hundred mAh to a battery then I'm all for that.
I'm so happy 'cause today I've found my friends ... They're in my head

I am also ok with the bezels since it keeps the phone slim. Also with larger displays landscape mode is more ergonomic that way. Side bezels may be reduced. Again I hope Sony makes the phablet sometime mid year because I really love the slim omnibalance design. Cheers. |

I don't know if it is new tech or not, but I saw a slide from a Sony presentation the other day which showed a lens off-set from the sensor and the incoming light being reflected 90ยบ twice to increase the distance between the lens and the sensor.
The tech effectively means larger lenses can still make thin camera modules.
I'll see if I can dig it out...

Z4 is probably known specifications. CPU 8994, sensor 2070! 1080P.5.2 inch display is the international version! US version of the display is QHD! IP6 / 8! |

Same size and resolution screen and camera. only the CPU gets a significant upgrade.

Hmm why Z3/Z4 tablet has more known specs than Z4 itself?

I have no problems with the size being the same, I don't need a 5.5 inch device. 1080P is fine, will def help in the battery department as well.
What worries me is the sensor, if it remains the same unit. |
