windows mobile phones are usually updated by a single executable that you download from the support site. I expect SE will provide these direct from the X1 support pages.

its dead easy to do it, just run the program you downloaded and it prompts you for everything. I've been updating WM phones, and pocket pc device before that using the same method, and never bricked on yet

if you start using customised firmware (as found on xda developers site), you might have issues but these days they take great care and do alot of testing

Hi all,

Well it's been a while with the X1 now and i must say it really is a very good device indeed and one of the best from SE for quite a while IMO.

I do have quite a few things I'm just not very happy with the first being that the volume on the Music player is not really loud enough as although it's OK inside I'm not sure what it will be like when out and about.

The second thing is even though i have selected the largest fonts size available it is still quite small.

The device on the whole reacts very well and really it is only the panels that have a slight delay whilst they refresh which brings me to what i think is my first bug. Although i have changed what the left and right button shortcuts activate and they do what i have assigned to them. They still show what they were originally assigned to in the panel and have not and appear will not change to show what they should be anyone else seen this?

My last problem i would appreciate some advice on as i am running Vista i no longer need Active Sync but have to use Windows Mobile Device Centre and it works very well for Syncing my Calender and Contacts and would also sync my E-Mail, Music, Videos, Pictures and files if i wanted it to. But i can't see any way of moving my downloaded apps to my device any suggestions would be welcome.

As much as i am impressed with the build quality and stability of the X1 I'm really not sure if it's the right device for me or not. That is not saying there is anything wrong with it as nothing could be further from the truth just that i don't like the font size and am slightly concerned by the lack of Volume in the Music player although the quality of sound is very good indeed. Well i am going to give it a few more days before i reach my final decision and see if i can find a way to install apps easily or not.

Hi masseur,

I am wondering about this and yes, I need to research more.

I guess this is tHe same for the X1! For my TyTn II, I downloaded

RUU_Kaiser_HTC_WWE_3.28.405.0_radio_sign_25.83.40.02_1.65.17.56_Ship.exe

but never bother to install it. I can see the pdf with it that says what the improvements are.

So I guess, I make a back up of my programs on the TyTn II using Sprite,

then run this executable from HTC, with my TyTn II plugged in to the USB cable, and then sit back.

I wonder then if I restore using Sprite, whether it will put back Exchange server, address book, tom tom etc.

Basically, is this correct?

@Dogmann

there seem to be 2 volume controls. The phone volume and the media player volume; the phone volume seems to amplify the media player volume.

PS - my black X1 is better build quality then my silver which a slight squeak on the back lower half. So hopefully I can return the silver in exchnage for a G1

Try Jah's suggestion (make sure both volume sliders are turned up fully).

However this may be an SE thing. A while ago, when music phones first started (around about the K700 era I think), Music phones got some bad press in Europe for having loud volume that could damage hearing, especially of young people whose hearing could be permanently damaged. Ever since they've had this policy of making sure the volume can't accidently do permanent damage to people's hearing.

The old "protect people from themselves" malarky. It really irritates me that they pander to this sort of thinking. Some other phone oem's have similiar policies but SE seem to be more sensitive than most about it.

It's equally irritating that people think it's okay to sue an OEM for damaging their hearing when it was they themselves (not the OEM) who turned the volume up too loud. It should be a person's choice. Besides I think SE could raise the volume just a little and still be within reasonable safe limits.

So I'm wondering if SE have put this volume limit as part of their usually policy of restricting the upper volume to "safe" levels?

It's disappointing. I usually find the volume level okay, but occasionally in a noisy environment, even with the excellent sound isolation of the HPM70 ear buds, the volume is not quite strong enough.

Unfortunately Sprite doesn't really work too well with ROM upgrades - the restore usually fails going from a 6.0 to 6.1 backup, or worse, leaves you with corrupted new install. You're really better off just saving your files normally, and restoring everything manually from a clean sheet.

Hi all,

Actually i had noticed noticed the device and phone volume sliders and by moving both of them to one off maximum it has indeed greatly improved the volume. So that is one of the problems solved, i would still like larger font's but am slowly getting used to it.

I have also now solved the not being able to install apps to the X1 problem as hadn't realised i just need to run set up and then the next time i connect the X1 it installs it from my laptop straight to the X1 doh!

@Jah

I much prefer all Black phones and must say the build quality really is very good on the X1 indeed no compliants from me on this at all.

Ive just bought my XPERIA X1 from CLOVE.CO.UK, so hoppefully theyll contact me tomorrow on if they already shipped it and my tracking number.

Also i bought the silver one and the 16gb MicroSD memory.

For those that are asking how much flash memory does it support, this phone supports up to 32Gb of MicroSD flash memory, so you wont have any problems with it.

Im from mexico though, so i might get it in my hand by the end of the week or maybe on monday of the next week

SOOO!!!... CROSS FINGERS SO I CAN GET IT FAST!!!

Volume limiting is a good thing.

The level of noise in a densely populated bustling metropolis is already too loud for your ears; they are already being damaged. You really do not want your music any louder than that. If you can hear your music above a bus when you're walking down a main street in the middle of the city, then unless you're using in-ears which muffle external noise, well I'm sorry to have to tell you this but your music is too loud. I'm not saying it's too loud for your liking - that's your preference and your opinion. I'm saying it's too loud for your ears, not your brain. The noise of the traffic is damaging your ears already - and you want to listen to your music louder than that? I understand that listening to music is enjoyable, and I understand that you'd rather hear your music than a bus - but you really have to decide: is the super-loud music worth the hearing damage? Do you want to be able to hear when you're 60?

Yes, it behaves like that for me too. I don't really know if it is intentional or not, but my approach is to see the text on the screen and the two buttons as four different buttons, where you can change the function of two of them.
I reacted like you at first. I'm still not sure if I really like it, but you get extra "keys" this way.

Unfortunately, volume limiting is a necessary thing, and large companies like Sony and Sony Ericsson cannot ignore it for one very big reason - class action law suits.

Just getting sued in US alone is enough to prompt companies to put in volume limiting settings in their devices.

What SE could probably do is to make the volume limits user configurable. Put in on by default, but if the user changes it, then you have given up your right to sue Sony Ericsson if your hearing goes.

I agree that having the volume on max (obviously) makes it louder, but it still doesn't compare with other HTC devices I've used and does suggest it is being limited

I'm monitoring xda developers in the hope of a fix

btw, I found myself almost giggling inside last night at the speed of the device as navigating around is most definitly quicker than it was on the diamond
I am finding the narrowness of the screen a little limiting in landscape mode but its probably just a perspective thing given how wide it is.
