Here is some information regarding the reception issuse...

Apple will issue a free software update "within a few weeks" to fix a reception problem affecting its newly released iPhone 4.
In a statement released early Friday, Apple said it was "stunned" to learn that a formula it had used to calculate the reception strength of its smartphone was wrong. Apple also said that customers can return undamaged iPhones within 30 days of purchase for a full refund.

Apple: iPhone 4 signal bars can be wrong, fix ahead

Software can't fix Hardware problems. I know it is "calculating it wrong" but then its still a hardware problem, its getting crappy signal

I am unsure what this software update will do...

I actually get better signal with the iP4 and have not had one drop call so far... I had drop calls with the 3GS a few times... Also at work where reception is not so good I actually get better signal with the iP4... Bearing in mind people are claiming that their 3GS are encountering similar issues...

So lets wait and see how they get out of this HOLE...

Mobile News Online are reporting iphone 4's in for repair already Cracked screens though I have a feeling it's people with over prodding of fingers when they seen yellow spots on their screens. But then again you would have it replaced not repaired that early on

it makes some sense to me what has been said about the signal meter overreading due to faulty calculation, but there is still one thing unexplained...

if the problem also existed in the 3gs and it was hardly noticed, and its more noticeable on the 4, and both have identical signal display (5 bars) then it still suggests that touching the bottom left of the 4 causes more interference than was possible on the 3

What doesn't make sense is how bad the signal must be. If the iPhone is adding one bar on, then it is worse than what it displays on the screen, so really there are problems (hardware-wise).

That issue has NOTHING to do with holding your phone if you are left handed.

in general, I have been getting better reception than on the 3gs... by that I'm not meaning by signal bar indication but by the fact I can make calls in areas that I couldn't with the 3gs, for example on the 21st floor of my office building and in various parts of my train commute.

however, I may well take advantage of the 30 day return policy to switch to the white ... and perhaps by the time the white ships they will have made some hardware change

It's a white wash confusing the general populous, first there isn't a problem you're holding wrong or hey here buy one of these rubber bands at $29.99 I just happened to have made for the most robust iPhone to date, despite the fact we didn't bother for the ones previous which scratched soon as look at them..... then the hunt is on for antenna engineers to fix something that isn't broken, then a software update to fix a miscalculation in formula harking back to the original 3G which has gone unnoticed until the best antenna ever seen arrives......

I'll hold back until Apple get their story straight and the issue fixed.....

might as well... the only thing thats changed for me (except for being able to make a few calls in places I couldn't before) is the great screen which, for me as a person who now needs reading glasses, means I can read more stuff on the screen without those glasses...

oh... and the slimness has really grown on me... oh... and the video recording which I use ALOT now... oh... and the wireless N... and...

actually... when I started writing that I really didn't think much had changed for me, but as I wrote... I realised there was more to it for me than the 3gs

still... I can understand wanting to wait and if Apple change any of the hardware I'm sure there'll be an outcry from existing owners

All phones have their signal diminished when they are hand held, and apple claims there is something wrong with the signal calculation, but the real problem with iP4 in my opinion is that the antenna is on the 'outside' of the phone. When you are holding your iP4, you are blocking its antenna directly, hand against antenna, nothing in between. That probably leads to a bigger decrease in signal, compared to a phone like the 3GS which has an 'internal' antenna.
Apple probably chose this design because the antenna 'receives' more signal (people reporting better call quality and fewer drop calls) but is has the caveat of the 'direct hand contact' which may lead to problems in certain situations (places with weak signal).
The claim that there's something 'wrong' with the signal calculation is bs in my opinion. They've been using the same formula for 3 years and only now they found out it's wrong? It's probably default on the iphone to show more bars than the reality, it makes the phone look good when compared with others. The problem is when this 'funny' signal calculation turned into a shot in the foot for apple. They released a phone which is sensitive to hand grips and weak signals and at the same time were fooling everybody to think the signal was good when it wasn't, which made the antenna's caveats even more prominent by killing calls and signals when the phone was supposedly getting good signal (fake).
This problem has gained such proportions that apple is willing to change something that was probably default on the iphone so far. After the software update, all iphone owners will start seeing less bars everywhere they go. It will look like the phone's signal is even worse and that apple was trying to fool the customers to begin with. And since the antenna is the same (hardware and software), the 'death grip' will remain.

Can we ever trust Apple again just how many times have they changed their story now regarding the antenna issue?

.... and all this is proof Apple rush things out, it's clearly not been tested properly, or else this would have been found a long, long time ago
