I thing it's more easy to make good pictures with the nokia you talk about...SE Cyber-shot Phones are made for the specialist, Nokia are made for silly people lol

So, being that these digital focus cameras are completely software determined, I am going to hold onto the idea that a new firmware will make the K850 a Nokia slayer! Time will tell... I shudder to think about N82 update firmware... That will be another thread I guess.

c'mon SE! You can do it! We are counting on you to not only defend your mobile technology, but your Sony Camera technology is at stake here too!

They are playing marketing here dude. Didn't SE Japan announced a cybershot with 3x optical zoom and using Exmor sensors (used in Alpha 700 DSLR)?? I hope that its quality is on par with normal digital cameras. And Sony might not be at stake for qualities form camera phones are still not there yet, lets hope this Japanese phone live up to SE's name. It has ISO settings up till 1600!!!~~~ AND lets hope next line of cybershot phones has this quality xD

Although I wouldn't put too much weight on the fact the the DSLR-A700 uses the same type of sensor, as the size of the sensor makes a huge difference. (Larger sensor captures more light. Same reason why an astronomer prefers larger telescopes before smaller!) The DSLR-A700 has a sensor of roughly 1.8 inches while for example the K850i only as 1/2.8 inches. That's about 16 times larger sensor and 16 times more sensitivity to light!

Having said that, I think it's a very encouraging sign when a camera phone allows an ISO setting of 1600. That should mean very good pictures at lower ISO speeds.

@Abu
How do we measure sensor sizes btw?

i believe SO905iCS has greatly larger sensor than K850. with Sony's innovative lens architecture. imagine something like how we differentiate Canon A460 and Sony T7 - while the former which is bigger, thicker and had external zoom lens only has 1/3.0" sensor while the slimmer(or should i say the slimmest compact camera) yet smaller T7 which zooms internally has 1/2.5" sensor. even the top-of-the-line fashion high-end cybershot T200 which has 5x internal optical zoom has a bigger 1/2.5" sensor than A460. in the case of SO905iCS, which is even thicker alot than K850 and longer than N95, i came to conclude that the internal zoom lens focal length of it makes more space for a larger sensor size than any of the two camfones as well. note: i know i'm comparing a low-end to high-end camera here(as we all know high-end has more innovations, more possibilities and better technology) but i just want to make some perception on how sony could address sensor sizes without making bulkiness on the half of the phone's dimensions

here is another galore (13 pages in all) of photo comparo of N82, N95, K850, G600, LG viewty:-

http://publish.it168.com/2007/1129/20071129000401.shtml

Yet another comparo which shows K850 photos didnt perform that well at all against all the other 5Mp camphone....sigh

[edit] Viewed at full-size, K850 photos are so "flat" (i.e dont show depth very well) compared to N95 and N82.

If you know the focal length, then you take a photo of something you know the dimensions of and then use basic trigonometry to calculate the sensor size. The best is of course if you already know the sensor type and size:
K850: Sony IMX020 1/2.8" CMOS sensor
N95: Micron Technology MT9P001 1/2.5" CMOS sensor

@mib Nice one bud. That should rest the case even for a harden SE freak Sony are a shadow of what they used to be - I wonder for how much longer they can fool people around with the glorious brandname and past.

all these pictures prove is that N95 sucks on detail, and K850 pics have too much blue in them (hence the purple reds).

We all know this. But look at these cut's below at full size and you will see why I don't take the N95 that seriously:

N95:

K858:

The lack of detail cannot be recovered. The K850 pics however can be colour corrected.

Sure the N95 pictures may print better at 4x6 without retouching, but try and print a pic like the N95 pic above at any sort of decent size, and it will just look like crap.

max wedge i agree with you.
in the past the problem was if n95 is better than k800(5mp vs 3mp) and now it's between n95 and k850 (5mp vs 5mp). now lets be serious, if n95 was compared with a 3mp camera how the hell can now win against a 5mp camera?

In certain far away shots, N95 has lost some details due to its sharpening.
But it is not the case in general. Take a look at this. You can see K850 got more ridiculous color and less detail.

Do a count and you see N95/82 produced much more better shots than K850. N95 do produce some bad shots but on the other most of K850 shots look bad compared to the others.

Since you like to boast about K850 screen, let's take a look at a actual comparison (instead of those hogwash ones you posted). What have you got to say now?

@max_wedge

I don't know who or when that picture was taken but it's very obvious the picture wasn't taken when the Camera was focused, even me a bad photographer that knows nothing gets better results than that. Who took that picture with the N95 Miles Flint or the new SE CEO?

@mib1800

Many thanks for posting a proper comparison with proper brightness settings at long last as the other pictures were just a joke and just what SE fans want to believe shame it isn't true as i repeatedly pointed out.

You know, if one checks all over the net, 99% of all tests agree the N95 is the winner (pic quality wise - is already 100% in everything als). Ok, there is still this 1% and I see some fans grabbing on straws

Looking at the screen comparison, you can clearly see that N95 16m screen has much better color definition than K850 256K screen.

So a 16m color does really make a different.
