@786KBR: No offence but after watching the African Nations Cup where all of these teams played, I'm afraid they'll be the joke of the World Cup...check this, there's no Nigeria, no Senegal, No Tunisia, and No Egypt...on paper those are the best teams on the contintent but somehow they conspired in play some of the worst football in the qualifiers allowing minnows through to the finals in Germany.
PS: Just saw a print ad for the W810i in Heat magazine.

@ Brix & Menageryl, isn't there some sort of app similar to Symbianware's Appman available for your handsets? It's smooth, frees up memory at the click of a key.... Lets you view running processes, open files, allows you to kill stubborn operations, etc

@Gamer: Ahh, another Gooner on thread.
@Menageryl: Agree with you on the java implentation on some Nokia models but particularly in it's S40 line-up.
@786KBR: Some W800 buyers are going to be pissed when they see the W810 being advertised.

Kryptic: Well, yeah, 'course such an app. exists - hell I run two applications capable of doing so 24/7 as "system" processes which can't be closed but by request... This, however, is telling, in that despite said apps. being available and actively used constantly, I find that in a 18 to 24 hour period I still end up in a position where a certain amount of (slowly increasing) RAM becomes locked and irrecoverable by or through any means or applications - thus the necessary sys.-restart to force the system to release it!
' I dunno if it's not perhaps one of me apps l use regularly that has a serious memory leak of some kind or something similar... I cannae live without any of 'em though so I've learned to live and deal with it - it ain't really a pain 'til I need do something seriously memory-intensive / demanding. And then, as I mentioned, it's a quick "off-n'-on." Once a day, after serious usage since the previous restart.
' Slightly off-topic:
' Actually my only fear right now re. the P990 (barring the typical "buy today, obsolete tomorrow" complaint - I just know that we'll see a P-Series phone with DVB-H instead of FM radio, and HSPA coming next!) is that all my "must have" applications won't be available, or their functionality not be represented in some form or another. But hopefully this delayed release has worked to it's advantage in this arena.
' 'k. I'm done. <G>

@Menageryl, i see what you mean, there are some apps that simply must remain open, come hell or waters high That's how feel about an app like Netfront, there's no way i'd touch the phone's browser with a barge-pole, not while Netfront zips along quite nicely. I've picked up a bug or two particular the my current firmware which require a reboot, but nothing serious, thank heavens.
@Brix, uxolo mfowethu, it wasn't meant to be.

@all: Getting to work this morning was bitch, it didn't help that the weather is all gloomy and rainy down here. Honestly though I think the ref killed the game when he sent off Lehman, granted the German looked very suspect when he went for that striker. All in all it was a good game...congrats to Barca because even when Ronaldinho was off form on the night they still managed to win a trophy that seemed headed to England for the second year in succession.
What do you guys think about all the news phones announced this morning...personally I like the look of the Z710i...about a month ago on the rumour thread there was a discussion about the successor to the cancelled Z700 and some clown came up with a picture of some silly-looking Alcatel. Of all the new phones, this one looks very desirable.

LOL, wouldn't advise that ref to be around any Arsenal supporters this morning.
I quite like the lines of the W710; can see the better half liking it too, even if it's just for that 'Hatha Violet' colour option...

@da wanqsta: I've got no beef with the result of the match...some people might be upset but just being in the final and the road Arsenal took there was amazing beating a galaxy of stars and keeping a yellow submarine submerged.
@all: Seems like DVB-H has been quietely launched by Multichoice...the first handset available is some obscure Sagem and the signal is available in all the major centres.
Here's the full write-up by my buddy AndyO aka Wirelessmonkey:
ANDREW OCTOBER
SOUTH AFRICANS will get to see the 2010 Soccer World Cup on their
cellphones. But, unlike the mobile television that is currently
streamed to cellphones, the new technology being rolled out for 2010
will be broadcast directly to your phone, just like normal TV.
Marking International Telecommunication's Day all three of SA's
cellphone networks, Sentech, SABC, MultiChoice, MWEB and the
government's technology regulator ICASA stood alongside the Minister
of Communications Dr Ivy Matsepe-Casaburri to launch digital video
broadcast to handhelds, the technology that will bring the 2010 Cup
to millions of South Africans and the world.
"When South Africa was awarded the 2010 World Cup many international
media doubted our ability to deliver the technology that was required
to carry the matches to the world.
"They underestimated the innovation of Vodacom, the expansiveness of
MTN and the marketing muscle of Cell C and today the technology is
already here.
"We have broadband internet, high definition television and now
mobile TV direct to cellphones," said Koos Bekker of Naspers, the
company that carries the license to bring the broadcast to the small
screen.
Showcasing the first locally available cellphone capable of receiving
the signal, a Sagem, the guardians of our technology have teamed-up
to ensure that the signal will carried to every person wanting to
watch the event on their cellphones.
While Sentech's technologies will realise high definition television,
television broadcast at a higher definition than standard television
and that is fully digital, and DVBH, the cellphone networks are
backing the distribution of the cellphones that will be required to
view the new format.
MultiChoice and the SABC have teamed-up to ensure the coverage and
broadcast of the images and the interactive interface that is
promising to revolutionise mobile TV for many in the country, Africa
and the world.
"Today was chosen because it's the day the international technology
community has set aside to celebrate World Telecommunications Day.
"As we celebrate this day we are taking stock of our resources and
our country's beauty," said the Minister in her address.
"We are acknowledging our technology that brought the world oil from
coal, the best steal production and deep-level mining.
"We are also acknowledging our communications networks who can be
placed amongst global players," she said.
DVBH is a cellphone broadcast technology that allows for the digital
terrestrial broadcast of live television channels to a cellphone.
It's a new technology that's not yet commercially available anywhere
in the world and SA is in the race to be amongst the first to launch
the service.
It's a feat that would not only astound the country and the
continent, but that will carry a message to the world that Africa is
as technologically advanced as any other place in the world.
Commenting on criticism by Celtel Zambia that "cellphone companies
tend to chase the glamorous things, the things that glitter, and
neglect the simpler products" like SMS that can help to connect
African communities, Minister Matsepe-Casaburri said, "People say
that these things are a luxury but it's not.
"It's also a tool for development as cellphone technology reaches
rural communities where it is making communication possible for very
ordinary people."
Echoing the Minister's comments Vodacom Chief Operating Officer,
Pieter Uys, said, "It's exactly the opposite. People are hungry for
access to the internet and to communication.
"In countries like the DRC where there is only 10 000 fixed lines and
very few good roads, our technology is bring communication through
the air to isolated communities.
"Our SMS penetration in Tanzania is actually higher than in South
Africa - this is significant because it shows that Africa is also
literate.
"Cellphones are spurring development across the continent and it's
empowering the people."
While DVBH is already available in Soweto, Johannesburg, Cape Town
and Durban, South Africans will have to wait for the technology to
perfected by MultiChioce before it will be expanded nationally - in
time for live soccer in the palm of your hand.

True; fair comment, brixster.
BTW, I'm really digging the new W850's looks; an SE slider at last and an absolutely stunning-looking phone (IMO) at that! Dang, the stong-contrasting black n' Walkman Orange accents works for me.
Me likes indeed; pity it isn't sporting the K800's flagship cam, but I understand (I think...) the immediate marketing strategies behind this.
I was never overly mad about the K750's spartan looks, but since the W810, W900 etc., there's so many damn fine-looking SE phones emerging.
Aesthetically, I think SE really are moving in the right direction.
I have to admit that I do like the looks of the N70 and N80 as well though, but the N91 looks like some kind of metal meter-reading device for me.
Oh well, each to their own; variety be the spice of life indeed... |

I'm too lazy to read the info on the SE website but do the new phones feature software from Blogger? Blogging is one of the applications that will be highly in demand as more people start writing the thoughts and publishing them in cyberspace.
I also like the fact that all the new phones sport RSS software.

' Thanks for that article re-print Brix! MUCH appreciated!
' Of course you've just made my point for me and made me wanna actually cry about the P990i being sans DVB-H when we just know it'll happen soon! <SOBS!!>

I suppose they'll include DVB-H in a later upgrade of the P990....P1000?.
It should be said that the service is currently in trial phase across SA...the only issue I see is availability of handsets, thus far I only know of the Nokia 7710, available locally, that supports DVB-H.
