@pinguino2 I'm dissapointed you disagree with me. I thought I was right about EVERYTHING, ALL the time
Oh no. I said I disagree. I never say you were wrong... but now that you admit it... well, I have to agree with you.

HTC Touch Diamond > Xperia X1 (matter a fact HTC designed the X1)
I brought an HTC because of the simple fact that se's ball game is below par when it comes to software and reliability. But I see why alot of se fans are excited about the X1 i mean, 1. its SE branded, 2, the interface is very appeling ; but to tell you the truth i can see this phone getting boring in a matter of mins. At first sight most people are attracted to the operating system and the navigation, but be realistic how long do you think clicking on a bunch of lil windows that expand will keep you interested. It's not even like theres more to the customization on top of wm6, besides a Fishyazz clock. lol (Maby thats why it was delayed so long) Just giving an opinion though.
But anyone who is tired of se i recommend choosing an HTC phone. If you thought the A1 & a200 12 DESKTOP was beautiful wait till you see Touch Flow 3D on HTC's later models.

I agree the definition of smartphone is far from definitive
Of course it is a smartphone, but by the definition that makes iphone a smartphone you could also argue A200 or even A100 phones qualify as smartphones, especially those with good multimedia specs.
One thing I agree on, iphone upped the anti on UI design. I'm keen to get a good look at X1 panels to see if I can make any real use of them. I'm especially keen to try the SDK and see what I can do in terms of designing my own panels that will allow me to add utility that suits me and not what some SE marketing guru thinks I want.

HTC and X1 are WM phones with fancy media players and pic browsers. Your post would have been better on any page <50 of this thread.

The panel API seems no more than a means of WM apps to communicate and conform to the behavior of the X-panels. There's nothing restricting WM apps from being finger friendly except by design. |

Yes HTC made the X1, but you clearly wrote that HTC designed it which is not true. SE designed the phone and designed their software shell (the panels), then they got HTC to build it.

my mistake should have paid closer attention. So all se has done was make the plastic case and an application that shortcuts to wm6 programs with fancy animations?!&%$ I think it should have been called the HTC X1

Well I'd say quite a bit of attention was paid in creating such a beautiful design, with that awesome arc slider. And there's quite a bit of metal in there too, not just plastic! You've got to admit it looks a hell of a lot better than those HTC designs!
Oh yeah, and it's not like no other companies do this. Apple themselves don't own a single factory, and get Chinese OEMs to do the job for them. HTC has made phones for Palm and a few other brands too. Apparently Hewlett Packard outsources also.

If you think that's all there is to X1 phone design then go enjoy your plasticy HTC and we'll enjoy the impeccably designed metal X1. Is there a phone that does more than shortcut to programs with fancy animations? I mean, don't they all do that? |

Your missing the entire point, the statement I made was towards se (Sony Ericsson)'s contribution to the x1. It's called an se phone but all se have done was make the plastic case and a program that shows wm6 progs as shortcuts... Thats all.. HTC on the other hand have created the acutal phone.... you know the hardware... including the screen, keyboard, and buttons you will be pressing... Stating that i feel the phone should be called an HTC since the heart of the phone was created but HTC. Im sorry that your taking my opinon so seriously. I promise next time when se creates a good phone ill make you feel better by boasting it strengths.
Also just because i like to debate on matters
Plastic Vs Metal. I will be very happy dropping my plastic phones only recieveing a scratch while you can recieve dents that can potentially cripple the hardware inside it.(Happens to people in cars)

That i can totally agree on. Sony Ericsson still has the upper hand and my favor when it comes to designs... HTC's current production line reminds me of how nokia made the same phone over and gave them 2 different numbers.

I think you are missing the point. It's the design, formfactor and ergonomics that SE make the phone better or worse than others, given adequate hardware. Any OEM can make durable hardware (if they try hard enough). SE themselves make durable hardware.
What's significant about the X1 is it's formactor and ergonomics. And of course looks is also important in a phone, you can deny it if you want, but imho ugly phones never do well in the mass market, even if they have small loyal followings.

Plastic deforms when struck more than a rigid metal shell, therefore a sufficiently strong metal casing will provide more protection to internal components that don't take flexing very well.
Because it's metal it doesn't have to be super strong to withstand drops at any angle from a height of 2M or more WITHOUT flexing on impact, and without denting the case.
Even more so the same argument applies to metal chasis (such as the W910).
@whybe, of course you are right. I don't expect panels to be any kind of iphone thing, but I do hold out hope the panels will have some use. But what we really needs is app vendors to start writing finger friendly applications.
I also think it's time (WM7?) that microsoft pulled their finger out (sic) and started offering a finger friendly interface that extends through the whole of the WM UI topology (not just standby screen overlays).
Otherwise the fun ends as soon as you actually need to use an app. We want bigger X and OK buttons for example. Swipe scrolling. An onscreen keyboard more like the iphone (but still with HWR support of course).
That would be a good start.

First of all, cars have mostly polymer/fiberglass bodies.
If you like debating, then make sure you have a factual basis for your argument(s)
The heart of the phone is the MSM7200a Qualcomm chipset...not made by HTC. Neither is the camera. HTC doesn't make LCD screens either. I could go on.
HTC is an ODM. ODM'ing is a common practice in any industry. Don't be foolish to think that because a device has a certain brand name that every component of that device is created by that particular manufacturer.
This all doesn't matter anyways, because HTC has yet to "teach SE a lesson" on premium phone design
Certainly, by now, HTC would have shown SE "how it's done." |
