Eish. I've just paid the road tax (kinda like our annual licencing in SA) for the new Wanqmobile, a Toyota Previa MPV. Because the vehicle has a 2.4 litre engine, I pay considerably more than a smaller capacity car. How much? £170 (about R2000 for 12 months road tax!).
Before this the vehicle's MOT (Ministry of Transport), which is an annual roadworthy certificate, also needed to be renewed. Because evey single vehicle on the road must be insured, you can only get your car's new road tax if you have your valid MOT (kinda like SA) and updated insurance policy/letter. Fortunately most UK post offices are able to process vehicle road tax.
Imagine trying to enforce a similar annual roadworthy test on vehicles in SA... LOL, can you imagine the outrage...!

LOL @ da wanqsta: I remember a couple of years ago when govt tried to introduce the card licence there was a big uproar, eventually it got done. Having every car in SA insured is possible but we're far off, they first to get all the unroadworthy vehicles off the road. @brad: The ad was in a leaflet for Vodacom.

Yep, I was in EL at the time when they were introduced.
Had to 'trade in' my SA driving licence card when I had my car and bike licences transferred onto my EU driver's licence. The SA ones get sent back to the SA embassy by the UK's DVLA.
What's great is that I can use my EU driver's licence card as much as I want when I'm in SA and it has no expiry date on it.
In the UK, the SA driver's licence card is only permitted for one year, the same duration as an international driver's licence that one can apply for at most AA branches in SA. |

It's always confuzzled me how resistant people are to change, as Brix has mentioned. The card-type licence is a good example.
My Singaporean buddy and i have been speaking off innovations in the technological field, and were discussing the possibility of being able to order a customized phone in the future, specifically one combining the best features of various manufactuers and models. Is such a thing feasible, and any comment on timeframes?

Two days sans posting here, feels weird.
@da krypsta: The possibility of one day ordering your own customised phone is indeed possible, just check what Nike have done- you can order your own unique shoe off their website. Maybe Nokia can start doing this because they've got some much cross-pollination across their models that it would be quite feasible to "mix n match".
I doubt though whether you could order specific features from various manaufacturers. That would be too complicated, just think of all the issues like patents, designs, etc that will come up... Mobile phones might all look the same but they're quite different from one another.
@ALL: Hi Fi Corp is tempting me once again to splurge out the hard-earned cash...check this: 75CM LCD TV, 1024x768 screen, for R7799... The only catch though is that it doesn't seem to come with HDMI support.
Talking of which we've got all these ads today in the paper by electronics shops bragging about HD when SA is years off from getting any HD broadcast over the air by the trusted old SABC.

@756KBR: That's quite a nice deal.
EDIT: We're far off from getting the capable handsets but next week we'll be way ahead of the pack when HSDPA launches, and please don't ask me what all those letters stand for.
Vodacom's 3G HSDPA (high speed downlink packet access), which is up to five times faster than 3G and faster than ADSL, will be available commercially from 2 April 2006. Access will be through the exclusive use of a Vodafone Mobile Connect 3G broadband card with HSPDA, which can also be used on any of the Vodafone 3G broadband networks worldwide where roaming agreements are in place."3G HSDPA delivers performance comparable to today's ADSL and wireless LAN services, but with the added benefit of mobility. It is 3G on steroids!" says Pieter Uys, COO of Vodacom.

That's great to hear that SA is really pioneering HSDPA in some way.
I wonder how HSDPA/ 3.5G phone's batteries (usage and stand-by times) will cope with the extra data transfer loads, streaming and processing speeds, etc. |

You'll have to either carry a charger with you, have a spare battery or have the phone on permanent charge when you're using any of the HSDPA services which will require a lot of processing/battery power. Good luck to those who'll buy the first capable handsets. Talking of which it seems they're likely to come some time at the end of this year.
