Hi Angel, good to know you're ok. U're right about the intercellular plans. I got the names mixed up.

Aya this starcomms gist is getting interesting, but this means we'll not be able to use conventional handsets to access this service right?

@all, from all this superb analysis one can easily think aya is a secret agent that works for starcomms telecoms, hmmm, we r watch. at least he made me buy a starcomms line ie 01 8116877, well done aya, you are good with ur marketing strategy well done.
but on the contrary he could just b analysing a good company, anyway we r watchin.

I hear that starcomms pcmcia card costs 35k and they won't allow you to bring a substitute for them to config. I am talking to someone who says he has 20k cards. I think that is still too expensive.

Otherwise, I think you will either have to make do with their pdas or you buy a desktop phone.

I do not know that Intercellular has activated the use of the built-in browsers on their lines. We can only wait & hope they do it soon.??As for Starcomms' CDMA EV-DO, I doubt if just any handset can be used on the platform. I actually need to change my present CDMA handset, but I will wait till the platform is launched and compatible devices announced before I make my move.

?If you are getting a Starcomms PDA-phone presently, remember that you can only use it as a modem with your PC/laptop, but not as a standalone device for internet access. According to the customer care lady I spoke with last year, you cant use the built-in internet applications. Imagine! On a smartphone - utter nonsense. But at least this will change with EV-DO.

Seems you guys are all wrapped up in CDMA out there in Nigeria. Is it really a viable alternative to GSM?

My dear friend, impeached governor of Bayelsa State, Diepreye Alamieyesheigah had his luxury Cape Town apartment seized by local prosecutors following a tip-off from Nigerian authorities.

@brix: For most people, I'd say yes, in all probability, CDMA is. My observations are that people are now waking up to that, though we will have to wait and see. As for your friiend, DSP, he had it coming. I only wish others like him will be made to face the music as well - and soon. There are bigger fish than this guy walking around free and spending our looted funds.

In other news...Vodacom has walked away from deal to purchase V Mobile saying that the shareholders of the Nigerian mobile operator were asking too much. This paves the way for MTC(Vodafone-alligned) to buy the network.

Its about time Vmobile got this buy-over issue sorted out once and for all, so they can face the real business of Telecoms.

Like I said before regarding starcomms proposed 3G service, affordability will be the key to its success.

Poor Alams, I bet he'd be wishing he hadn't gone to London that time.

Mtel has announced that its network is "EDGE-ready".

Issues: Last year, with little evidence to suggest that anyone on the Mtel network uses GPRS, the operator announced ambitious plans to build a 3G network within a space of 6 months. This is over 6 months since then and no news of 3G, but suddenly the network is EDGE-ready. I hope they don't actually think that EDGE is 3G . That would be embarrasing.

Aya please give Mtel a break, haba how can they not know the difference between gprs and EDGE, for God's sake they are successfully running a GSM network. Anyone with an EDGE enabled handset should please let us know if its working. BTW anyone using Mtel gprs here?

Yes I just finished devouring a delicious drumstick from chicken republic. Hmmm finger licking and sumptuous.

I have continually asked that same question not only here but everywhere I go, and have found not one single Mtel GPRS user. I am still wondering who will use the EDGE and 3G they are talking about. Ok, amby, I'll give Mtel a break - a 30-second break

Now, I wish either Glo oe MTN would give us EDGE at the least.

I tire for you. You no fear for bird flu? The other day I ordered rice and chicken at Mr Biggs, both attendants at the counter chorused "With chicken?". I didnt get it until I had innocently said "Yes", when they both heaved a sigh of relief and chorused "Thank God!". Yes; I have eaten chicken at least twice in the last week.....
