There's no monthly access on my Starcomms line. Its pure prepaid.
@all: I started learning PHP scripting last year and made enough progress to re-design my site in PHP then. Now, I have moved on to PHP/MySQL databases, and I successfully created my first database today. I created a database-driven poll for our Mobile Data Survey which ran versions 1.0 & 2.0 last year. Version 2.1 is ready now, so and cast your vote at http://www.domainstandard.net/mobility/user.php (Web or WAP, it makes no difference).

@Aya: your starcomms line may be prepaid, but they remove N50 daily as access charge which translates to N1500 monthly. I'm not too sure, but I think MTS and Reltel offer free access. The intercellular i-Talkmore also offers free access.

@amby: sorry to blow your bubble on this, but there's no access charge whatsoever on my line. The Starcomms guys call it "private plan". Anyone interested in no-access-charge should ask for that when purchasing.

@mikky: Nope. I simply bought the phone/line. I load my airtime and talk on. Just walk into any Starcomms shop, or pick one from the numerous sales people on the street.

@Aya: there's a question I've been meaning to ask you. Do cdma phones (like ur starcomms mobile) have built-in browsers as their gsm compatriots do? If yes can u use the internet service provided by the PTO's for wap on the phone?

@amby: Yes; CDMA phones have built-in browsers, but in most cases they have not been activated and so subscribers have not been able to use them.
However, the built-in browser is functional on Reltel's Pocket PC-phone. Starcomms has also announced that its new broadband platform to be launched next week (delivering speeds up to 400kbps) will allow Pocket PC-phones (I don't know about regular phones, but they will be stupid not to include those) to use the built-in browser.

Hmmm 400kbps? That'll be worth acquiring a line for. Only hope it'll be affordable. |

@aya: How fast is starcomms now. I used it once with a phone connection and was getting almost 2mbps. Compared to 21st century's 46kpbs. I want to get their pcmcia card which I hear is faster. What do you think. What's up with this broadband jist

@egunje: I haven't used Starcomms for internet access for some time now because of GSM awoof . But someone who used it recently said it was blazing fast. It is reported that the Mobile Data card generally delivers a more stable connection.
Starcomms seems to be the guys to watch at the moment.

From Starcomms website:

Starcomms, Nigeria’s leading Total Communications Solutions provider, has installed a pilot project for high–speed mobile broadband services. The service, which is yet another innovation on the Starcomms network, is capable of delivering download speeds of between 400 Kbps and 2.4 Mbps, up to ten times the speed of the CDMA 1X technology.
Subscribers to the service will be able to enjoy high–speed internet on mobile phones, MDCs and traditional fixed applications. For example, they will be able to watch movies and sports broadcast over a mobile handset.
The cell sites to back up this service have already been deployed around Lagos and some terminals have been provided and tested, adding that user trials were currently under way.

Amby i dey o!
Intercellular i-Talkmore was deducting N35 daily access charge, and N31 GSM calls, i registered for Telecentre, which comes with free access charge, N23 GSM calls but on a condition that you must load up to N10,000 monthly, which i can achieve since am using it for my call centre. But am not satisfied with their services since i cannot dial an MTN line from it, though they claim is a technical issue that will soon be reolved, but i dont know how soon.
AYA: do you know if i can use my minibrowser with Intercellular? |
