@Amby.... My broz, they ARE noticing. Have U heard that there are now free versions of Oracle and IBM's DB2? That is thanks to Open source db's like MySQL... which I am downloading as I type this post. (I am also ...eh ... searching for the free Oracle version )
All it takes is for one bold network to do what the current CDMA Guys are not doing very well: let everyone see the savings! Even free weekend calls alone will get you loads of subscribers!
But it will be interesting to see how the current CDMA Guys will take advantage of the "GSM" option. I'll bet the CEO's will be knocking on all sorts of doors looking for "strategic" GSM partners.
Part of the problem is also the owners of the CDMA Companies. I just finished reading a Bio of Francis Arthur Nzeribe ("The African Legend"). If the current crop of Business men can structure their biz like Nzeribe, they will be half rich as the man. (The Bio was printed circa 1983 and it was a really enjoyable read. Highly reccomended.)
The CDMA Bosses are just like the Bosses of the Banks that lost in the Con-SOLUDO-tion exercise. If they are willing to lose some control, they will survive. |

I disagree. ALL of the problem is the CDMA owners (+ the management, if it makes any difference). The technology is sound and flawless.
Put those networks in the hands of the right guys and we will have another miracle story like Glo's in our hands.
Change ownership and management. One way forward is via mergers and acquisitions. The bigger CDMA networks should simply acquire smaller ones, where viable. Then go public. |

@ Aya,ucik06,Coola,& Angel : Thanks for your concern.
What's happening to MTS? With all the gra-gra and noise MTS displayed at their relaunch two years back I thought they would take the CDMA market by storm and dorminate the market by now. Anyone has an idea of the CDMA operators' subcriber base? |

@brym:?Starcomms leads the pack with about 250,000. Followed by Reltel with a little under 200,000. All the others follow. |

| ?Not being able to get a call through to another network is not necessarilly a pointer to a problem with your network. It could actually be that the other network has not allocated enough connection points to your network. |

Some quick GPRS report for Kano:
MTN:
Strangely is live in the outskirts. I couldnt load any page though. No MTN GPRS inside the main town. No GPRS along the by-pass in Kaduna also!
Vmobile:
Dead, dead, dead.
Glo:
Guess... Up Glo!!!!
(I will test Glo in Kaduna on my way back Thursday.)
@All... Anyone else successful with Glo FonePals? After Prodigits, nothing else trips me. And I suspect that Glo "seeded" the first 10 or so "registered" members. I don't think they exist.

@mikkyroy:I have been using Reltel's voice and data since May '05 but hadly had connection problems. Voice calls always connected with most networks. I only had intermitent hitches with mobile internet for about a week when they changed their 'log on' interface.
@All: Hardluck Nigerians! hope for a better outing in Ghana 2008. Boy, how I hate third-place matches, CAF should scrap it. |

mikky please stay away from reltel if what u need it for is voice calls. call quality is very poor. can't say anything about their data service cos I've never used it. i'd recommend either starcomms or multilinks.

@blackgig: You are much welcome here . I have checked up Prodigits in the past but it didn't quite gel, so I didn't stay.??Coolapostle here is the Prodigits regular, and I am sure you two would have met.??So, let's get to know you: what phone/s you use, on which network/s, and what you do.....

Welcome Blackgig... and yes I actually know the Guy but as "ajsagai" and not "coolapostle".
I returned today from Kano... and Glo GPRS was live right from my hotel room, all through the expressway from Kano thru Kaduna and down to my little mansion in Abuja. How is THAT for coverage. I could be on Prodigits all thru the trip.
The only poroblem is that Glo is charging me. But the experience of browsing with Glo is just... wonderful.
@All I am testing Google Earth at a fairly fast cyber cafe. It is something else. You all should try it. I was dazed when it zoomed in on where the Rivers Niger and Benue meet. |
