@da wanqsta: If I'm not mistaken, Prison Break is already being screened on MNET.
Any clue as to who could've taken that 40 million quid from the Securitas Depot?

Like all debates this one doesn't make sense if we're looking at it from the perspective of the networks and those among us who benefit every 20 months with a new cellphone.
The system that supports cellphone subsidies also exploits PAYG users with ridiculous call and data rates. It's not like these users are buying a sim card every second month, networks make a lot off money off them and it's just fair that they share some of them gravy thats been reserved for contract subs.

@ brixster,
That's great news that it's been shown in SA at the same time as here. Most UK new movie releases actually premier roughly at the same time in SA too, it seems. Good stuff.
40 million bucks... that should buy a house in Constantia...maybe a bachelor's pad in Camps Bay if one looks at the way the price of housing is going up! |

@da wanqsta: That's over R400 million...we could do a lot with that sort of cash lying about.

@ brix,
I shoulda guessed that you were referring to Pounds when you mentioned 'quid', but wasn't sure if it was deliberate. Yeah, R400 million is nothing short of phenomenal. Saak that massive Euro Lottery!
Can you imagine what is going on in the Securitas top brass's HQ right now...?Some tough questions and some heads are bound to roll. A classic 'inside job?'

The Reserve Bank uses a heavily armed police escort when they deliver money to depots around the country...Streets are closed off and those policement look as if they'll find any excuse to shoot someone with an R5 up the posterior.

Hi guys
Eish I am not upto date with this.
But I agree with you. The only reason I have the contract now is because of a free fone. Without the free fone, no.
But maybe they will structure the product is some way. |

@bongzino: If they so desperately want people to upgrade their phones they should market the services which come with these phones...the networks are doing it but not suffecient enough.
If they launch a new service, tell subscribers that you'll only be able to use this service with a new phone. Right now we have people walking around with 3G phones not having ever made a videocall or downloaded a audio and video clips...all because "the phone was free and I was due for a for an upgrade".
I don't say do away with contracts but they should be shortened to 12 months, there should be no handset subsidies which instead should go to lowering the price of calls and data rates...
For those wishing to get contracts they should have one flat rate for unlimited GPRS and calls on the same network could be charged a flat rate after certain hours as is the case in the US...but I doubt this will ever happen because networks are by their nature greedy.

Shorten to 12 months with no handset subsidies?
People want the phones more than the free minutes imo. |

@786KBR: A phone that will be mostly used to take the occasional pic, make calls and send text messages.
If you want a top-of-the-range phone why not just buy it and get the benefits of lower call and data rates?

@ Brix I still stand by my thinking that people wont fork out R2500++ for a phone...
Weekender packages are very popular and they often offer very high spec phones... I doubt weekender customers want to pay R3000+ for a W800 if they can pay R135pm and get it free with another high spec upgrade in another 20 months.
Maybe im wrong and if things go icasas way, we'll see how it pans out. |

@786KBR: Like the average monkey, cellphone subscribers are not immune to behavioural change. Like I said before, they'll get used to the idea of purchasing phones and contracts seperately...The cellphone contracts have outlived their lifespan because they were needed in the beginning to get more users...now we've got well over 18 million cellphone users (and counting).

Well if the lower the call/data rates.
Then I might take the contract without the handset but that must be a significant rate cuts. Otherwise no.
@brix
Talking about used features on the fones. The problem is in both users and SPs.
First is most people see the fone as the status symbol. Not as a tool/device.
And I hate the way marketing works. With an example of the Vlive marketing, they alway act like it a phone specific thing while anyfone can browse that vlive portal, there is no need put all those menu items on the phone. One bookmark and the right connection setting can do just fine.
One more thing did anyone heard anything about the earth quake / shake in the southern africa ?
A friend from Durban say they were vacated at 12H00 AM because their biulding was shaking????

@bongzino: I'm not going to diss Vodafone Live too much as in the past because it's quite useful, I agree though that Vodacom were naughty when they said it could only be accessed from certain handsets.
Heard about the earthquake this morning but no death and destruction so it wasn't big news...apart from the fact that some people were shook up last night.
