You would have to de-brand it yourself or if you find a mobile phone shop that will do it BUT as far as i know, there is no software available that would allow you to de-brand the phone back to the generic SE firmware ie without vodafones rubbish on there. So you would be stuck with a vodafone branded p990i unless you went sim free.

Probably but not too sure, i know the voda branded M600i has some functionality removed and theres no way at the moment you can de-brand the phone sadly.
But going by vodaphone in the past, they do tend to butcher their phones pretty badly...which is why i stay away from branded phones like the plague. |

Almost certainly if the butchering of the M600i was anything to go by - just one example is removing the task manager functions and replacing it with a task switcher with no ability to end tasks.
Voda also tend to do things like locking internet account settings, so it is possible you may find that they have locked their GPRS settings as the first priority internet account meaning you can't automatically use wifi in preference.
The browser homepage would almost certainly be locked to the Voda live! site too. |

right run into alittle problem now i ordered a P990i on orange being told it was available and still hasnt arrived (obviously i wasnt aware of the release times when i ordered it)
Do i wait until i get one which could be weeks????
or do i choose another phone? if so help PLEASE> |

This is beyond ridiculous!!  I've gotten rid of my XDA and now using a T68i... got the memorystick and the screen protector... and they put the release back further.. *sigh* |

Vodafone have a definite release date of September the 8th, it's in there new magazine with the tarrifs there offering it on. I know this because I asked in there shop today.
I also asked in the Orange shop today and rang up the upgrades dept. All they are saying is a September release sometime and it's subject to change to next month, no tarrif information available until the handset is released? Pretty poor and rubbish compared to Vodafone if you ask me, does anyone here in the know have any more of an idea of pricing or release date on Orange? |

I think that just killed it for me.
I'll still wait for the release to have a proper play.
But the pda-phone (tyntyn) is looking more attractive.
Or even the k800 and putting the rest towards portable laptop or umpc.
Because you know for a fact that given the choice SE are going to side with PS3 over xbox 360. VOIP software is most likely to be only skype stuff and I get the feeling I can kiss good bye to using windows live messenger (or it's portable equivalent) on the phone.
That's really sad.

IMO that review completely overplays the Symbian Signed (which is NOT DRM by the way). The review was obviously written by someone who does not fully understand the Symbian 9.1 platform security model.
I'm not saying the way Symbian Signed works is perfect, far from it in fact but it is utter rubbish to suggest that all freeware apps must be signed by SE.
For a start the signing is done by Symbian themselves - nothing to do with SE as such, and secondly applications ONLY need signing if they specifically use various protected APIs on the phone. This means that a large percentage of apps will never even need signing. Finally, there is no cost to the developers in getting freeware apps which use protected APIs signed - it is free.
Incidently, Symbian Signed does not only apply to UIQ3 based phones, but Nokia S60v3 (also based on Symbian 9.1) has exactly the same level of platform security, and there is already plenty of apps available for S60v3 - Symbian Signed doesn't seem to have caused too many issues there.
I'm not sure what you are talking about when you refer to "SE are going to side with PS3 over xbox 360" either? What does this have to do with anything? On the flipside though would you expect any PS3 support from Microsoft... no? Thought not!
If you need MSN Messenger (of which Live Messenger is nothing more than the latest - currently beta - version) there are already two apps out there in Agile Messenger, and IM+ which not only support Messenger, but just about every other IMO protocol around.
As for VOIP - to be honest I wouldn't have though Skype would end up being the only option (that is if they ever produce a UIQ version), and frankly I'd rather have proper industry standard SIP support anyway rather than the closed and proprietary Skype P2P protocol.
Mind you I personally think VOIP on mobile handsets right now is pretty pointless. UMA is where things are heading - and with all the big players involved.
