regarding the P990. ill agree wit u guys on the looks but lets face it . . . . .the phone is great FEATURE-WISE!!! but i feel they should have kep the traditional P-series feeling. That is Huge screen with a flip down keyboard. But then again everyone is entitled to their own opinion, and its quite interesting to hear everyone else thoughts and give their input. I cant wait for the W900 to arrive on our technology lacking shores. We need more gadgets in South Africa guys!!!!!

@wazarmoto: We might get things a couple of months late but I don't think we're starved of technology.
When the W900 launches here locally it will be the most advanced "non-smartphone" phone available.

@ brixsta,
LOL, I was half expecting a reference to their victory over Real Madrid this evening.
I'm really glad that they have pulled themselves out of the recent slump in form to produce a really decent performance tonight. Good on them.

Icasa finally released it's findings on cellphone subsidies and it seems that South African users will be getting shorter contracts...Vodacom is still fighting to keep subsidies saying it encourages people to get new cellphones thus decreasing the digital devide.

My question is? How many people over 35 actually use WAP, POP3, Instant Messaging or any sort of application that requires GPRS/EDGE/3G/HSDPA?

@da wanqsta:Many people could not watch the game due to power failures we've been having in the Cape...many will also miss tonight's game between Chelsea and Real Madrid.

@ brixster,
I presume you meant to say Chelsea v/s Barcelona tonight, as Real obviously played against Arsenal last night.
WRT the power cuts,my brother works for Eskom in Plett and he's got his hands full with all the power problems that they are experiencing across the region; and the Eskom server has gone haywire as well it seems...

@da wanqsta: Yep, I should've said Barca...my bad.

There seems to be a consensus of opinion that our current problems with power generation stems from the high demand which is as a result of the relative economic boom South Africa has experienced over the last 5-6 years.

While the demand for power has increased, capacity to generate power has not increased. I don't know how this problem will be solved but it needs to be solved quick because we've got a World Cup to host in four years time and we can't build another nuclear power station quick enough.

Premier Rasool said we should try to conserve as much energy as we can and my contribution to lowering the load has been to switch off my geyser while I'm at work.

In answer to that, we may have to look at the general picture. Permit me to ask first, how many people actually have private access to the internet generally via PC? How many people actually own a PC?

Statistics show clearly that there are many more mobiles in use than PCs. My thinking is this, give (and educate) people about internet services on mobile devices and a good proportion will use them, if only when in a real need.

If at the moment, most mobile data users are below 35, it paints a good picture for the future. In another 10 years, some of these people will be 45 - and still be using these things. The demographics will gradually look better, hopefully.

Come to think of it, since I got my first smartphone, the P800, till date, I have stopped using my PC for emails, since I prefer to have it handy. Yet, I have both a desktop and a laptop PC.

Funny thing is that once Vodacom releases a new phone they'll hardly marketing the connectivity features of the handset...instead they'll bundle it with all sorts of "free" goodies to entice new subscribers.

@brix: I wonder why most networks are like that. Back home in Nigeria, the operators are even less enterprising with mobile data. Only gloMobile has done any extensive marketing of its data services. And forget marketing the data features of bundled handsets. They just couldn't be bothered.

@Rhino8: Like all things you'll get used to it...change can be good.
The point of the investigation was that networks had free reign on a captive market...things are changing with number portability coming on stream later this year you'll have more choice.

Like all debates this one doesn't make sense if we're looking at it from the perspective of the networks and those among us who benefit every 20 months with a new cellphone.
The system that supports cellphone subsidies also exploits PAYG users with ridiculous call and data rates. It's not like these users are buying a sim card every second month, networks make a lot off money off them and it's just fair that they share some of them gravy thats been reserved for contract subs.

Eish, the particularly cold snap that we've been exposed to here over the past few days has now yielded some light snow here this morning.Phoned eMonti last night and it seems to be the other extreme at the moment.

There's a new TV series here, also from Uncle Sam's back yard, called Prison Break. It's becoming as popular as 'Lost'. Hopefully it'll soon be aired in SA too.
