so what your saying is the satio will run on symbian v5 until symbian foundation is running and then the satio will jump across to symbian foundation?

If that were to happen then SE would've outdone themselves!

I have doubts though.

Looks cute but still not really a fan though of UI layers on top. This covers HTC's Touchflo and Sense (good and attractive efforts both of them) and SPB (which is brilliant and makes WM halfway usable) and now SE appear to be headed into the same garden. The fundamental problem as I see it is that most have been used to "put lipstick on a pig" i.e. dress up the horror that is the WM UI or differentiate your product when using a generic software platform i.e. HTC Sense and now the layer SE are putting on S60v5, basically there should be no need for them if you have a decent in house software platform. Now maybe the SE one will have been done in a new and more intelligent way and until it's in the wild we can't judge but the problem most of them have (even when they're really well done and indeed better than the underlying s/w) is that as soon as you drop out of the special UI layer e.g. to write a message than the interaction with the UI changes so unless these special layers are written using exactly the same design, icon and UI grammar as the underlying UI the user experience can become very clunky - cue iPhone, this is what Apple understand and execute so well and this is why the punters love to pick them up and just use them. It's why I find WM pretty unusable say writing a text whilst out and about in that you have to focus too much on the software particularly if switching between layers. It seems to me that this is a critical issue because UI seemlessness and software "ergonomics" are critical on touchscreens in the absence of physical buttons (badly organised UI is equivalent of horrid little buttons or hiding them in weird places) and devices which lack it are unpleasant to use.

It is a serious issue for those planning on using shared software platforms - how do you differentiate your product without ruining the UI design language, particularly as the hardware is becoming more identical and the only area to change is the software ? Discuss................

You said it all mate!

@GUCCI

I know of the backward compatibility thing that S60 v5 is to have with the new Symbian Os. The question is does that mean FULL or PARTIAL compatibility? I haven't seen or read about the possibility of upgrading to Symbian from S60 v5, unless I am mistaken of course.

Re-read snoFlake's post, now imagine it being read aloud by Stephen Fry......Uncanny isn't it

Only kidding It's just so nice to read something on here written in an inteligent, eloquent, flowing style

On the subject of Satio, even though I'll be interested to see what people think of it when it's released, I think I may skip it and wait for the Android based offering.

@AD

After using UIQ since the P910i and now with the P1 I needed something that would make me feel at home. That was missing until Android came along. That is where I'm also headed.

@se_dude - Thanks for the video. It seems that the UI is a little bit updated, there is TV button in the media menu, new menu, I'm starting to like it again, despite the S60v5 platform.
