@ das brixmeister,
Those large 'copters must cost a pretty penny or two to lease....not the most frugal on aviation fuel, although they are extremely capable and reliable workhorses.
I presume they use some kind of detachable, massive dispensing 'bucket', judging by those cables dangling from the heli? |

I think the expense is worth it considering the devestation the 2000 fires sowed on the Table Mountain range...that year the helicopters were not used.
That scoop/bucket thingy is quite effective, so effective that a volunteer firefighter ended up in hospital with serious back injuries after he was hit with the equivalent of two tons of water after a helicopter made a drop in Bainskloof near Stellenbosch yesterday.

Is that story of a tourist starting the fire true? Incredible how much devastation it's caused.

Yeah there's absolutely no doubt that it's worth every penny leasing the helicopters, for all manner of reasons. That's not even disputable.
I remember speaking to the in-laws a few weeks ago, when there were apparently severe fires that had ravaged much of the fynbos between Blaauberg and Melkbosstrand.
Damn, seems like eKapa is having a really rough year of it... |

@da krypsta: What's scary is how close homes are to the mountain. For all the view in the world, I'd never want to live high up on the slopes.

Got this statement from Happy Zondi- Cell C's spokesperson in my inbox...thought I'd share with y'all.
---------------------------------------------
CELL C EMBRACES ADVERTISING STANDARD AUTHORITY (ASA) REGULATIONS
[p]We welcome the Advertising Standard Authority (ASA) statement
giving clarity on the implementation date for the new advertising
rules for total costs of cellphone contracts.[/p]
[p]Cell C has been a leader in this regard having decided to self
regulate as soon as the matter was brought to our attention in
October last year.[/p]
[p]We are glad that that the decision ensures that all players in
the industry must follow suite.[/p]
[p]The implementation of this amendment across the industry means
that consumers will now be able to make informed decisions and have
a clear basis for comparison.[/p]
EDIT: Here's a link with more details on a deal reached between the Advertising Standards and the cellphone industry.

Today we attended the MCN Road Bike Show at Alexandra Palace, held annually at the palace in Wood Green, north London.
Although we took the trusty Olympus camera with as usual, I took a few snaps with the Nokia 3230's 1.2mp camera and I am quite amazed how well the pics came out, once I beamed them to my PC and scrutinised them in more detail.
This first pic with the 3230 was of Troy Corser's 2005 World Superbike Championship-winning Suzuki GSX-R1000.
The second is of a road-legal Ducati 999, fully pimped-out and laced with carbon fibre and kevlar here, there and everywhere.
A very fast, expensive superbike, served with generous dollops of bling, topped with go-faster goodies and no bike licence preservatives...
Now for a relatively 'passe' 1.2mp cameraphone (by today's standards), I am really quite impressed with how the pics came out.

Those bikes look fine, mate. lol, all that bling makes my mouth water! Brix, i hear you- the view may be great, but the risk involved is scary. No amount of insurance money can ever make up for the trauma involved in surviving such devastation.

Can't believe how long it's taken for Nokia to release the 3230's replacement...some posters on gsmarena hinted that initial prototypes came out riddled with bugs.
