WM7 will not just be resource hungry, but it will be optimized to work efficiently on a reasonable amount of ram, cpu and stuff..

Also , vista basic itself runs ok on 256 mb ram.

So any reviews of x1i out(which dont require translations)?

sorry but i don't believe this my friend has a neo pentium D based laptop with 384Mb ram and it runs vista basic like snail. (the moment i installed netbeans 6.1 there the whole laptop ended up miserably slow)

imho WM7 will run fine with 256MB even. WM6.1 will run fine with 128MB, and I really don't expect WM7 will be so much more memory hungry that it will need more than 256MB.

However where the extra memory will be useful on WM7 is if you are a performance junkie and use the platform to it's full extent. While you will work hard to uitilise more than 256MB using wm6.1, you wil be able to hit this ceiling a lot sooner with WM7.

I expect that when WM7 comes out memory in the higher end of WM phones will jump from 256MB to 512MB (not 384MB). So I don't think the extra memory is to allow for WM7. Personally I expect it will be to make the panels work more efficiently.

RAM is where everything happen. When an App runs the system MOVES all the necessary stuff into RAM like programs to be executed and data, tables etc There is where all is manipulated

If the system runs out of RAM it should not hang and lockup what it does is it moves stuff out RAM and brings what it needs into RAM and when is done then it has to bring back the stuff that was moved out before.

For instance: There is 1 GB of map data in the microSD for the GPS to use. Obvioulsly it doesn't fit all of it in the RAM. So the system MOVES as much as it fits into RAM. Therefore it will run faster with 384MB than 256 or 128MB because with 384MB the systems doesn't need to access the microSD so often.

To address both points, if the X1 does indeed come with 384MB which I'm pretty sure it does not now. It would not have been done so with a view to upgrading to WM7 as if it was then an accelerometer would have been included too as WM7 will support hand based gestures. It would have been upped for x-panels but it is beyond me why it would need that much if there is 150MB odd RAM free after boot. Having more ram would not make it run any quicker. A faster cpu clock or better 3d chip/drivers would.

Also, yes SE will more than likely not be providing WM7 upgrades but most people comfortable with flashing devices won't be waiting for SE to release an upgrade they will simply do it themselves. At present early builds of WM7 are running on 256MB RAM, so I'm pretty sure 512MB wont; be needed though I will agree it is more than likely that devices around that time will be shipping with 512MB RAM. 384MB ram for WM7 could well be the sweet spot (enough to run OS and sufficient amount of apps).

Moving on to memory addressing in WM6.1. Using the map example, this is wrong. At present gps software will not move as much as it can into ram for faster operation. WM6.1 is not Vista. Authors know they have a finite amount of ram available so only move a certain amount of whatever is required to run the app into ram. Thus having 256mb or 384mb ram is NOT going to make gps soft run any faster. If the footprint is designed to use 30MB then it is not going to use anymore if it sees more. Maybe in some years when amount of RAM heavily outstrips software execution or memory addressing are not built on ce foundations but currently no.

The way I see it is this, if you are someone that is very much into tweaking and fixing things then 384Mb would indeed come in very handy and would be very beneficial. On the other hand, if you don;t really like messing around with things too much or are constantly upgrading phones then I wouldn't be too bothered about the X1 not having 384mb ram. There will be something much better come WM7 release time!

Now I have some questions:

1. Where's all the fun panels?

On SE's panelsite, i can only find 8panels, and they're all free.

2. Then, how do I put my own songs as ringtones and messagetones... ?

I can't find another option than to use SE's ringtones.

3. Why can't the media player play mp3 files?

I added some music to the memory stick in a folder I named Music, when I try to open them through the media menu, the screen goes blank. But I can play them in WMP which I don't want to

4. Where does all the files I recieve through bluetooth and so on go?

I can't find them in the phone
I dead people!

Hi all,

Sorry but just what is a commercial prototype isn't that actually a contradiction of terms? There well may be various stages of prototype but they are all pre production and as such not commercial units.

I also don't believe SE for any reason what so ever would be stupid enough to sell any form of prototype as a finished retail unit to a paying customer. Especially not if it's specifications are not as good as a full retail unit, just how do you think the early adopters will feel if they have paid full price for a prototype and everyone else for the same money gets more Ram in theirs?

I would be efffing livid to put it mildly SE really needs to come out and clarify exactly what the position is to their users.

It's just a shame that when it comes to communication with it's users SE is so poor. Sorry but you also can't even really rely in anything in the White paper says either as previously proved if SE suddenly can't deliver what they said they would they just remove it.

Really some one at SE needs to release a statement to clarify the exact position and sooner rather than not all.

Marc

256mb v 384mb ram.....

does it really matter?

256mb is more than enough.

i think its clear its 256mb. going by those who own it already.

and then i maybe its 128mb video ram as mizzle has stated. equalling the 384mb ram certain reps have given us.

Here's my take on it.

I don't believe they would have done it intentionally, but to be quite honest I could see it happening. Either SE shipped the Commercial Prototypes(intended for demo use) in place of the Retail Versions or for some reason the shops decided to sell them.

It does appear to be the case:
-Strong rumors that the Final Retail version would have 384mb; changed since the last whitepaper.
-Shops now admitting that the 256mb version is the Commercial Prototype and that another version is coming out tomorrow; 384mb w/ a new ROM version.

Personally if you have the 256mb one; I'd be taking it back on monday.

Though it'd be nice if SE could actually come out and confirm this one way or the other.

it'd runs fine if you disable all graphics gloss and strip it back to Windows 2000 look alike. Disable services such as system restore, indexing, UAC, security centre, antivirus realtime scanner, etc etc. But I agree netbeans would run like a dog no matter what you do. But netbeans takes a bit of grunt. Most average word/internet/email users would get by fine.

Swedish National Anthem on the qualifier to World Cup 2010 against Portugal. Råsunda Stadium was sold out. Filmed with a Sony Ericsson Xperia X1

my friend already has it but he wont tell me about RAM,but he said

"it is not 256MB RAM and there is no loading between potrait view to landscape view Transition.X1 is already smoother than before. X1 need big RAM because 9 panels is active = you run 9 application at one time...'
