The screen looked good to me and I am fussy. Generally I like Sony displays for their more natural colours and non pentile screens too. And it seemed fluid in operation.
Cheers. Guess I have to go find out what its like for myself. |

One thing I forgot to mention was that for a 5 inch screened phone I found the Z1 smaller than I expected which was a plus I guess. Didn't seem big to me at all

Actually got to play with the Xperia Z1 at the O2 store! today! luckily they had decided not to keep the phone locked up! While I have to admit the phone does feel kinda big especially coming from my mini pro...it definitely wasn't as bad as I expected....fit quite nicely in my pocket and felt relatively comfortable in the hand!
Performancewise absolutely smooth....no lag whatsoever! and the camera is pretty good! took a few photos on it in relatively low light.
The superior auto one in 8mp looked pretty impressive even when I zoomed in. However when I took it in manual at 20mp you could see a bit more noise, which I guess is expected!
Even tried the 3x Clear zoom....and I have to say the zoomed in image wasn't as sharp as one when I didn't zoom in. I guess it works better in bright light at lower ISOs
even got to try pair it with QX10 which O2 are giving away *free* with pre-orders....and the QX10 was quite nice to use..you cant beat real optical zoom! |

The latest samples were excellent
I downsized one of the Z1 samples to 8 mp, and in my opinion it is equal or even better than some 1020 daylight shots, if we look at a 100% 20mp Z1 crop versus the 100% 8mp crop of 1020, it will appear the 1020 is better, but if we put them in equal footing, meaning downsizing Z1's size to 8mp, I'd say it equals or beats the 1020 output in daylight. (anyway this is my opinion, wouldn't want to start flame wars again I wouldn't mind being proved wrong though )
Luminance noise is pretty much gone once Z1's 20mp is downsized to 8mp.
BTW about the screen review differences, I think culprit for that is the brightness, setting the brightness too high might be the reason why some screen looks washed out, mainly because it's too bright. Setting it properly should eliminate that problem easily.

Thanks for sharing pics mate

That's what I said a couple of pages back. Posted downsampled images too. If Sony implements a good algorithm for pixel binning, Z1 could beat 1020. Right now Z1's own 8MP images don't look good, but you take its full sized image and resize it to 5MP on your own, they come out very impressive!
Sony should add a good pixel binning algorithm and add a 5MP mode too. |

The screen seemed absolutely brilliant to me!! bright with great contrast! don't think i noticed any real degradation when viewing from different angles....although cant say I tried viewing from a very far off angle!
for anyone who likes large phones! this phone is a pleasure to use!!

@Kewsvnet
Thanks for the info, it was much appreciated.
To anyone who gets a hands on with a Z1, I' politely like to ask you to check out the display in a little more detail. Off-angle viewing to be precise. Shouldn't be too hard to check. If whites turn yellow-orange, greens turn yellow-green, purple turns pink and black becomes grey, then you know its got poor viewing angles, but this would still be better than the XZ. If contrast is lost, then the screen is as bad as the one on the Z. If colours are perfectly accurate at all angles, then its a great success.
Be honest about it though. |

Great find!
I've posted the following comment as a reply;
Is Z1 capable of 1080p @ 60 fps video recording?
If not, will it be implemented via later software update?
I'll let you guys know if I get a response. |

I think for many people, viewing angles = high quality screen. Personally, as long as it looks amazing straight on and maybe 15-20 degrees to either side, i'm happy. I like my privacy and a phone screen isn't meant for sharing a movie with a massive group. that's why they invented streaming and MHL.
But hey, if people want to pass on an amazing device because they can't view it from 90 degrees that's their call and their loss. who are we to judge?
oh that's right -- we're the internet. we judge everyone!

I don't care for viewing angles either but I have a colleague who loves to share clips. Big viewing angles are quite convenient in that situation . His Arc does great
