I think some people here forget that not everybody is looking for a highend-phone. There are enough people who are looking for an evolution of a phone like kate.

First of all, it would break compatibility with older apps and games. Second, the A2 platform doesn't support VGA screens. Third, would you really prefer a dramatic drop in battery life in favor of the unnoticeable details that a VGA resolution would bring over a QVGA one on a 2.6" screen?

"What's the need?" It's a Cyber-shot phone and therefore it gets camera-centric features regardless of price point? Smile Detection would set it apart from other low-mid phones that don't (therefore you answered your own question)? SE can do what they please? Which answer are you wanting?
