a friend of mine got it for testing. He works for SE (I used to work for Ericsson for more than 5 years). Anyhow, I'm not quite sure that it would be ready for March 06.
The menus looks great, much more "alive" then the P910, the QWERTY is very very nice. Before I held it, just from looking at the pictures, I thought, YUCK... another TRIEO, but no! it's very comfy and readable, even in complete dark. (not like the P910).

The main issue is the new OS. It has a lot of bugs. Just to hive an example, I've tried 14 times to attach a document to an email... the phone simply died on me..

I do not beleive that between today and mid Jan 06 there will be any work done to fix the bugs. Oh yeah, Happy Holidays to all of us

so to cut it short, it looks and feels like a great phone but I doubt if it would be ready by March 06. Allthough SE surpirsed us before...

Happy new year !

Thanks for all the kind words Prom1 .... I have decided to do the full review by answering and adding questions regarding the P990 to the current "Pre-View" so the thread will be changing daily in response to questions and just me adding up the different areas I have reviewed.... Next thing I'm putting up is the "Business Card Scanner Application" .... the screen shots of the application and its process of taking a photo of a business card and scanning that into your "Contacts" data base on the P990i

A photo for you all.... the P990i is most attractive to me without the "Phone KeyPad"..... simply a very beautiful and elegant device... SE did a great job on design and materials....

Dude, Bengal, that Scan Business Card app is incredible! If thats a sign of prospective apps to come then I'd leave the Series60 camp in a heartbeat!

1 wish Persistent Storage/Memory support in Symbian would be a nice thing.

I'm on the fence of true usuability with the P990i's qwerty keypad to do the WiFi settings that have been updated on your site, and also between no WiFi 802.11g >> b is still much cheaper & faster than GPRS/3G but I'd like G as some networks that I could siphon off of while mobile could limit me from even connecting because I'm not 802.11g compatible. <<

If I can get through menus and skip entry fields and surf and download and make attachments without using the stylus than I'm coming back to the SE camp!

Thanks for the tutorial on keyboard removal, Bengal MANY MANY P910 faithfuls will appreciate it.

Heck just goto the site and enjoy; you might find more on that site you like besides cellular phones.

Hey Prom1,,,, Merry Christmas!! Well, my boggest complaint about Symbian UIQ was its lack of robustness compared to Windows Mobile... although the new 3.0 version is still being tweaked.... its obvious that it is gonna be more capable of running sophisticated code and produce some very nice eye candy for those apps...

I really am gonna have to classify it as still being out of the ball park when it comes to the power of mobile 2005 .... but only when using a device such as a Universal which has a processor capable of running Mobile 2005 properly.. The WiZard type devices are just frustrating when trying to run a sophisticated app such as Co-Piolt 6 on it... the only hardcore app currently available for Windows Mobile 2005 OS devices that I'm aware of on the market.

Truth is, for most users desiring a small form factor as well as the best camera/phone combination..superior construction and Entertainment Support (MP3 playback) with a fantastic phone... the P990i is gonna be a Huge Hot Hit!! Order it now!! I don't think any one especially SE Fans will be disappointed! I absolutely Love Mine!

As for Dave Evans, there is a ton of information on him in my Lounge if your interested in knowing about him.. but basically he is just a 60+ year-old man who proves that wisdom does not necessarily come with age... hehe...

At the current time there are no applications available to me for the new UIQ 3.0 Operating System other than the firmware embedded "Business Card Scanner" application. I tried loading Opera's current browser as well as movies encoded on PVAuthor & Smartmovie with errors being received on installation and playback.

Until new software is developed or a firmware update allowing backwards compatibility with the old UIQ OS arrives..... I can't do any further review of software on the device

We will see what state the P990 lunch is at the big show in Germany in Spring in Hannover. I forgot the name on it.

@bengal: can I see a movie taken with p990? Even if it's 5 seconds long Post a link, please. Does p990 use autofocus while recording video? Or is it possible to manual focus when recording?
Thanks!

Movies will be available on my site in the downloads section for you to review.... Should be up sometime later this week..

P990 during video capture uses auto focus...no manual focus that I can find. Full screen shots of the P990's Camera/Video settings will be posted in the on-going review as well.

Really looking forward to the P990 but the massive problem for me is that you cannot at the moment use existing P9xx software. People with TomTom etc will not want to switch to a phone that will be very basic in comparrison to their P910i at the start.

People that have also spent several hundred pounds on TomTom software will not want to get a P990 knowing they will have to fork out the money again. SE shouhld really review this before the final release.
