imho WM7 will run fine with 256MB even. WM6.1 will run fine with 128MB, and I really don't expect WM7 will be so much more memory hungry that it will need more than 256MB.
However where the extra memory will be useful on WM7 is if you are a performance junkie and use the platform to it's full extent. While you will work hard to uitilise more than 256MB using wm6.1, you wil be able to hit this ceiling a lot sooner with WM7.
I expect that when WM7 comes out memory in the higher end of WM phones will jump from 256MB to 512MB (not 384MB). So I don't think the extra memory is to allow for WM7. Personally I expect it will be to make the panels work more efficiently.

What feature(s) in WM7 will require such huge amounts of memory?
@Indrawan:
I'm a skeptic, but your info is changing my pessimism Hope it's true.

Personally, I think Humble will be back. He's just frustrated at waiting for the X1. Now he's going to wait for another device that isn't released yet Seems irrational to me. Should I have begged him to stay?

What makes any of you think that SE will provide an upgrade to WM7? There is absolutely no way that is going to happen. I cannot think of any example that suggests that they would. Please prove me wrong, because I would love them to provide an upgrade path to WM7 - so by all means, prove me wrong - but don't just say I'm wrong, because all evidence, all common sense - suggests that there is no way SE will provide an upgrade. I mean, really - why would they? It will make them much more money if they refuse to, and instead tell you to buy their next phone that comes with WM7. |

Hi Max_wedge,
Good points, I agree with all your hunchs. let me add a few comments to it.
The fact is that we don't know EXACTLY how much RAM is needed for Xperia to run "fine" so even less for an unkown WM 7. We don't even know what "fine" is.
After reading so many posts of people wandering about 256 384 "is needed", "not needed", "I don't care" I'm angry" "It's enough" and on and on
What people really need to know here is that MORE is BETTER Today and but important tomorrow.
RAM is where everything happen. When an App runs the system MOVES all the necessary stuff into RAM like programs to be executed and data, tables etc There is where all is manipulated
If the system runs out of RAM it should not hang and lockup what it does is it moves stuff out RAM and brings what it needs into RAM and when is done then it has to bring back the stuff that was moved out before.
For instance: There is 1 GB of map data in the microSD for the GPS to use. Obvioulsly it doesn't fit all of it in the RAM. So the system MOVES as much as it fits into RAM. Therefore it will run faster with 384MB than 256 or 128MB because with 384MB the systems doesn't need to access the microSD so often.
If we add multitasking to this scenario the amount or READS & MOVES are dramatically increased and performance suffer to a crawl.
Bottom line if you can get 384 on the Xperia FIGHT! for it. And you don't be sorry later.

Well, you could buy their next phone that comes with WM7 or you could buy the X1 that everyone's fawning over and upgrade it to WM7. Either way, SE makes money on the sale of a device. Then, there are those with the X1 who are going to upgrade to "X2" regardless.
At this point in the game, I think it is wise for Microsoft to have their OS work on as many devices as possible--not just limit themselves to unknown next-gen devices.

Even though Se won't let us upgrade to WM7,we can still upgrade X1 with the help of WM community that hacks WM phones and PDA. So that's not really a problem(hope so )

this is a _mobile_ device, with a _mobile_ OS. It doesn't need to have gigabytes of RAM or gigahertz processors, high-end video cards, etc. It is _mobile_. If you need the power of a desktop computer, buy a laptop. Think again your needs. |

Norti,
This is the day of convergent devices, mate.
People dont want to carry e.g. a phone, a seperate mp3 player, a seperate camera, and we are getting close to the point where they dont want to carry a laptop, or netbook.
The luxury is in having a single device that will manage many of the things that that collection of devices will do, AND fit into your pocket, or handbag.
So, all that RAM and those high speed processors are now, not essential, but becoming necessary.
Stay happy.

Buying a laptop is not a solution, especially if you want a computer to fit in your pocket. If you haven't noticed, this is the trend, and the company that could provide this solution will be successful. This is, of course if the company wants to be ahead of the competitors instead of worrying about what's the 'norm'.

SE have called this device "Xperia" for a reason. They want the hardware and software to be a great experience. From intial reviews the hardware is considered to be 'special' (slide mechanism and quality of screen)- so 50% of the objective has been achieved. We know that WM6.1 is probably not the most effcient OS there is. So SE have done what they can - which I think explains the choice od RAM. I assume their tests show that that much RAM is needed for video and music. Those with the P990s will remember how poor the experience was with the RAM issue

A Samsung i900 with 128Mb runs video very well. video and audio playing does not require large amounts of ram to work smoothly. it's active panels (as max said) that consume most of the ram real estates.

I'm not saying it will need 512MB, just that I expect WM devices will double memory as they often have in the past (32/64/128/256 etc). So by the time WM7 comes out, 256MB will be benchline and 512MB will be high end.
Then benchline will double to 512MB, and high end will be 1GB now that's what I'm talkin' 'bout baby

Since when do we all know WM 6.1 is not the most efficient OS? Honestly it runs fine on the HTC Touch Dual with 128mb. My i780 runs video and music with ease, it's also 128mb. It's only WM6.0, but there isn't such a significant difference between 6.0 and 6.1 in terms of performance.
256mb is more than enough, 384mb is a bucketload.

1Gb for a WM device! couple it with the 1Ghz qualcomm snapdragon CPU and that kicks ass
