'boet' is a more informal, slang derivation form the word 'broer',which literally means 'brother',but used as an Afrikaans (derived from Dutch) equivalent to the English 'bro', ie. as in referring to a mate.

Ja well no fine...
Haven't heard that for a while. Also brings back distant memories of that SA tv 'comedy' show by the same name in the mid 80's... |

Damn, the only tv memories I have of the 80s are American shows and the very bad shows they had on TV2.

@brix and amawanqa: Thanks boet (BTW, what's the plural?) for the lingua lessons.??Talking of TV, the only SA TV programmes I have ever watched are "Generations" and "People of the South". Oh, plus one or two movies.

That's the most ridiculous name for a television station...it could only be the SABC back in the 90s.
@AYA: To be honest I'm not sure what would be the plural for boet as the word is always used in a singular context...I suppose you could say(in Afrikaans) my brasse which would have a similiar meaning to boet but somehow it just doesn't sound right.
There are lots of unspoken rules when it comes to language usage even amongst the underclass.
In (black) township slang you could also refer to your close male friends as impintji's zam which literally means "my soldiers/comrades".

@ Kryptik,
Eish, you've sent me down Memory Lane again...that bloody brown pterodactyl puppet with black, tatty wings...Knersis.
Knersis's delightful dentures all hanging up on the washing line, while he prepares 'brediesop' and its final 'ingredient':Oscar die Haas.
Not to be confused with 'Haas Das', of course...
Alpha 1999 was dubbed, I think.
@ brix,
TV2...were you ever exposed to 'Ekhaya Labantwana' way back then? |

@da wanqsta: Damn right, I was exposed to that duck character each afternoon when I came back from school. Favourite tv shows from the 80s were definitely Robotech, the story was quite complex for animated series at the time and I thought this ish is deep.
Funny thing is that most "black" dramas from the 80s were written by white guys...it was almost like transplanting Dallas to a township settings, which as we all know was ridiculous.

@ da brixsta,
Ah, Robotech. You summed it up pretty well.
The relentless large Zentraedi, the complex love and devotion of Rick for his dreamgirl Lynn Minmay and the more stable, mature Lisa, life on the SDF-1, the death of Roy Fokker and the influence it had on the characters, Max falling for the top Zentraedi pilot-babe, arrogant Kyron...oh hell, why do I remember all this but forget stuff on today's shopping list?!
Then there was the second series, with the cult-type Invid invaders and the cultivation of Protoculture, bioroids...I'd better stop this nostalgic tangent...I've gotta go collect the Wanqmobile from the local grease monkeys.
You may want to check out http://www.robotech.com/ , even if it's just for nostalgic purposes...

@da wanqsta: Damn bro, it's almost 20 years and you remember the whole plot outline, you should be at one of their conventions
Can anyone remember "Monkey"? It was a Japanese show about the adventures of two(?) guys travelling through China...the show was dubbed into English and was broadcast around 1984-85 on SABC.
Another one of my favs from the 80s is Agter Elke Man, for the first time I saw poor white people depicted on screen...I always thought we were the only ones who suffered poverty. Steve Hodmeyer was absolutely trashy...more on him later.

@ brix,
LOL,probably, but I really cannot see myself ever mixing it with totally infatuated Über-geeks at conventions, sci-fi or other.
BTW, nice pic of you at the Waterfront in the Nigerian forum. |

@da wanqsta: About that pic, I strictly representing for the metrosexuals in the house:grin: On serious note, last night I picked up a tummy bug while bar hopping on Long Street...right now I feel like my tummy's got a mind of it's own.

@Brix, it was Monkey Magic, boet. @AYA, the word "boet" is really very broad in definition, as stated. It can be used in many contexts, even insultingly at times. Which word would be used in Nigeria in the same context?
