@Angel: what happened to your T610? I hope its not the dual SIM adapter that caused the damage?

No its not the dual sim, it fell on the floor and shifted the antenna, so i started having poor reception. I hope they finish the repairs today, cos am missing my phone.

@AYA: Do u think it'll b feasible for ISPs/IT companies in collaboration with the Universities to provide Wi-fi (not necessarily free) hotspots/access points in Nigerian campuses?

I think that would be a very good idea, if only our IT/ISP companies are not profit crazy. The concentration of mobile internet users in Nigerian universities is not enough to attract such investments, I see a situation where these companies would prefer to create hot spots around the airports, hotels, and such high traffic areas where more users will benefit from them, which in turn will mean more accruable revenue.

@mikkyroy: Like amby said, its not likely to be profitable for the ISPs. I am not certain how many university lecturers and students in say UNILAG who have Wi-fi-enabled laptops and gadgets like the Nokia Communicators and Pocket PCs....

But, hotspots are springing up around Lagos and Abuja in particular. Companies like Accelon, SwiftTalk and co are pushing hard to deploy. Its in all probability just a matter of time...

@mikky: Excellent solution there! Now, that can be replicated across the entire campus. And that's giving me an idea already.

Talking of WiFi in SA it has exploded to an extent that you're likely find yourself enjoying wireless broadband if you're in a high density area.
It's available in coffee shops, all airports and some neighbourhoods. WiFi, for the most part, is not free though you either have to be a subscriber to an ISP(Mweb) or pay for a "token" that gives you airtime on the net.
BTW mario2002 was boasting that he's got a 1.1Mb ADSL connection

@brix: You almost make me want to relocate to SA. I am looking forward to WLAN becoming that available here. 1.1mb connection? If its as fast as it has been tagged, that's the kind of speed I want

The former rather than the latter is your best option.

1.1mb internet connection speed? is that really feasible? I'll be the happiest man on Esato if my MTN can deliver 5kb constant speed.
I'm that easy to please.

While I'm on the topic of MTN connection speeds, has anyone noticed that MTN has become extremely slow especially when using a pc-modem setup? I'm clocking b/w 9b/sec and 350b/sec.

@amby: Not only is MTN GPRS rather slow now, it times out twice every second! Absolutely unusable for my purposes - and for most people's, IMO. They cannot even get GPRS to work well, and they are talking of 3G in 2006!

@Amby MTN vanished last night for me. But I found out that if U have slow speeds, U can disconnect and reconnect to get a new ip address that is "faster". So I just check how fast it is loading.... and then decide to recconect or let it be. The "Client IP address" keeps changing.

Other errors and solutions: When it says "Hardware Failure" consistently, try to re-install the modem. Worked for me after days of frustration.

When it says "Cannot Assign ip address", reduce the modem speed from 115kb to 57kb. I also did that to start getting connected after days of wahala.

I also tried dialup with Glo. Even though I couldn't get access, I noticed how fast it was in dialling and connecting to the remote computer.... unlike MTN.

Vmobile GPRS does not cover my area! Too bad for me.
