that's horrible news geoffxx..
hopefully you can get a good replacement screen and it'll be good as new. with the waterproofing, personally, i would be hesitant to ever expose it to any real amount of water ever again, even after repairing it myself.
good luck with that.. shame you don't have insurance or something.
screen assembly ordered, the supplier has assured me it is a genuine OEM Sony Z1 LCD, cost was 140GBP - we shall see, I'll be returning it if it's not as good as my original, no teardown videos yet on the net but from what I've seen the Z1 looks easier to strip down than the Z even though it's 3 layer and Z is only two
Pity I didn't have some way to record the replacement process |

Hi can anyone who has updates their Z1 to 4.3 confirm weather the video recording had a bump upto 60fps as this was mentioned randomuser a while back. I know Sony did'nt mention it in their press release they just said "performance updates and bug fixes".

Hey XperiaJunkie
Actually it was a case of a misunderstanding. A developer had posted in the 4.3 update thread on xda about 1080p@60 fps. It was only later he clarified that it was something he was working on and nothing to do with Sony official firmware.
So with this firmware video recording remains 1080p @ 30 fps as before.
1080p @ 60 fps is not expected to be added in 4.4 either.

TBH 60fps is not something I would want on my phone, 30fps is more than enough, it would double the size of recorded video files for little noticeable gain |

One day has passed and I can conclude that the battery life of my Z1 has improved. With upgrade, I now reached 6 hours of screen on time with the same brightness settings since 4.2, with still having 20% battery life and X-reality turned on.
On 4.2, the maximum I've reached was around 5 hours drained. Same brightness setting but X-reality turned off. Dunno if that's only mine. |

yah. i read the sony blog.. if there was any real changes to the camera, i'm SURE they would mention it considering Z1 is fairly camera centric. they wouldn't miss out on an opportunity to brag that they improved it.
as has been reported by those who have updated.. seems like there isn't really anything worthwhile in this update. i suppose i'll just enjoy the improved performance (if i can even notice anything) and hopefully even better battery life than I already have.
Here's hoping there's another camera centric update coming in the near future!
perhaps they are waiting for 4.4 and the supposed camera updates that google is rolling out...or the sony camera division was against any further upgrades to the camera. |

I could be wrong here but I get the impression there is less noise from the camera after update - things seem clearer and sharper, don't have any like for like shots to compare but it does seem to have improved |

I think auto mode does looks a bit less noisy maybe they up the ISO for auto mode. Thought file size is still small, compression is still too aggressive. |

no update here yet either..
@ascariss - perhaps. that would suck though since the image quality does not live up to the hardware potential yet.. at least in my opinion. by no means is the IQ terrible, but for the hardware in the Z1, i think it could be better.
i wish they would give a move to SD option for apps! my games take up so much space at nearly a gig or more each. :/

Yes. After the upgrade, camera focusing and saving does seem faster! For those of you who tried Superior Auto, I recommend you guys to switch to Manual mode. it takes better pictures than Superior auto. (You can try snapping the same area using superior auto and manual, and compare noises. Manual will take pictures with lesser noise.) And yes, under under sound enhancement settings, it does stop at there. No preset function. Most likely they will fix this glitch.
Photo wise, they seem to be sharper at corners, as tested by Taiwanese / Chinese Z1 forum members:

This is a minor adjustments but it's really useful , you can now adjust auto brightness from the taskbar ,so it's not necessary to go to the screen settings anymore xD

I really hope Google can add RAW format as early as the next version of android, makes the crappy compression from sony irrelevant if the Z1 get that update. Seriously, like Sony just don't get it it or what? They need to pull their head out of their ass and admit that their image processing is not doing the job and holding back on the quality of all the photos taken by the Z1. With Z1 camera specs, its suppose to blow all the android competitors away, not even trying to compete them. Right now its almost like a 50/50 chance or you have to do some sort of trick to get better photos than others, it it wasnt for 20MP mode, this phone shouldn't even be consider a camera centric phone. What ZOMG mentioned earlier that 4.3.1 for Z1 is the one that brings the new compression for jpeg, not sure if this is the one or we will ever see it. Or it could go directly to 4.4 at this point.

missing features like call recording from prototype software is still missing. |
