Haha, all evidence stacked up and he/she still doesn't believe it. He doesn't have a prototype since the IMEI starts with 35. He has the retail version, and it "only" has 256MB of RAM, just like my own prototype.

That's amazing. 256mb RAM is more than likely to be enough even for a hardcore user, but now people are dissapointed. SE should put a stop to these rumours (they appear to be rumours) as soon as they started and everybody would be happy. Why is a bad scent always following SE phones?

And perhaps wanting to believe it's 384mb doesn't make it the truth either

Luckily I'm not stating its either.

The 384MB RAM is not a rumour. SE confirmed it on the official blog. If the retail version's RAM is not 384MB then it's a lie.

And the SE X1 official webcast also confirmed the 384MB RAM:

Fascinating really. SE appear to have stoked up this expectation themselves, and are now failing to live up to it, despite this amount of RAM never being necessary in the first place.

There's been a cockup somewhere, but is it in the marketing (in which case it's a big FAIL) or just the initial distribution of finished units? Time will tell...

Still hard to believe the X1 ever needed 384mb RAM, especially since none of those with 256mb are reporting any problems. So if it is included, why - and if it isn't, what the marketing people thinking?

I have read the remark made by tregba: Touch pro comes with 288mb RAM, but he can only see 201mb. Maybe it's the same thing here. X1 may have 384mb RAM, but it's only 256mb seeable and available to the user.

Where is the 128MB RAM? for video? I don't think a PPC need that amount RAM for video. PPC is not PC.

You know Nvida Gofore5500 only has 8MB video memory.

I don't know where it is. I am just saying people with retail version and SE might both be right.

No, two different things here. RAM is listed by HTC under device info as 288MB (gimmick), although only 201mb is useable by the OS. The Xperia is listed as 256MB (even though it has just as much ram as the Touch Pro (288MB) under device info as pictured by killmaster9 meaning that around the same amount is available for the OS as the HTC.

If it had 384MB RAM then it would have been listed as such, at thew very worse device info would have reported post 300MB ram as there is no way there is vram of above 64MB!

As Boiing states 256MB is sufficient enough; the importance of 384MB only becomes apparent when WM7 is released but then how many of us are actually going to still be using the X1 come Q3 '09 or even want to flash WM7 to it in a cumbersome manner as I'm pretty sure SE won;t be providing OS upgrades for it! Right now, I'd be more concerned about good graphics drivers being present to make use of the hardware acceleration than an increase in ram!

Hey guys, just signed up on the forums because I'm a Canadian who's been waiting for (what appears to be) a lifetime for the X1. I know that this thread has recently been focusing on the amount of RAM in the X1, however I agree with tregba and Boiing when they say that 256mb is still a poop-load of RAM which shouldn't cause any problems. Hell, my HTC Uni only has 64mb! 19mb which is available after a soft reset! Optimized video acceleration drivers is probably what we need most here.

Anyways, I wanted to pick your minds about which exact 3G bands the phone supports. I know that for GSM voice, both the X1a and X1i are quad-band, however the difference exists in the Network Data Access. In Canada, our biggest (and ONLY) GSM provider is Rogers/Fido. They run their 3G network on the 850 and 1900mhz bands (although rumours have it that it will be stopped on the 1900 band, and remain only on the 850). This is why it is crucial for me to decide whether I want the X1i or X1a.

However just recently I have been reading the xda-developers.com forums, and participated in a post which was examining Sony Ericsson's own official website for updated specs. People are now claiming that the X1 UK site (X1i) now has had the 850mhz 3G band added in place of the 900mhz. I was under the impression that EU needed the 900mhz band for their 3G.

I'm just really confused now about the 3G network band support on both the X1i and X1a. It's critical for me to choose the right one since I've already pre-purchased through Expansys Canada, and if the X1i supported 850/1900mhz 3G, then I would go with that because of no loss in video encoding.

Anyways, I apologize if my question has been covered elsewhere in this post, as I didn't have time to root through 300+ posts. For the record, here's a link to the xda-dev thread which discusses the (possibly) changed 3G network bands:

http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=434199

Thanks in advance for all of your input everyone!

@phoric

Could you please tell us something about your X1 performance i.e. answer some of our previous questions. I am more than eager to hear about it.

Regarding RAM I am now sure it is 256 and no X1 will show more, but lets see. Anyway it is the most interesting thread at the moment with nice people participating
