@da wanqsta: That's beautiful. I'd definitely part with the money. Seems like O2 are the best when it comes to killer PAYG deals.

Guys, my buddy in Singapore has just hooked his pc up with wireless, got his router set up, etc. His question is this- how accessible is his network to others, given the fact that he lives in an apartment complex, and is there any way of securing things? Any input would be appreciated.

@ Kryptik,
I can't say I'm a fundi regarding all things broadband and router, thus can only speak of my (limited) own experiences, even though I have these items myself.
The router should have a range of close to 100m,but with all the factors like large amount of partitions and apartment walls etc.,this is bound to reduce the radius somewhat.
Also, anyone trying to access the broadband internet would surely need to know all the proxy settings for both the specific router and ISP broadband details, apart from having the obvious USB receiver.
Lastly, some routers, like our Netgear one, have an integrated double firewall as well.
Sorry if this info doesn't help much, but maybe you can pick the brains of some local tech-heads/broadband boffins at http://mybroadband.co.za/vb/

Was travelling through the Karoo all of last night and this morning and have to say that Vodacom's GPRS coverage is still top notch- except for a small patch outside De Doorns/Worcester/Hex River Valley where the signal went bust.
It certainly feels good being back in the Mother City.

Meanwhile, it's just started bloody snowing here!
Damn, the weather report was actually right.....nearly a white Christmas.
@ Kryptik,
No problem, glad I could be of some help.

Now it's really icey as this lot is clearing up and starting to thaw out...taken half an hour ago,out the front door.
_______________
BTW,that last wicket stand by Australia, for over 100 runs, was so frustrating to watch...hopefully the Proteas can bat out the full day tomorrow.

@da wanqsta: Judging by the 7-series Beemer in the background can we take it that you live in a larney neighbourhood?
I didn't get time to watch the cricket but South Africa are doing ok...it's cricket afterall.
I've got faith that they can endure the onslaught from Warne & Co and put up a 150+ run advantage...Australia's middle order still messed up at a crucial time.

@ brix,
Without trying to sound too biased, the suburb is one of the nicest in east London, with a few nice parks closeby and other decent local amenities; not your average row-upon-row of Victorian terraced houses.
I wouldn't say it's an overly affluent area, but cars, including more luxury saloons, are generally much more affordable to the average middle class worker than back home.
The great big search for our own abode begins in earnest from tomorrow, when the estate agents re-open.
We plan to establish Wanqa's World in neighbouring Essex's Grays/ Chafford Hundred area, which is quite picturesque and far less urbanised, yet still easy enough to commute into London.
We get a decent grant from the Local Authority as we fall into the Key Worker Living scheme, but it's still gonna be massive moola for a really nice place in a really nice area.
Location,location,location...that's the motto of estate agents all around the world, it seems.

I am back to work :-( only to find that the state ambulance services in our municipality are striking once again. Twice the local shack dwellers gathered in numbers and wanted to 'visit' the local mayor himself living in a 5 bedroom house.Twice we (the police) manage to turn them back (not that I really wanted to given their miserable situation) on the last occasion we let the police helicopter come from PE to scare them of (and it worked) Now I enjoy flying and managed to get some nice video shots :-) they want to gather on the 1 once again and we already organized the chopper. I am thinking to encode some video in wmp format and put it up for public viewing on my home page or blog. What is remarkable - everyone is quiet about all this albeit for different reasons. The politicians (black), the local business man (white) and the police. After all no one wants to 'scare' the tourists or any negative publicity about the beautifull and quiet Jeffreys Bay :-(

@mario2002: Seems like all the politicians are on holiday at this time of year..how can you tell? Well I don't know when was the last time I heard anything about the Zuma rape scandal or plots within to ANC to seize power.
Back on topic: I discovered that expansys have a South African store...and wait for this the prices are cheap...everything is in Rand.
Damn, why don't these guys advertise? I'll browse through and see what sort of bargains they've got.

Hey everyone, merry xmas etc.
@Brix: I know the xpansys store thingy... my dad ordered ... I think Voip phones, etc. ... 2 days later they told (email) us that they can't ship the products to SA(the products was from the UK) and told we should get couriers, which they said is not guaranteed, we had family there get it for us. First impression wasn't that good... but maybe they've changed.. etc. but I know they have good specials and discounts there.

@slssls: Merry Christmas bro. On the surface though it seems cheap. I might just buy my next phone from them if they guarentee that they'll be able to ship it out to the farthest corner of Africa.

A pity that expansys doesn't seem to have a store as such in SA; as it just seems to be almost 100% identical to the UK site except for the SA flag in the logo, price in Rands and no 'deal of the day' section.
The contact address, phone numbers etc. are all the Manchester UK office details.
What would they charge for postage? I doubt they would use conventional postage. I've tried to send many things in the post to SA and every time the post office here will only cover/guarantee the parcel whilst still in the UK....
I could be wrong, but the reason it may be courier-only to SA is probably due to the continent's rather 'unreliable' postal service...I know this is indeed the case with several UK shops that I do business with.
If it is up to the client to organise the courier etc, then I wonder what the likes of DHL, TNT etc. would charge for door-to-door delivery...including customs/import duties and surcharges.
Please don't get me wrong; I would be thrilled IF they actually had a secure SA office for SA people to do business with, still at those prices.
Maybe this is a pre-cursor that they will have/or are planning to have a local store in the near future; I certainly hope so... |
