Xperia owners are like Mitsubishi Evo drivers. We think we have the performance and looks until you see that BMW 330 or Audi S5 pull up beside you. You beat them both in a drag race but it's a hollow victory because your car looks like garbage next to them. The stubborn ones will get go faster stripes painted on while the others wait and pray for a nice design to come out.
Are people not concerned that everyone is pulling out fantastic looking phones overnight while we will have to wait 2 or 3 years to get past ambient flow. Then it's this dual camera. It'll be max 10 to 15% better than the XZ2 for daytime shots and max 20 to 25% for night shots. You're only seeing XZ2P compared to the XZ1 or XZ, no comparison to the XZ2 so far. I'd rather have single camera in a small and thin device rather than compromise all design to take night shots. I will excuse the XZ2 because its well proportioned but the Compact and Premium look like poo. I can guarantee that every manufacturer will have comparable camera phones within 6 months in much sleeker packages.
The one and only reason I have stuck with Sony is the Compact range. Everything I wrote is truth and Sony need to be harassed until they catch up and stop dicking about like cutting the headphone jack when there's enough space to add 4 of them in those fat bodies.

Even worse, you pull up one day next to a Nissan GTR or a Mercedes C63 and get roasted on the drag race too. Sony needs to either bump up their investment in smartphones and really try to compete, or get smart with their investment. I've been saying for years they need to reduce their portfolio down to maximum 3 phones released once a year. A small, medium and large version of the same thing and make that one phone TOP quality. |

Hahaha xd so true. I mean look at Huawei P20 Pro, 3 rear cameras, 4,000mah battery, decent from camera, small bezels, and a bigger screen and look at the proportions compared to the monstrosity that is the XZ2 Premium: Link text...
By the way, does Sony Mobile publish their R&D spending? I guess the figure is not so straight forward as for other OEMs as they lean on R&D from sensor and display divisions etc... they don't seem to be short on money: Link text... yet they still seem to be making cuts in mobile sector rather than investing in it. |

Yes, the phone is ugly.
But I take an ugly phone like XZ2p over a phone with notch or speaker beside usb.
Honestly I doubt Nex S and Find X will last long.
I remember many ppl got excited by LG G5. All those stuff to attach.
But phone was far from being tough. All that opening and closing could easily damage the device.
The unit of Androidpit was ugly already.
It is easy to copy Nex S. All they have to do is giving up on FRONT SPEAKERS AND IP68.
Also it's pretty easy to see that Nex and Find are very fragile.
First time I saw S6 Edge I got mesmerized by its beauty.
First time I had it on me I got annoyed by how incovenient dual edge screen feels.
Like a wet soap.
Sales of S7e were just couple millions better than S7, probably due to size.
Than Sammy kills flat version, sales of s8/s8+ are worse. Same for s9 duo.
S4 still is the champion of android history. More than 80 million units.
Cheap plastic, slow Touchwiz, midrange CPU and tiny battery.
I bet Sony staff considers a lot of situations.
When Sony had Z2 and Z3 there were not that many OEMs. Good sales were 100% guaranteed. Now we have tons of companies.
Most of ppl dont read about tech. They will see two phones and check screen size, battery size, cameras resolutions.
A low-mid class costumer from India goes to downtown and sees Redmi 5 and XA2.
Redmi 5 Plus has bigger screen and battery than XA2. And costs half.
This is what he/she is going to care. Not if XA2 has Triluminous, Qnovo, better updates, better camera and stronger cpu.
This costumer probably believes both are pretty similar, so why would he/she pay 300 if the other costs 160?
Main point is ... Sony doesnt try to tell you why you should pick XA2 over Redmi 5+.
P20 /Pro are great just for photos. Older cpu, video quality is bad with low bitrate ( no 1080p 60, no EIS for 4K).
Speakers are loud but far from great. Huawei is awful with updates.
The devices with LCD dont have great one.
I think sales reached 10 million units already.
Xz2p, G7, U12 and Pixel 3 XL wont.. Maybe only together.

While I think you guys bring up fair points, the experience of owning a smartphone isn't strictly about looks. If I was to go out and buy the new Vevo or Oppo, then I would wager my user experience won't be as good as if I went out and bought XZ2/XZ2P. First of all, software is atrocious on those things, no security updates, and I am not sure how those manufacturers are with OS updates. HDR support from apps such as Netflix and Amazon is also not guaranteed on them.
Then you look at the performance - Sony smartphones are some of the smoothest on the market to use, only rivaled by Pixel phones. Screens are amazing, AMOLED 1080p panels like the one on OP6 aren't as sharp due to pentile configuration. Not sure why many write off the new vibration motor as a gimmick, because the haptic feedback on XZ2 was amazing when I tried it in store, no other Android phone can offer something similar, though iPhone is still by far the best.
In my opinion, Xperia flagships are usually a very attractive package, and user experience is one of the best. I was pretty happy to get Oreo on my XZ in November 2018, while S7, the phone that came out the same year as XZ, received Oreo in May 2018. All in all, if you want clean software, smooth performance, excellent screen, dual speakers and maybe one of the best cameras on XZ2P (admittedly, there is such expectation every generation, and so far it hasn't materialized), it's hard to say that competitors are that much better. I agree though, those phones with insane STB ratios look |

Sony should take note from them, unless they want to be defunct by 2020.
I'm sorry to this Alvin, perhaps I would think otherwise about it
This is their last pull to the smartphone market from these duo Chinese
I don't know how do we expect company with really slim profit hence high volume
to keep churning out this kind of devices year in and year out after this
unless BBK their parent company has fund from other venture like Xiaomi
As for Sony, until something else is ready to replace smartphone which not likely before 2022
it'll stay here and there although maybe not competent in ultra premium or so cutting edge market.

I agree with other people here.
Sony should release premium regular and compact version of the same phone.
With 2 releases an year.
Every company has a 6 month upgrade cycle.
They simply have different names
For samsung it is note and s series
For lg v and g series etc |

XZ2 Premium release date for my country has been postponed until August...
Such dangerous decision from the HQ...

Agreed to John Smith. Maybe those phones have attractibe designs but that's it. Software-wise, along with features as simple as vibration motor, camera (say what you want, but this is true as I know how XZ2's camera performs), display, battery and speed optimisation, and firmware updates.
But the thing is, people are also looking for bezel-less design these days. No matter what XZ2 fans were saying, they should follow the trend to survive. I'm only afraid that they'll keep the same design language next year. Not because I hate the design, I love this design if I'm looking it in person. But it is because I want Sony to have different design language each year, like how they did in 2010, 2011, 2012, and 2013.
I think here's the best launch timeline for them, but they should launch the phones immediately after announcement:
CES: Mid-range (XA Series)
MWC: Medium-sized flagship and a compact (like XZ2 and XZ2c)
IFA: Premium flagship, accompanied by Mid-end and Low-end (XA Plus Series and L Series with L series having a freakin' Snapdragon processor)
They are already showing their dedication towards their own mobile business starting earlier this year (fingerprint scanner on a low-end phone, 4K recording on a mid-end phone, trimmed bezels on all phones except
XA2 Ultra, redesigned camera algorithm, Dual camera, etc). They just need to try harder.
-----------
@HxH: Exactly, but my point is not about profit or how much they sold their products. It is about trying hard. If Sony tried harder, their old fans will come to them once again, and their sales will be getting better as I know Sony still have big potential, unlike HTC, LG, etc.
-----------
I thought the launch of XZ2 Premium will be at August from the start, not postponed. Maybe they're selling XZ2P on August to compete with H2 flagships like V40, Pixel, Note9, iPhones, etc.

Alvin,
AFIAR, XZ1 won iF Gold Design award last time, all against the odd of having bezelless phones around them
Unfortunately, overall market not seem to feasible with it instead of non-sense flashly thing
Sony try their hardest with very limited resources and fund allocation available from the big pool
Above average 4G modem, 4K HDR Display, 4K Movies Recording, 960fps, 3D Creator, Haptic Feedback Motor
I don't know what to call if that not represent symbol of trying hard
it's just not hit the right-spot where generally market favor in me-too madness.
Me-too madness is not the way to survive...

All valid points in response to my rant. On the topic of cars, you need to look at the market and where Sony want to go in the future. Lets look at Toyota, the said they wanted to introduce hybrid cars and they did with the Prius which is ugly as hell but the success of this was incredible. Now everyone has adopted this but Toyota didn't just stick with the Prius, the prettier and more desirable cars are now hybrids like the very popular Yaris. The Prius is still killing it but now Toyota are comfortable in that sense. The other extreme is the Toyota/Lexus LFA. Lexus wanted to showcase their ability and made this legendary machine, it goes down in history as one of the greatest of its time but Lexus made a loss on each one that they sold. It was technology over design like the Prius but market-wise, the total opposite. It raised their profile, and even though its not as fast as the Lambos and Ferraris, its a very special machine with a one of a kind feel.
The question is where is Sony? Is the XZ2P the LFA? If so where is the Prius and Yaris to keep them ticking over? I'm no business man but Xperia could disappear because everyone else is moving forward at a very fast pace and Sony is limping behind. I'm a big car fanatic and when you look at the way good companies move ahead I feel Sony should be really try to catch up. I appreciate the R&D budget but if anyone gets the chance, take a close look at the back lights of a BMW 5 series or any Audi. Look and appreciate the effort and detail, see all the curves and reflections inside and out, even the writing in the BMW lights looks amazing.
The best way to sum up is that I currently have a BMW 3 series E90 model, I wanted to upgrade this summer to the latest F30 model but yesterday I saw the new Audi A1 which has made me stop. The A1 is the lowest end model but the interior is amazing and that has the full digital dials. For that reason alone, I'm going to wait for the new 3 series to come out because I'm confident that it will have a interior up to that standard. I also saw the new 8 series and it gives me hope that the new 3 series will look amazing.
I don't get that with Sony anymore, my XZ1 Compact looks ancient and I have little hope that the XZ3 Compact will be exciting. Considering that I've only used Sony for well over 10 years despite being given Galaxy phones and iPhones only to return them shows how much of a fan I am but also my patience with them. The XZ2 body should be no bigger than the S9, if that means a smaller screen then so be it. Premium should be no bigger than the S9+ and Compact cannot be twice as thick as the iPhone 8. Fingerprint reader and camera lens should be far apart and higher, they made last year's mistake that Samsung did with the S8, its not good enough to be so brainless. You cannot remove the 3.5mm jack and provide a shitty adaptor, provide a wireless headset or USB-C headphones to convince me that it was the right decision. They took the jack out and give you 3.5mm headphones in the box, how does that make sense? Let's not even mention the XZ2P release debacle considering the guy accidentally announced it at MWC in February. Bloody Sony, make me want you! |

So when Sony agreed to let LDAC be part of the Android Oreo source code in return Google will give Sony advanced access to the next 3 major Android releases starting with Oreo back in 2017.
I'm so happy 'cause today I've found my friends ... They're in my head

Look at the rear panel, XZ2 should be this. ( ignore dual cam)
What happen to this design? Wasnt one device going to be kinda like this concept?
