what happened to the idea of using a phone as a phone?

That is a valid point.

When it comes to selecting a phone I think the overall impression is what matters, not a single
thing such as MMC or FM radio. Because if that was the case T610 would not be the best (or at least one of the best) selling camera phone in 2003 although it had bad camera, bad RF (according to some), to little memory and very slow menu system (according to some).
I could actually imagine people choose K700 over 6230 although it has no MMC because its more fun
to use. With a fun phone people seem to be prepared to stand with all short comings a phone may have. Just look at the K700 UI and compare it with the color less UI Nokia uses.

did this very well in the T610. really great colorful UI compare to nokia's series 40 and series 60 phones. even with the so many colors on their screens, their UI seems monochromatic for some reason. I reallt enjoy browsing the menus of the T610 and any improvement over it would make upcoming phones great sellers. |

I didnt say mp3's on mobilephones are idiotic - or what I ment was - that buying a mobilephone because you want to use it mainly as an mp3 player instead of a descent mp3player is idiotic. Im not talking about playing a few songs now and then - this you can also do on a K700 with the memory onboard. All of the debates Ive had with people about the Nokia 6230 and the memoryslot has been about them getting the Nokia as a replacement for an mp3 player. This is the ONLY thing most people want the memoryslot for. And the ONLY thing most people seem to find extremly important - that it can be used as mp3 player. Most of them plan hughe memorycards and hours and hours of mp3playing - and this is plain foolish. Its a phone primarily - this is the reason one should buy it. Otherwise one should get an Ipod.
Most of them look astonished when I tell them that they should not expect 6 hours of constant mp3playing - and still be able to use the phone a couple of days without recharging. But I will not get into this argument once more - if you beleive a mobilephone to be a good replacement for a dedicated mp3 player - so be it
I'll just get me a phone - that can play a few mp3 and use mp3 as nice ringtones - everyone else may get their "marvelous mp3 player" - I dont give a s**t
I wouldent mind a memoryslot on the K700 - but I dont consider the Nokia 6230 to have a HUGHE advantage because it does have one - because theres nothing really interesting to use the memoryslot for on a Nokia 6230. No reason to store videoclips, who wants to watch video on such a crappy screen, no reason to store applications, its not a smartphone, no reason for hundreds of mbs extra space for pictures, its only a vga cam - and again the screen doesnt invite viewing pictures, no reason to store themes cause it doesnt support it, no reason to store 500 mp3's because battery sets a natural restrain on playback time.
The memory of the K700 is plenty for the things supported by the handset

I actually think the k700 and the n6230 are close enough in capabilities that things will be very interesting.
What will influence matters for me, are:
1 - Price
2 - Feature implementation, how usable are these phones
3 - Stability, do these phones crash
Features 1 and 3 will change over time, so I 'm not reading too much into peoples very early experiences. It is rare for a phone manufacturer to get things right first time these days, I suspect both Nokia and will have multiple firmware revisions
End of the day, it is an example of why competition is good for us. |

The unfortunate thing is that the 6230 will sell more units than the k700 despite being inferior.

What service provider do you think in the uk will be the first to sell the k700, do you think tmobile as they were the first with the t610 (i think)?
