Sigh ...

Can't understand why people think this is an optical zoom versus digital zoom debate. It's not. Sorry about my poor English, but I'll try again.

We're on the stage BEFORE picture taking. This is the stage when, like in any $100 camera which has a feature called "autofocus". The user has to half-depress the shot button, which activates the "autofocus" to lock on and produce a crisp image. This is irregardeless of whether the framing of the shot in zoomed or not. Once the picture is to your liking, AFTER that you fully depress the shot button to complete taking the picture.

We are talking about the half-depress stage, where the P990i is NOT able to "autofocus" and produce an acceptable display pic when any type of zoom is applied BEFORE the picture is taken.

I hope this is clear enough for all. When the autofocus doesn't work, forget about even bothering with the second stage of completely pushing down the shot button to take the picture.

In any case, even after going ahead to take the picture, it is completely unusable. You might need the CIA or FBI noise imaging technology to ensure the pictures turns from superblur to acceptable sharp.

If there's a bunch of you out there who are not having any problems, then consider yourself lucky.

Works fine on mine...even with macro turned off i get clear and very sharp pics from my p990i.
Looks like you might have a faulty phone...unlucky fella, get it replaced.

Tried to. But both the phone at my service provider, and at the local SE Service centre, exhibited the same problem which left them a little puzzled too. The only thing in common was that we were all having the newer R5A006 firmware. The SE Service centre upgraded theirs to R7A, but called me up to tell me that the autofocus issue was still there.

Puzzling ...

Thanks for posting the pictures. So the SEUS updates itself automatically...but looks like we will have to wait for another ROM upgrade. I e-mailed Agile Mobile regarding the Messenger conking out after trying to access the menus. Maybe they will release a new version.

I wish they had a Send/Receive button in messaging (akin to the Scan/search) button found in the Wifi menu. There is a line of empty space that could be used for buttons instead of having to tap the menu at the top.

I don't have the fone in front of me, so sorry if the exact wording is a bit off...but you get the idea! Seems they can keep on tweaking the software and menus

Got mine on Voda but told it's a Vanila handset (ish got voda startup and settings in but can edit them)

Phone: R5A006
BT: R4F01
Org: R3A04
CDA:R2A04 (this is repeated twice for some reason?)

SEUS says it's up to date.

Ahhhh....

Check out the August 2006 review of the P990i on GSM Arena (http://www.gsmarena.com/sony_ericsson_p990-review-101p7.php).

"Unfortunately, it seems that the testing unit we've got had some issues since the autofocus just didn't seem to work well over distances longer than several meters. Otherwise the macro shots produce nice and crisp images with great focus."

So is there a batch of 'test units' with defects that have been re-circulated into the market?

Care to respond SE?

Okay, here's another fun bug with the latest R3B01 Organizer firmware:

Run the Vijay Singh golf game and then let the screen saver kick in and eventually the screen will go blank by just leaving the phone alone. Now touch a key or hit the jog dial to get the screen back. From now on, the game is jerky and has inexplicable artifacts on the screen. What's worse, I have to reboot twice in order for the game to work properly once again. Simply quitting the game isn't enough. Gah!

This actually happened with the previous firmware too.

So you'll also know that digital zooms are a complete waste of time in the first place then.

I wouldn't say it's a waste of time in a 2 Mpixel mobile camera. Let's say you are somewhere and want to send someone an MMS, but you are a little bit too far from the object you want to show. Then it would definitely be a waste of time shooting the image without zoom, going home and resize it in an image editor before sending it.
But I agree that as long time isn't of importance it would be better using Photoshop to get the amount of zoom you like. The resizing algorithms are most likely a lot better.

After upgrading to R7A001 , I see that some bugs have already been fixed.

A couple of bugs still remain and I think these weren't mentioned here before except for one.

1) Bluetooth headset HBH-PV700 keeps on disconnecting after some time.
If disconnected and if my phone rings, sometimes it automatically connects to my phone, sometimes it just won't

2) When you call someone, and if his/her phone is busy, P990i will prompt "User busy re-try ?". Once I press yes, P990 will keep calling him/her until his line is no longer busy. Once the line is no longer BUSY, the P990 should make a warning sound so that I know other party is not busy anymore and I should be speaking with him..... Now it just connects to the other person without any sound warnings . P800/900/910 all made the warning sounds!!!

3) Above Re-trying function does not work very efficiently, sometimes it just gets stuck and never tries to call again.

3) On FC and FO mode while speaking on the phone, there is no way you can turn into ACTIVITY MENU in the Task manager. It's never Highligted !!

4) There is no way, you can turn on the phone speaker before you start talking to other party.

5) Strange enough, In FC or FO mode, once you click Task Manager sign, the ACTIVITY menu does not work. This only happens if the task manager program is already not running in the backround. If the Task maneger is already opened and running on the back round, the Activity Menu works fine. Once the Tas Manager program is ended, the useage of Activity Menu is useless. It's hard to explain try it yourself.

6) If you saved a contact's phone number as a FAX NUMBER, the phone will not let you call that number at all. Some people use their faxes as their phones as well.

With so many complaints a believe the P990 photo firmware really needs some tunning.

My Nikon camera can not auto-focus on poor light condtions, because it relies on the crispness of the image to detect the correct focus (it has no auxiliary focus light).
This means if there are no sharp edges around the area being scanned, the auto-focus doesn't work !!

This does not excuse SonyEricsson form making a bad job !

I remember reading somewhere that Eldar (?) in his P990 review that he didn't review the camera software because it was going to be tweaked...

Going to do that this weekend. The service provider has been very good in trying to get this issue resolved, and will let me try another new unit at the store. Will be a case of Russian Roulette here - hoping that I get a good batch ...

The problem is I love the phone (minus this autofocus thing). DAMN!!!!!

I have not personally bought the P990 from them (although I did buy the m600i) and you should have no problems with them and the update service...
