Listen up people, I have the final retail boxed unit, stop talking about prototypes. I won the phone in a charity auction that Sony Ericsson put up in Sweden, all the money went to Unicef.
And no, its not a byte more than 256MB ram in it.
The reason for that, I have no clue, a bit surprised as well. |

I'll say answer B. WM has been running fine on less than 384MB for years hasn't it?
The only additional demands the panels bring is that they have to send the X panel screen updates of their GUI. Multitasking wasn't invented for the sake of X-panels. So I don't see how 384MB is required to run the X-panels (other than for additional efficiency). The 128MB X1's were running the interface quickly also.

What better way to get rid of prototypes than to give them away to charity

Yeah well of course that is a possiblity, but then again it would be pretty daring to put up an auction with a prototype unit and not mentioning it.
I will give my contact at Sony Ericsson a call this afternoon to see if I can find out more regarding this matter. |

All prototype phones from SE has a IMEI starting with 0044..check your phones IMEI number and see (*#06#) 
Mine starts with 0044

Ok, now SE updated their UK product site claiming HSPA 850/1900/2100 MHz.
I'm confused...

Yes true, WM6 runs quite dandy on 256MB ram (not so much 128MB ram). I have dynamo 3 (like X panels) running on my Touch Pro and it seems to run fine. I'm pretty sure SE's panels won;t stress resources too much and to be honest I suspect 256mb would even be overkill for the average user.
However, 384MB ram is nice for people that seriously stress their phones, installing lots of 3rd party apps and running memory intensive programs and multitasking with say many internet browser pages open. Though even then I do stress my Touch Pro alot and han't gone down to last 20MB's yet!
My main reason for wanting 384MB was for future upgradeability prospects. In that, WM7 no doubt will be more bloated than WM6 and I'm sure providing gfx requirements don't change, WM7 could be ported to the Xperia where all that nice big memory would be welcomed!!
Either way, I'm pretty sure Xperia does indeed come with 256MB RAM now, its release has been rushed and I'm sure they wouldn;t have had enough time to start implanting extra 128MB modules on the chipset. |

Also a subject of the matter is that I in my box recieved a support card for instant replacement in case of a breakdown of the hardware, something shipping with all retail boxes of the X1. Would seem very strange to include that with a protoype, just a thought.
Rang up my contact at SE a few minutes ago and he was in a meeting and would get back to me this afternoon. |

killmaster are you sure they are retail units as to get only 2 units for sale is a little odd?! seems the confusion isn;t going to end till retail date!
Just a Guess but I think you might find killmaster meant "they were delivered to his shop" Rather than 2 were delivered

I was just thinking...
Everyone points to the article on The Unwired as some kind "official confirmation" of the 256MB vs 384MB discussion, is there a possibility that this article is actually incorrect?
Some people seem to argue that there is total 384MB of RAM but that the graphic takes up 128MB and that leaves 256MB of available system RAM? |

That's right, in WM5 and later ROM only is used for storage, RAM is reserved for program use. But in earlier version of Windows (PPC), RAM was used for main storage as well (and all programs and data would be lost if you let the battery die, resulting in an automatic factory reset from ROM).
Since WM5 and later don't use RAM as storage, it seems even less likely that an OEM will give the device more RAM than would be used even by 20 or 30 or more programs running at once. At 30 programs in RAM, that's 8MB each - a lot of RAM even for a program heavy on RAM use.
Of course in the future 256MB will be small, but for now it's pretty healthy amount of RAM.
I just opened 23 applications on my i780, and there is still 73MB available. Not only that, but the UI has not slowed down one bit. It's still responding promptly to new commands. And that's only 128mb ram.
Whether X1 has 256 or 384MB RAM is not going to make a lot of practical difference for 99.9999% of buyers. For that 0.0001% who do need more, well fair enough - wait until something with more RAM becomes available. TBH people with that need are more likely to be looking at a purpose built device than a consumer device.

last time I checked the Xperia was running WM6 not PPC2k, CE 2 or any other iteration of Windows CE/Mobile. No need to remind me of those dark and gloomy days as I fell victim to those hard resets as a result of insufficient battery power not to mention sliding a bar to determine how much of 16mb you wanted to devote to storage/ram!!
With the Xperia RAM and storage are independent of each other and you can't store stuff in ram. Though I will agree to be honest 384mb isn't a necessity as I said earlier even with 256mb ram and someone that has always stressed pda's I am yet to run out of memory on my touch pro. 384MB would just have been nice for WM7 purposes but even then, by the looks of things WM7 won't be coming to Q3 09 and by then I most definitely will be looking to buy a new device! Heck, I'm not even sure if my touch pro will see it out till xmas!!

hi all.
i had a question regarding X1
in the whitepaper it says that the handset is capable of recording video in VGA@30fps with H263 and VGA215fps with H264......
is there an option in the camera menu to change codecs?????????..... finally does it record video in VGA ----> 30fps<----- or not??

H.264 is the only format recorded at 15fps VGA. H.264 encoded files can be played back at 30fps VGA. Everything else is play/record 30fps VGA. Of course this pertains to the X1i only. |
